Northern Arizona has lots of surprises and we did not know, like many others, that there are 12,000-foot (3,657 m) mountains in the area!
Sure, Arizona is about a whole lot more than just desert without trees...
We're so glad we selected a scenic route, going from Grand Canyon Village to Sedona, in order to see this magnificent tall Humphreys Peak at Elevation: 12,635' (3,851 m).
Looking at the ►you can follow the route we took from Grand Canyon National Park, southbound.
Following the 180 which leads to Flagstaff and you see Humphreys Peak just above Flagstaff.
Just took this off Mapquest.com's site for: Village Loop Dr, Grand Canyon, Arizona, 86023.
Taken from Flickr which shows you Humphreys Peak, as seen from I-40.

On the road towards Humphreys Peak... we had such perfect weather the entire 7 days!
The previous photo above, Pieter took with the Nikon camera and this is taken with my iPhone, showing the hood of our Buick rental car. Love the sun rays in this picture.
After one hour and 15 minutes we're nearing the San Francisco Mountain.

So San Francisco Mountain was once about 16,000-20,000 feet (4,876-6,096 m).
It is also Arizona's only strato-volcano.
We traveled right through KAIBAB National Forest ←click it.

This photo is from the above mentioned Red Mountain Volcano link.

Indeed, the Coconino National Forest is one of the most diverse National Forests in the country!
We are nearing our goal: Humphreys Peak the tall 12,000 footer in Arizona is in sight!
Keeping in mind, that all the time we are driving at an elevated level!
One last shot through the window, with my iPad... Again those sun rays make it look rather unique.
Hope you enjoyed this ride...

Happy weekend to you as well.

It looks fantastic. Beutiful places for sure.
ReplyDeleteDearest Daniela,
DeleteToo bad this is at a 30 hour one-way drive from our home or else we would love to go there often!
Happy weekend and hugs,

What a great ride with beautiful scenery! I love the photo of Red Mountain Volcano. It sure looks unusual and really spectacular! I also love the last photo. The sun rays look very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday and have a great weekend!
Dearest Tamago,
DeleteIt sure was a great ride, full of surprises and so much to see. the sun rays are an unexpected iPad magic!
Hugs and happy weekend to you.
Mariette
Dear Mariette,
ReplyDeleteThat is a scenic drive that you have taken on your way to Sedona! I have been that way before and I know it is very rugged with a diverse landscape. Once, we took that drive at night during a meteor shower and it was amazing to see the meteor's falling in the wide open skies. Arizona is such a magical place and Sedona is one of the most beautiful places there. You certainly had a beautiful vacation!
Hugs xo
Karen
Dearest Karen,
DeleteYes we did, thanks to Internet we can look up such routes and than go! We loved the diverse landscape very much, a joy to drive. You were fortunate for watching that meteor shower at night.
Next post will be about Sedona area, when we took again the most scenic routes going there and we will be back to visit it for several days.
Hugs and happy weekend to you,
Mariette

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading your next post about beautiful Sedona!!!!
Have a nice weekend!!! Many hugs!!!!
Dearest Marie-Anne,
DeleteOh, absolute beautiful scenery and quite interesting with Humphreys Peak being the only strato volcano in Arizona, and we had not idea about that cinder cone volcano of Red Mountain! So we learned a lot on this trip and I do love to share that.
Wishing you a lovely Sunday, here it still is afternoon and we have tea right now...
Hugs,
Mariette
Beautiful country! Thanks for stopping by to visit and leaving a thoughtful comment about my Queen visitor.
ReplyDeleteDearest Sarah,
DeleteWell, if one loves nature in all its splendor one can only marvel, be it some unusual mountains in Arizona or your lovely photos of the rare Queen Butterfly in your Texas garden.
Happy weekend to you!
Hugs,
Mariette
