{We saw Our Lovely 2014 Magnolias for 1 Day...}

Each year our magnolias, Magnolia x soulangeana bloom around my Mom's Birthday of February 12...
Gorgeous blooms we got to see on February 26, in the morning as we had come home by 22:15 the day before.
Our cat-sitter did send us the above photo, while we were still in The Netherlands.
So lovely, we had been waiting now for several years as we all lost them to frost the previous years.
Next to the new retainer wall for blocking the rain water.
Even on a dreary, rainy day they look gorgeous!
What a sight after all those years!

With our new roof and the exterior painted it looks very nice.
The tiles need still to be put onto the concrete around the house.
BUT... the next night it turned into 23°F RealFeel by 6:44 AM!

So dreary the next day after FROST!
All brown again...
Blue sky but all those buds are brown...



Maybe spring 2015 will finally yield us fully opened, gorgeous Japanese magnolias...?

      Oh it sure was a beautiful sight for but one day... so sad that the next day they all had turned brown. Hope you get to enjoy yours and they probably are holding off better with all the snow you still got. We saw it from the air; all white landscapes...

      Funny how we all look so much forward to the first blossoms of spring. And yet, like my Mom, at the old age of 90, you ONLY get to see such blossoms less than a hundred times... Not much if you think about it but the memory fills us up with such joy throughout the year that we live from one to the next. it is for this reason that people paint them or découpage them for holding on to it longer... Life is such a fragile MOMENT of beauty!

      Yes they were such beauties, they tried to look their best and did get killed by frost...

    What a shame, dearest Mariette!
    But, they have been wonderful. Frosdt is not good for most of the flowers!

      It was so sad because we just had come home the previous day around 22:15 and were so eager to see those gorgeous blooms. Than you read the weather forecast and you know you have to take photos in a hurry or it will be too late...

      The entire USA has lived under such a Polar Vortex this winter that the strong winds from the north do push this cold front all the way to the south... It's not supposed to be like that but what can we do? The Netherlands and most of Europe had NO winter, nature looked already so advanced. Two complete extremes.

    OMG, how pity your GORGEOUS Japanese (it is, right?) Magnolia heralding and celebrating your mother's birth day turned brown like that! I love pink compared to the white one. I DO wish we will able to see the full-bloomed sweet pink magnolia next year♡♡♡

      Indeed this is the gorgeous Japanese Magnolia. I did not mention its full botanical name, I guess I was too sad about it...
      What can we do than wait and hope for next year to see its lovely display?

      Ja aber so etwas ist peinlich. Auch für den Baum der ja die Knospen produziert hat und dann mit -5°C auf einmal alles verliert. Soviel Energie um sonst...

    Gorgeous photos of your beautiful home through the magnolia trees!!! These blooms are the nicest that exist but they don't grow by us.It's a pitty that frost has caused such damage this year.

      We too loved the sight of magnolia blossoms with the home in the background... The tiles are not yet put on that concrete but it looks lovely already. We can only hope the best for 2015!

      Ja bij jullie in Nederland ongekend warm en zacht zonder een echte winter en hier zo'n aanvallen vanuit de Noordpool waarmee de koude luchtstroom zijn schade aanricht. In het noorden zitten ze nog steeds onder de sneeuw. Het leek mooi voor hun maar midden in de week komt de kou weer terug...

    Your magnolia blooms were very pretty! They looked so lovely in fron of your house. It is so sad the frost turned them all into brown :-( Weather has been really weird this year. But glad you could enjoy them for a day and we got to see them as well :-)

      Our Japanese Magnolia will try again next year to look its best. The huge neighbor, that 65+ year old Pine tree is gone since December but it will feel quite happy without its competition. We wish it the very best so we once again can enjoy its beauty!

      Indeed our Japanese Magnolias were blooming quite late this year. Usually they're open on my Mom's Birthday on the 12th of February. Too bad we had such frost late...
      We're still waiting for the tile man to place the tiles around the house, on the concrete. But before summer, that too will be taken care of.

      You know what? A year will pass rather quickly and we do hope that indeed 2015 will be a showcase of saucer sized blooms of this Japanese Magnolia.

    Beautiful magnolias and such a shame that the frost came and turned them all brown. You must have been so happy to have them flowering and you will have the photos to look at and enjoy.
    Also how terrible the tornado must have been in your previous post and so happy for you that your house and garden remained safe.

      We still feel oh so blessed in many ways. We did have some late buds on that magnolia that did last a bit longer. But we look forward to 2015 for having full bloom again.
      We're having again a cold spell with quite some wind but not tornado like; thank goodness.

      No this is not normal because we had such a rough winter with frost on and off. They cannot handle any frost... Too bad and we hope for 2015 that they finally will be able after several years to fully bloom.

    Oh, I feel your pain, Mariette! We have three Japanese magnolias - all nice and brown now, thanks to the frost. The good news is that there are new buds forming, so at least we might get a second wave of blossoms after the threat of frost is gone. <3
