{Hats & Me}

  • As a young girl I always had to stand on my toes, nose against the window, when walking past the Millinery Shop 'Bonneterie Van de Beuken in the Steenstraat of Horst my birth place.
  • My favorite Great Aunt Nelly or 'Oud Tante Nelly', the wife of my Paternal Great-Uncle Handrie, brother of my Grandmother and her sister Mia, did make such lovely hats.
  • I always have admired the special bows, roses, pearls and ribbons they used as embellishment for those elegant hats. Mom used to buy her hats at their shop!
  • The very same Great Aunt Nelly, has instilled in me, my love for fine china and silver ware.
  • Whenever I did sew for her a dress or suit, I did visit with her after High Mass on Sunday for fitting.
  • She always did serve me coffee with pastry in her fine china.
  • One never knows how such early encounters at a young and tender age do impact our lifestyle... For sure, Tante Nelly will be smiling down from heaven...
  • On August 25, 1984 I had found this matching hat, with veil... to go with my Royal Stuart Scottish Tartan plaid.
  • Husband Pieter went to England for the British Mushroom Days, by himself and he found at the Scotch House in London a wool shawl, matching gloves and this fabric in a Scottish Royal Stuart Tartan plaid.
  • So I did sew this pencil skirt out of the fabric. Later I have hemmed up the skirt and I still have it.

The shoes and skirt I still have...
Too bad that the Scotch House has been shut up by the end of 2001.
Just read: The Telegraph - Scotch House to shut up shop.
Pieter used to buy several things there; already for his little daughter Lizzy a Scottish Tartan skirt when she was a toddler.
Are you covering your head with a hat?
If only for the sun in summer; that still counts!

{My Jessica McClintock Hat & Christian Dior Suit}

On Easter Sunday it was such lovely weather when we went to Church, so naturally I wore my new Jessica McClintock hat that I found for a steal at Tuesday Morning in Atlanta. Whenever we make our 3-weekly rounds to Atlanta for stocking up on health food, we always check out Tuesday Morning! With this new hat I did wear my old Christian Dior Suit that I received on my 34th Birthday, while being in San Francisco together. I had found it in the Cosmopolitan magazine and fell in love with it. Having studied fashion, I always have been drawn to the great French designers. At the time Christian passed away, I was only six-and-a-half years old.
Perfect weather and no wind... otherwise you will have to run after your hat. My Mom always wore a hat to Church when I was a little girl; that was so elegant... Fond memories. Our Church ladies asked me just recently WHY I did not wear hats. I smiled and didn't tell them that I had this new one for Easter.
This is the page from the Cosmopolitan magazine that I fell in love with... I was over the moon for finding it at Macy's Union Square in San Francisco. Together with the money that we'd received from sweet Sister-in-law Dora, we went ahead and got it. I was thrilled too that it came in a size 4 or European 34. My size never has been a problem in the USA because of the many Asian women, so there is a market. In The Netherlands I never could find anything...
The only thing I did to this suit, is hemming up the skirt... Please let me know what you think!
This is in our previous home in Dublin, in the veranda. Before we moved to Pennsylvania, Italy, Indonesia and back to Dublin, Georgia again...

  • That's me, 26 years ago... My eyes are not as big anymore!

Don't you think the skirt was too long here? I always LOVED those heavy duty trucks! Would you believe that Pieter came home from a trip with a POSTER of such monster, as a gift for me?!
This Jessica McClintock hat is called: A Rose Is A Rose... And you all know how I LOVE roses!
It is an all natural 100% straw hat... As dear friend Bea from Modern Country Lady wrote in her post: Life is better with a hat. See link below post.
What do you say about the length of my skirt here? I've altered it. The suit is 100% natural rayon and is also lined in 100% rayon which gives a great feel. The wide patent leather belt came with it. My shoes are Escada from the outlet. Scarf is a Christian Dior silk neckerchief that we found in Singapore in the tax free shops at the airport. That is the bonus of a traveling consultant! Guess I never will change in size so I can keep things for eternity, with some alterations and new accessories.
Yes I know that I ought to wear the hat more in my face... but these pictures are taken in a hurry before we drove to Church, using my iPhone... Pieter did wear his matching silk houndstooth tie but you have to be awfully fast for taking pictures of him. He gets out of his clothes for a change, in a blink!
Both in a large houndstooth pattern; the Christian Dior Suit and the silk neckerchief.
Here you see the rose on my straw hat as Pieter did not take the photos from that side...
Made in the U.S.A. and Size 4

Jessica McClintock - 100% Natural Straw
A steal of a deal and that's how we do stretch our dollar...
Do you wear hats and/or suits?
Are natural fibers important to you?

{My Grandma's Rose in December}

It is already rare for having perfect roses in December, but this one is even more of a miracle rose. Having these special roses, grown from clippings that my Dad took from Grandma's garden after pruning her roses for the last time before she died, is like a miracle. Once more I asked my Dad to give me some clippings, so I could grow them in our garden as well. You can read about this incredible story in the post below: {3 Most Prized Roses; from my Paternal Grandmother}. Let me show how we harvested a last one on December 8...
This is the Queen Elizabeth Rose, a Floribunda.
We called it 'Oma Rose' for many years until Bea from Modern Country Lady found the true name. Read below the post: {Mistery Oma Rose Resolved!}.
This lovely pink rose business card case is hand painted by Ms. Rebecca from A Gathering Place.
Link is below my post.
Hand crocheted table runner is done by a 78 year old Dutch lady and gifted to me by dear friend Ellie, from my hometown Horst in The Netherlands
Ellie and her husband arrived here in the USA, on the day my husband had his heart attack.
Previous blog post: {ROSE STEPPING STONES} was about that dreadful day... see below.
Hope you enjoyed my December 8, rose as well as Rebecca's painted rose and Mia's hand crocheted roses.
As for me; I do love them ALL...
Do you have any rose or plant in memory of a loved one?

{My OPA - GRANDDADDY}

Today it is 120 years ago that my OPA, paternal GRANDDADDY was born. He also was my GODFATHER. When I picked up my childhood poetry album and read his words, it made me think of him on this special day. He passed away because of a fatal stroke when I was only 14 and he 73... He was a hard working man, a plasterer (stucadoor in Dutch) and doing also ornamental and decorative interior plasterwork around ceilings and lamps. Nowadays we buy it ready made out of resin... His two brothers were also plasterers and his Dad did whitewash or lime wash walls for a living. Tough job and it sure didn't make them wealthy. My great-grandfather only lived to be 52 years old. But they were honest and very much Church going people that raised their large families by maintaining high morals and ethics. They were happy and content, something that is often lacking nowadays especially amongst the younger generations. The youth often throws away the religious part that their ancestors lived by for centuries. It was a culture, handed down from father to son, mother to daughter. Now people think they can 'have it all' with minimal efforts and all on their own. Often life does not unfold like that as somewhere down the road, there will be a bump and what than? Facing it all alone, without any spiritual support and believe, will be hard. Okay, let's see what message Opa wrote for me way back...
Just a short note
Not much in writing
But it's my wish,
That it may be long lived
And that it always
Reminds you
Of who wrote this:
He means so well!
Opa
Opa as a young man, wearing his military suit. Still having his own dreams...
He lived a harsh life through WWI; the Depression years; WWII and yet he managed to raise his large family of 12 children.
This is on their 25th Wedding Anniversary; 13 September 1943 during WWII...
My Dad is the one in the center, top.
This was on their 40th Wedding Anniversary, 13 September 1958...
Dad is again in the center, top row.
Sadly, Opa did not live till the 50th Wedding Anniversary as on February 15 of 1965, he passed away. On the birthday of his daughter, Aunt Nelly who's seated to the right.
Several of my uncles and one aunt, have followed their parents to heaven. My Grandmother passed away on November 26, 1984 at the age of 91. She was a long time friend of my husband Pieter's Mom!
Some treasures I keep from my Opa...
In the little jar is a blue stone that was once set into a little ring that I received from Opa when I was 5.
I walked home from Kindergarden and Opa met me on the road as he walked with his cane daily for exercise. He gave me this little ring and I was over the moon. Of course we had no jewelry than, nothing on my fingers, wrists or in my ears. To me it was a precious piece of jewelry and when it came apart, I still kept this little blue stone...
To the left is my very first Mass book that I received from Opa for my 1st Communion.
Going to a Catholic school, we went to Mass daily and that was marked even above our grades on our quarterly 'rapport'.
The silver charm bracelet (without any charms) was given to me when I did my Confirmation in sixth grade.
That I've kept also forever, as it is so dear to me. Sentimental value from a person that loved me and whom I loved and very much admired.
Opa went to Mass every day and he prayed for his entire family. He loved them and did visit regularly in order to keep up with everyone.
Sadly Opa never got to meet his three Australian grandchildren. When they'd boarded the ship in Adelaide, Opa had already died... sad for making the long journey over seas to show the children to their grandparents and only one of them lived to actually see them.
My little treasures... The blue stone from the ring that I got from Opa when I was only 5.
The cross is from my Great Uncle who was advisor to several bishops and living in Indonesia. Will introduce him later...
On this little 'Pochette' (pocket square), in crocheted rose filet lace, are some sentimental treasures.
Also the medallion with the Holy Mary is there, that got pinned onto my camisol as a child. Even babies had it on, for protection by the Heavenly Mother.
The blue stone has a little crack but that's fine...
By the way, the number 13 I bought in Germany and over there it is a lucky charm; Glückszahl.
Closeup...
Okay, the treasures are back in the authentic antique letterpress drawer. Pieter did put an acrylic sheet in front to keep (most) of the dust out. The little jar with the blue stone resides to the left, near the top under the small brown glass jar.
Did you notice my Oma roses? Yes, they are blooming now, after the heat of summer.
Remember on August 13, the Oma mystery rose got resolved by Bea from Modern Country Lady and we now know it is the Floribunda rose: Queen Elisabeth.
Paired with some ever-blooming Rosemary they look gorgeous in a small Baccarat crystal vase!
It was perfect for this post for having Oma's roses as well. They belong together...
The blue Le Jacquard Français tea towel has served me well this week!
Guess that Opa and Oma are smiling down from heaven...

{Green Pecans for Georgian Nocino Liqueur}

One week ago, on Thursday August 18, dear friend Bea wrote a post on her Modern Country Lady blog about Green Walnut Liqueur (see: Green walnut liqueur). Living in the Southeast of the USA, naturally we have NO  walnuts but we got PECANS and even in our own garden! So I did try my luck and made us some Green Pecan Liqueur - the Georgian version for the Italian Nocino Liqueur. So in a couple of months we will try it, drizzled over some ice cream for dessert and let you know! Recipe below this photo...
Ingredients:
25 - 30 green pecans (or walnuts for the northern regions)
¾ liter Brandy
600 g sugar
1 cinnamon stick
6 cloves
1 vanilla bean
zest of 1 lemon
Wash your green pecans (walnuts) and wear gloves and make sure that you don't stain your cutting surface with the nuts.
Use a glass bowl (because the nuts will stain other surfaces) to pour the brandy with the sugar.
Add the zest of one lemon, the cloves and split the vanilla been lengthwise with a paring knife. You can scrape the seeds down from both sides and cut the pod in half and add as well.
Stir well till the sugar more or less has dissolved.
Now put the green pecan parts into a clean glass bottle you prepared for this recipe.
Pour the brandy and spice mixture over the nuts and shake well to blend.
Leave for at least one month and shake in-between, making sure that all sugar has dissolved.
Then you strain the mixture into bottles and leave it for six more weeks.
Ready in time for the holidays!
In Italy Nocino is used as a digestive. You can also drizzle it over ice cream or use it in custards with cake.

{TIPS on Linking Back to Other Bloggers}

As I've done lots of blog reading and visiting, I also did notice certain things that are done different and how that will impact your number of visitors and comments left on each blog post. All of us strife for some frequent readers and look forward to comments. Those comments do give us an indication as to what readers like and they often can teach us a lot about their views and experiences.
BUT, first we must make it easy and swift for visitors to do so. Therefore, let's go over some points here and I will use snapshots from my own settings as an example. Visual things help more than just 'words', that's what Pieter and I have learned all through our career when conducting seminars for others. Captivate the attention and than show something new and different. That keeps everyone happy and the exchange of knowledge can begin. In Canada, one of our favorite work areas, they called the seminars that we gave: 'Technology Transfer Seminars'. I liked that. So by giving away something, we also gain a lot ourselves. Never be shy to ask and to share! We ALL learn till our last breath and I hope, you enjoy learning as much as I do. Okay, now back to Comment Settings and I will explain this as we go.
By setting Who Can Comment to Anyone is VERY important. That's the ONLY way you will be able to build those Back Links. You should think about back links as exchanging business cards. You leave one at the place where you just visited.
Oh, and Comment Form Placement should be Pop-up window! Why? Because if otherwise, it will take a lot of time till ALL the gadgets on the sidebar, including music etc. etc. RELOAD again. With all respect, I DO love your blogs but I even more so would love to find time for visiting more other blogs. That applies to each one of us; time is the limit!
So with these two settings you already can solve 2 problems.
Well, due to the spam creeping in I had to change long ago from 'Anyone' and I choose Registered User. Also for avoiding the spam I changed to Comment Moderation!
It also helps if you put your name in the Comment Form Message, as a courtesy to others so they can address you. You can put in any personal message for your readers. Remember: This IS your business card, your immediate contact with your readers.
Here we got some Very Important settings!
Comment moderation. It is best if you put there: Only on posts older than 14 days. WHY?
You know that those spammers are often a kind of 'robots' and they search for older posts, so this way you can weed them out!
Show word verification for comments? NO! Since this is for warding off those spam robots, you ALREADY took care of that by marking posts older than 14 days... Word verification is only to check if it is a HUMAN and not a robot!
It is THE MOST TIME CONSUMING THING we run into while visiting bloggers and leaving comments. Remember, we ALSO want to visit other bloggers! So it is best to mark this with NO. You will see that your comment number will actually go up drastically after changing this. Often comments get lost anyway if word verification is required. That happened to me quite some times and often we just abandon such a post and move on... Sweet Bea from Modern Country Lady gave me this valuable tip a while back, so I'm more than glad to pass it on to others.
This is it! Leaving your comment with your Name/URL. That is like dropping off your business card with a direct Link Back to YOUR Blog!
If you continue to leave your comments, using your Google Account, that will ONLY lead to your PROFILE - NOT to your BLOG.
You want to land a new visitor onto your blog and not the profile! That also will save another click too, that means time... for visiting more other blogs.
This is how it looks when building that Back Link.
That URL will land your readers right ONTO your blog.
This is just an example of how it looks like on Johanna's blog: Silber+Rosen. No picture of me, but a direct link back to my blog. If you only leave a picture, that is the same as returning home from a business meeting with your own business card still in your hand... Click on Johanna's blog above and see for yourself. You can come right back here again, by clicking on Mariette's Back to Basics, as that is my Link Back.
That Link is also handy for giving a reply to someone's comment. It doesn't do anything for you to post a reply comment on your own blog. That's like stuffing your mailbox with your own business cards. That leads to no LINK... It is also rather tedious for having to go back to all blogs where you left a previous comment... So that will in most cases not happen.
Enough for today. Hope you can put some of this to use, provided that you all are willing to give up your picture on the comment page. I'd rather have my readers look at my picture ON my blog-post!
Wish you all a lovely week and lots of readers!
