1978 - P.J.C. Vedder's Modern Mushroom Growing Book Published in English

It was only within two years since that very 1st trip to Australia, for lecturing, that husband Pieter's Dutch book on Mushroom Growing got now published in English as well.
See below post for info about new published English book!
Following the nature of comments I received on my previous post, I'd like to give some more information about my retired husband Pieter...
This cartoon was created by Mac at the VIIIth International Congress on Mushroom Science 1971 (ISMS)
at Imperial College London
PJC Vedder
Principal of a Famous Training Centre
~
From youth up-getting them Mushroom minded
So there it was; 1978 the first English publication of his book!
Already in 1961, Pieter wrote his 1st Dutch Moderne Champignonteelt and in 1964 his 2nd edition, in 1968 his 3rd edition, in 1971 his 4rd edition and in 1978 his 5th edition and also his 1st English edition.

The above article (Dutch) got published in "Bedrijfsontwikkeling" September, 1979, page 872
Vedder's Modern Mushroom Growing in five languages.
In 1961 the book 'Moderne Champignonteelt' appeared by Mr. P.J.C. Vedder. This manual was the successor of the 'Manual for Mushroom Culture' from 1958 by Bels. New revised editions are being published regularly. In 1978 the fifth edition came off the press.
Vedder's book, a cultivation manual, is a reflection of the mushroom industry in The Netherlands, with aspects of research, information, education, growers organization, marketing, processing, etc.
Vedder in 1963 became Director (Principal) of the Center for Mushroom Cultivation Education in Horst, Province of Limburg.
The developments of the mushroom industry in The Netherlands, drew the attention of many from abroad. Requests therefore came for allowing to have 'Moderne Champignon Teelt' translated. This yielded the result that Vedder's book now lies before us in five languages. Dutch (5th edition) 1978, German 1966, French 1974, English 1978 and Spanish 1978 (several editions). A unique event. They are not short tutorials, but books of about 400 pages.
A manual in five languages has never been published in the more than 350–year anniversary of mushroom cultivation.
The manual now covers 25% of the total language area, so that many can draw knowledge from the mushroom events in The Netherlands. In the Dutch history of agriculture and horticulture a manual in five languages is unique.

Pieter J.C. Vedder got numerous references.
His colleagues world wide responded with kind letters.
Like here by The Mushroom Growers' Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr. Fred C. Atkins who writes about the arrival of your marvelous book and the generous inscription made me a very happy man.
The British have had a very close and long standing relationship with Pieter.
This yielded him The Sinden Award 1982

Another very kind letter from the USA from the American Mushroom Institute
Dear Pieter:
I wish to congratulate you on the most informative and educational
book I ever read on mushroom growing. It is an encyclopedia on
mushroom growing. It is a complete review of growing, diseases,
mechanization and many small detailed aspects of growing analyzed
with great knowledge and experience. No wonder that this practical
book is translated in so many languages.
As an Agronomist with 34 years working with the mushroom industry,
I always find very valuable information and excellent guidance. Only
a dedicated teacher, grower, and researcher like you could wrap up
this valuable book that I am sure will have a constant increased
demand. I am very proud that I was one of the first to have this
translation right-off-the-press.
I am very pleased that I also got the opportunity to personally give
you the letter of invitation to the AMI conference in San Francisco.
I am sure you will enjoy meeting our growers as well as our hospitality.
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Sincerely,
Aron Kinrus, Agronomist
Public Relations Coordinator
Lastly, but in fact THE most important one came on June 13, 1979 from Pieter's Boss:

MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES

I have heard from the press about your book "Moderne Champignonteelt" now having been published in a fifth language. With this unique happening I would like to warmly compliment you.
I am pleased that at an international level your work and with that also agricultural education is being propagated.
Although it is not my habit to approach in this way authors from agricultural education circles, I have felt to make an exception for this particular case.
THE DIRECTOR OF THE AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION
 (Dr. Ir. P.K. Schenk)

No wonder that copies of his book still are being offered at a better price than they ever sold for right off the press!
This is not the actual cover...
Wonder why they put this on?!
Amazon UK offers the Spanish Edition for $ 756.13...
Thanks for your visits and comments - greatly appreciated, also by Pieter!

Trips to Australia

Being the founder, principal, and teacher of the World's ONLY practical training college about mushroom growing in the world,  in The Netherlands, my husband Pieter got to lecture the world over.
So here I want to start our Australia trips series with his FIRST trip to 'Down Under'.
Thank you all so very much for all the comments and visits to my previous posts written.
It means a lot to my husband, and of course to me, as it does lift up his spirit.
Let's enjoy our highlights and relive them; sharing them with you.
This post is nothing spectacular but just as an opening...
This is the official AMGA or Australian Mushroom Growers Association flyer for their 6th Mushroom Industry Short Course.
30th June - 3rd July, 1976
The above is the edited, handwritten part, printed out...
This Mushroom Short Course was open to Australian and New Zealand Mushroom Growers.
Lodging was at the Parramatta Travelodge Motel, corner of Marsden St. and Western Highway, Parramatta - Western Sydney
Nowadays this must be the Parramatta City Motel and no doubt it has changed over the years...
Airtravel by Qantas, Australia's Overseas Airline.
The venue was held at PARRAMATTA LEAGUES CLUB, at the 1st Floor.
Parramatta is the river that lies close to this building, just click the pink hyperlinks.
It started out with a Welcoming Banquet and Official Opening by the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources.
Husband Pieter covered almost the entire 1st day of training.
As a Bonus Gift to all participants they offered an extract copy from Pieter's book, about 'Mushroom Pests and Diseases - Their Prevention and Control'
In the background information, there is written that his book has had 4 Dutch editions and is translated in German, French and soon in English.
In the end it got translated into 8 languages and has been called the 'Mushroom Bible'.
On the 3rd and final day a Farm Walk and Practical Demonstration by Pieter at the farm of John Cox, Dural Road, Maraylya.
Also a trade exhibition of mushroom farm machinery, chemicals and growing materials.
Australian Barbecue Lunch and rounded up with a General Discussion and Answering Time.
The planning for this international event had started out on the 1st of September, 1975
Mr. Van Dorresteyn had been at the Practical Training Center in The Netherlands to study, as did several others.
We just learned that Mr. John W. Miller is still around!
Would be great to hear from others as well...
Husband Pieter did stay in Australia from June 28 till July 14, 1976.
He did visit 11 different Mushroom farms after the Short Course with over 100 participants from all over Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand.
Before and after the Short Course, Pieter did visit the following mushroom farms:
1. Joe van Dorresteyn (Dutch/Australian)
2. John Seltenrych (Dutch/Australian)
3. Norman Johnson
4. Robert N Tolson
5. Graham Price
6. John W. Baker
7. Johnny Cox
8. Hank Young (Dutch/Australian)
9. Sannen brothers (Dutch/Australian)

Sure such trips to Australia were far from a vacation or sight seeing trip, but husband Pieter did enjoy it very much and he felt honored for being invited to speak and teach.
It taught him the vastness of this great continent, such a contrast with The Netherlands, the most densely populated country of the European Union and one of the most densely populated countries in the world!
