{Our Papyrus Plant}

On May 3rd Pieter did plant his Papyrus plant alongside our pond. It was a gift from dear friends. This is THE Papyrus plant that also grew alongside the river Nile in Egypt, in the third millennium BC. But with the drought we were facing this summer and extremely hot weather, the plant does not look as happy as in May... Have a look.
This is on May 3, just planted and happy!
Here you see the Papyrus plant on October 12. Our pond held water all summer, due to an underground spring, but it has been in that scorching heat for a couple of months.
Let's hope it will look healthy again, come spring...

    I'm soooo with you! My plants and shrubs look terrible and so I'm just hoping spring brings fresh, new growth!

    Papyrus finde ich auch so schön! Aber ich denke, er erholt sich wieder. Diese Gräser sind doch an sich ganz robust. Wir hatten mal einen Bambus. Als das große Bambussterben in Deutschland umging, mußte auch er sein Leben lassen. Das hing mit der Blüte zusammen, denn wenn er blüht, stirbt die Pflanze wohl ab - so habe ich das jedenfalls in Erinnerung.
    In unseren botanischen Gärten sind damals einige sehr prachtvolle große Bambusse abgestorben. Zu schade!

    Die Arme... Die Pflanze gefällt mir, ob sie bei uns in DE gedeihen würde?

    Würde sich in unserem Schrebergarten schön machen ...

    Wat leuk zo´n aparte plant in je tuin, en ook mooi zo´n "vijver"(nouja) in je tuin te hebben, prachtig!

    Lieve Mariette,

    Ik hoop van harte dat jullie Papyrus plant de winter goed doorkomt en volgend jaar weer even mooi is als in mei. Ik kan mij nog herinneren dat ik in de jaren zeventig zo'n plant op mijn vensterbank had staan. Het was toen helemaal hip!!

    I just read up on caring for the papyrus. Turns out they don't like extreme cold and need very wet soil to thrive. I certainly wouldn't have imagined that -- as a grass plant, I guess I just assumed it could survive almost anything. Hope yours will do fine. Best wishes, Tammy

    du weißt ja sicher, dass man aus einem dieser Quirle ganz leicht vom Papyrus einen Ableger ziehen kann. Einfach ins Wasser stellen und er bekommt Wurzeln. Ich würde sicherheitshalber im Haus einen Ableger halten. Denn dass diese bildschöne Pflanze den amerikanischen Winter überlebt, halte ich für unwahrscheinlich. Sie sieht trotz der trockenen Triebe aber immer noch sehr imposant aus.

    WOW what a beautiful gift you received!!! I had to take a couple of extra looks that rose looks so real! Amazingly beautiful! I will send a little prayer to the Garden Angels for your papyrus plant. the little angels on the velvet rope are so darling... perfect size for adding their presence throughout the home!!

    Dearest Mariette, I love this kind of plants and I so hope for you, that the plant will come back after winter! I had a Papyrusplant insinde for ages, but I never have grown one in the garden. I have other similar plants, what I just cut down to the ground in springtime and then they come back with lots of new sprouts :O) Just give it a try, it is worth it.
