After Painter did a LOUSY Job Husband Pieter Painted our Home

Don't know if it was because we were immigrants, but we sure had a lemon of a painter!

Using thinned paint for the full price...

As you can see in this photo, he did not even bother to take the shutters off the wall, for painting behind them.

Both of us did hate the original color, seen where the shutters were... so drab!

The house we moved in, got newly built but we had had no say in the color.

On June 30, Pieter started with this mega job.

Below, was our version after Pieter finished. Shutters in a darker green and the house a kind of off-white.

Pieter also decided to paint the fascia boards green, they did frame the house a lot better.

Photo from January 16, 1988 with snow on the roof...

We left our DUTCH TREAT behind...
Campbell Soup forced us more or less to move to Pennsylvania.
With heavy heart, we did, we had put so much work into our home!

Glad I've archived our old photos.

workmen sometimes do such things, but they shouldn't!!!!!

    1. Dearest Claudia,
No, in general we do find excellent workmen and this really has been the exception in all those 37 years.
The house indeed looked lovely but the sad thing was, after all the work Campbell Soup forced us to move...
      Hugs,

  2. That's quite a job painting the outside of a house. The house looks very nice Mariette.

Yes, it was one of those mega tasks that Pieter has completed.
The result was great but we had to leave it all behind...

  3. There are so many awful trades people, whether they're bona fide scammers or not. Everything is done to the lowest and cheapest level possible, as I've found out with my townhouse. Your house looked terrific after Pieter's painting. I do love white with green shutters; my childhood farmhouse home was white with green shutters. 🙂🏡

    1. Dearest Kim,
Well, we both have learned that in this world you constantly have to fight hard for your own, hard earned money. Yes, there are several that only like to take as much money from you as they possibly can. Being a woman or elderly makes us more vulnerable.
We too loved the color combination, glad it reminded you of your childhood farmhouse!

Yes, it sure was after all the work done by us.
We turned it into a nice 'nest'.

  5. Hello Mariette, It is so disappointing when we hire professionals and they do shoddy work. Some painting was done in my apartment here when I was in Ohio one year, and when I came back there were paint spots on almost everything I owned--that painter, hired by the landlord, obviously did not own a drop cloth, and did not respect me or my possessions. Even with all that paint slathered around, I still found many missed spots on the walls! There were thousands of paint drops on the marble floors, which I had to painstakingly remove with a razor blade.

    1. Dearest Jim,
It is very sad that some so-called professionals don't seem to have any pride in their work or worse, don't respect someone else's property as such for being careful.
We've had workers using the wrong grout and had to painstakingly remove it from the tiles with a razor blade... Makes you feel like a slave and it could have been so easily avoided. Doing a good job and being careful by using a drop cloth in your case... Sad.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  6. Oh my gosh your husband did a beautiful job of painting the exterior, as you say quite a huge endeavour, looks fabulous. Can't believe you had to leave so soon afterwards!

Yes, that was quite a challenge but we had no option, could not afford to have it done twice... We really had put our heart into it and blood, sweat and tears... but they made us move away.
      Hugs,

  9. Alejandro was such a great handyman when he was young and full of energy and did such amazing things around our farm years ago. Just like Pieter who did a great job painting your beautiful house. Professionals are not that, sometimes either... and the prices they charge !
Loved visiting and how do you like what's going on with the elections !! I am appalled. Very upset, such fraud.
    Love,
    Fabby

    1. Dearest Fabby,
You both sure have walked the walk and been there; a very active couple.
Back then we sure could not afford to pay a 'professional' painter, again.
We both started a new life, starting all over and the interest for the mortgage was around 12%. A far cry from now... We do live in an upside down world it looks like and fraud is something they deem as being 'normal'... Not for our conscious.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  10. We unfortunately had lousy job done to our home as well, although good jobs are always done except for this one time. It must have been a really big task for your husband Pieter to paint the house. But with his work, it looks beautiful!

    1. Dearest Tamago,
It sure is unfortunately that some of us have to deal with a lousy job...
Our last painting job for the home we live in now, was just excellent! Such a huge difference.
It sure was an almost overwhelming task, done aside a regular, demanding job.
We both were proud of the end result and guess, that's why it sold well too. Pieter also had meticulously caulked every crack or opening.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Thank you and yes, the difference between Pieter's meticulous job was quite striking in comparison to that lousy painter's.
Pieter reads the comments himself... Thanks!
