Daring to Alter 7/8 Pants into Knickerbockers

If your legs are very long, certain pants can look rather odd...
So, what do you think?
Looking better as a Knickerbockers or not...
Too late for reversing my decision at this time!
Done on September 1st, 1985...
Still got the knickerbockers and also these shoes.
Top got stolen in Indonesia, loved its cotton comfort.
Photo from April 23, 1988 showing you both legs being 'knickerbocker' style... 😏

  1. Love your knickerbockers style! You look very cute in them. I usually avoid pants of this length because I prefer not to show my O shaped legs :-) You have long beautiful legs, Mariette. Love your tops as well. (Too bad the cotton top was stolen.)

Have a great day, Mariette xo

    1. Dearest Tamago,
Thank you and I've always loved knickerbockers but mostly in my size 4 they were way too short. When I had to bend my knee, it came out... But this one I could make covering my knee.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. Hello Mariette, Your sewing skills are up to anything, and you are also lucky that there is more variation in women's clothes, so operations like this are possible--although it's true that knickerbockers were originally a men's style. As an additional bonus, I'm sure that these were more comfortable in Georgia's hot summers.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Yes, knickerbockers just like the plus fours, that my Dad wore, and also Pieter, were men's style. For the Georgia climate they were perfect indeed.

    3. Dearest Katie Isabella,
Haha, hope it did not literally knock your socks off.
It is above all about seeing the possibility and then for daring to use the scissors!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

      Abrazos,
      Mariette

    1. Dearest Grace,
Thank you but I've never liked pants that are too short, it stumps off a person's silhouette and of course, every inch of fabric is about money.
Those shoes I still have, purchased in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland and I only had the heel height altered a bit as I never liked 'high' heels...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. I added a comment about under someone else, but for me...I like both lengths. I don't wear knee length anything as my legs are very extremely muscular.

    1. Dearest Katie Isabella,
That is all right; the same blogger family!
It depends how tall a person is, a slender person can wear shorter pants but I've never liked them, they distort the silhouette. For the very reason you cleverly avoid wearing knee length. Yes, each hem line kind of draws its attention and it does stump you off, so you have to know your limitations and accentuate what's best. But I'm not a person that follows trends as I know better myself what works and what not... Lots of women just follow blindly whatever change is being pushed for sales; no matter how odd they look in wearing that!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  7. Did you put elastic in the hems to make 'knickerbockers' Mariette? Kinda like 'plus fours' in England! Here I think they call that length, just below the knee, Capri pants - not a good length ever on me as I'm 5'8" - but I do like my pants cropped above the ankle for winter wear with short boots, and cropped shorter than that in summer with sandals.

    1. Dearest Mary,
No, Mary there is no elastic in the hems as that is not how a true knickerbocker is supposed to be. Mine are banded and close with a button. They ought to be gathered and banded just below the knee. Those Plus Fours had to be an extra four inches below the knee! Captri pants are the modern day leggings that end about four inches below the knee but they are not baggy like the Plus Fours...
Funny that you like to 'shorten' your silhouette by moving the hemline 'up'... Never liked that style. My formal study was three years of Fashion and I actually could design anything from a photo. That's what we studied for. But since living here and having found the Outlets where you can find Couture for a very low price, I've completely abandoned that!
You do beat me with two inches... well, guess I'm at the shrinking age now.
      Hugs,
      Mariette
