{Our Visit to September 11 Memorial in New York City}

Of course, when we got on our New York See It All Tour,  with OnBoard Tours, we also did visit the September 11 Memorial.
This is at the South Pool, where one of the Twin Towers used to be.
Not exactly the same size, as it is about 31% smaller than the towers' actual footprints.
Just click the above link...
But still, it is an impressive sight with their 176 square foot presence! Or 16.35 square meters.
Here you see the 4 World Trade Center, right behind the South Pool.
Husband Pieter stands at the North Pool...
It is so impressive and so overwhelming when one thinks about all those souls that lost their life on 9/11 and before... and so many rescue workers, who lost their lives.
It makes it into a kind of a sacred ground!
9/11 by the Numbers... you can click this link for the statistics.
All those names are inscribed in bronze on parapets surrounding the twin Memorial pools.
Learn How the Names are Arranged just click the link.
Two enormous waterfalls and reflecting pools with more than 400 trees surrounding them.
Here Pieter stands near the Callery Pear Tree, that is called The Survivor Tree as a  living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.
It got severely damaged and burned but after its recovery and rehabilitation, it got planted back in 2010. Click the above link for the full story.
One can only admire the strength of any living creation on this planet!
We both loved to wear our caps on this very sunny short vacation in NYC.
With its branches stretched out and wounds healed, it seems to look quite happy here!

We did not have time for visiting the Memorial Museum as the bus went on after this stop.
But we both appreciate very much for having been here in person!
May God bless the many souls that lost their lives and also protect us from anything like this.

  4. Hello Mariette, I am sure that it was an honor for you and Pieter to gaze into the memorial and reflect that despite various real problems, America still has an amazing degree of individual freedom and opportunity.

  8. Indrukwekkend monument, zo mooi gemaakt. Bomen zijn vaker de enige overlevers, bij de vliegtuigramp in de Bijlmermeer in 1992 is ook een boom blijven staan en nu een monument geworden "de boom die alles zag" wordt hij genoemd.

  9. It must have been quite emotional to visit such a memorial to all those who lost their lives in this tragic attack.
I like the fact that pear tree survived and has been replanted by the memorial.

  10. Thank you for sharing this memorial. The only way I will ever see. Such a terrible waste of lives.

  11. Dear Mariette,
Son Carl and I spent four days in NYC last month ~ being the retired travel professional, I orchestrated a great time for us. A Broadway show ("Beautiful"), a Yankees/Red Sox baseball game, Top of the Rock, Today Show, Shopping at Macy's Herald Square, four hour long Sopranos Tour, people-watching, walking, navigating the subway system ~~ and the highlight of our trip, the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Carl gets quite emotional when faced with anything pertaining to that day, we had to sidestep the room with all of the photos of the deceased, he just could not do it. But, all in all it was a rewarding day because it reinforced for both of us the sacrifices so many made, the horror, the pain, the aftermath.

    Take good care,
    Helen

I can imagine what a poignant moment that was.
We had programs about the tragic day of 9/11 on several channels last night - we watched the one on History.
Seeing it again was sheer terror and unbelievable that such a thing could happen in our world.

    You both look so good!
    love

  17. Liebe Mariette,

  20. Dearest Mariette, here I am back again trying to catch up with my blogger friends!
Yesterday was a very sad day and I guess it will always be for many years to come.
One year and one day before 9/11, i.e. on 9/10/2000, I was visiting the Twin Towers, with my son and some colleagues, and we were taking lots of photos under the Towers.
We had been so impressed! And we also bought some souvenir T-shirts of the Towers to remind us of our visit. I do not know if I could go and visit the memorial...it would be very hard!
    Many hugs!!!!
