It looks like our Georgia garden critters are taking things in their own hands by seeding some Sorghum plants from Birdseed!
First I thought it was corn, by looking at the plants leaves...
This was on September 8.
Against the repurposed Umbrella Post with Bird Feeder on top.
Pieter always leaves seed out for the mourning doves and for the brown thrasher, they love to search on the ground. Also the Cardinals and others.
So three plants have grown up from sprouted seeds...
This is close to the Bird Feeder that I mentioned in my previous post.
Pieter repurposed that parasol pole on Christmas day, 1998—it kept well!
They seem to be ripening perfectly well—this was on September 21.
We just leave them there for the birds to enjoy later...

Yes, here too. I found it was odd that various wheat plants were growing by our bird feeders. That's nature at work. Birds spread seeds and bees pollinate.

Love the sorghum plants. I have one growing in one of my planters. Not sure if it will go to see before frost hits. Like you, we thought it was corn until we did a bit of research.
Watching birds discover seedy plants is a true joy. They had a wonderful time with the sunflower sports that came up.
I hope that you and Pieter are not, or will not experience the aftermath of Ian.

Watching birds every day is a joy and we continue feeding them.
So far it is calm here and Ian is doing his destruction in Florida. So sad for all the damage it leaves in its path!

That is interesting. We have not had plants from birdseed, but today we found a little tree which was not there a fortnight ago. The birds have been contributing to the garden again :)

ReplyDeleteWe have a couple of empty planters on our balcony and plants did spout in them although we have no idea what they are. I am guessing they came from seeds dispersed by the wind.
