It was not easy to watch our Japanese Magnolias (scientific name Magnolia x Soulangeana) opening up on such dark and dreary days...
But today it was SUNNY!
Yay, that warms one's heart...
This was on February 16... no sunshine at all.
This is our 2nd Magnolia tree and I must say that a big tree fell into it when still young.
That's why it is so lanky but it does its very best!
Did spot lots of insects inside those blooms and that means the birds like our resident Eastern Phoebe can gather their protein once again.
This side of the house we use for feeding our birds and we observe them from the bay window area where we enjoy our meals.
Love their color transformation from dark bud to light inside petals...
Once more a picture taken today with blue sky and towards our home.
And from beneath the lanky one towards the home.
We ought to have the rose arbor and everything else pressure washed again...
Now first we live through pollen season!
But spring is arriving!
And by the looks of things, your pollen season will arrive sooner than later, Mariette. I love those blossoms on the Japanese magnolias; it won't be long before we will be seeing those in our neck of the woods, just not in our own yard. I think we have too much shade for them to grow successfully.
ReplyDeleteBlessings for a great week ahead!
Dearest Martha Jane,
DeleteWell, we got to admire some in a darker shade, in Savannah two weeks ago—they don't have the frost at night, like we have.
True, the pollen season is coming but with that also warmer weather and sunshine.
Hugs,
Mariette
WOW, they are so beautiful when their blooms open. We have a Magnolia in our front yard. It was supposed to be a small 5 footer and it's about 20 feet tall now.
ReplyDeleteDearest Brian,
DeleteWell, that shows that those Magnolias LOVE the South East—as we do!
They are so rewarding and a joy to look at every spring.
Hugs,
Mariette
Mariette
Mariette, the blooms are glorious! We will have to wait until April or May to see ours, so I enjoyed getting a preview with yours!
ReplyDeleteDearest Kim,
DeleteYes, after the dark and dreary winter those magnolia blooms are indeed a glorious sight.
At your latitude things start blooming quite a lot later, just like in our birth country.
Hugs,
Mariette
It is so beautiful Mariette!
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteThank you and especially for you in a very cold winter climate a nice view.
Hugs,
Mariette
What a glorious color for the flowers. The first ones to bloom around here will be the white magnolia of our neighbors. But they usually last one or two days before the freeze returns. The photos you took just are what I needed to see! Color! Though we have had 3 days of sun after our 11 degrees and 4 inches of snow. It is just now receding into one inch of frozen hard white stuff. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteDearest Lynn and Precious,
DeleteThank you, we love this color very much.
Well, our flowers have also gotten frozen by late frost and turned into ugly brown blobs... Only in June we got again new leaves.
Be careful in the icy mess from your 11°F frost!
Hugs,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteOne of the nicest things about following blogs is that I get to see gardens progressing into the seasons. Lovely to see the magnolias....and the pansies! Makes me hopeful for our spring which is weeks away. We still have snow on the ground which makes our sunny days very bright indeed!
Thanks for visiting my blog....things are strange there.
My very best to you and Pieter..............Suzi/smartcat
Dearest Suzi,
DeleteYes, such spring bodes are to be shared with those that live in cold regions and it is our pleasure doing so.
Glad we don't have to deal with any snow.
Hugs,
Pieter & Mariette
Beste Mariette,
Liefs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, In just a few days there is such a difference in the blooming flowers. I surely miss the early spring in the North, with its display of such delicate flowers, and everything coming back to life, slowly at first, and then faster and faster. Of course, in Ohio February is still a month of Deep Freeze!
ReplyDelete--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteYes, Ohio is lagging behind central Georgia—no doubt.
We both enjoy this time of the year when everything starts budding out and birds become active for nesting.
Hugs,
Mariette
Abrazos,
Mariette
Damn they are such pretty flowers, I don't remember ever seeing anything like them before
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteThank you and they sure are pretty!
Hugs,
Mariette
Magnolias are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteDearest Eastside Cats,
DeleteThank you and they are and worthy to share with all of you!
Hugs,
Mariette
The magnolias are beautiful! I won a miniature one in a giveaway some time ago. It arrived as a stick with a root! Not what I was expecting, but I put it in a large pot and it does flower every year. It has large buds but I don't think they will open for at least another week or two.
ReplyDeleteDearest Memories of Eric and Flynn,
DeleteYour miniature one must looks very special! Of course in your region it takes some more time to put on its annual show.
Hugs,
Mariette + Kitties
I don't have any of those in my yard, so I have to enjoy all of those in our neighbourhood...but not yet. Thanks for showing and sharing yours! So gorgeous! I love that color, too!
ReplyDeleteDearest Ingrid,
DeleteNo doubt you are lacking behind us for some time... That's why I love to share ours and thanks for your compliment.
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh how pretty! Yoo have a beautiful home! The blooms look like tree candy!
ReplyDeleteDearest Adorapurr,
DeleteThank you and those blooms do brighten one's days after winter!
Hugs,
Mariette + Kitties
Your house is gorgeous! There's a lot of Magnolia's in our neck of the woods. Spring has sprung for us too (Southeast Georgia). I'm preparing our property of over 6 acres for flowers. I want lots of pretty's this year. Plus, I'm turning the yard water back on. We had turned it off and drained it for winter. Don't want any frozen pipes!
ReplyDeleteI like your blog. Very nice.
Blessings.
Sparky/Pamela
(Our mutual blog friend is Debby in Cal.)
Dearest Sparky/Pamela,
DeleteThank you and no doubt in your area you find lots of early blooming Japanese Magnolias. We saw them early in Savannah as well.
Hugs,
Mariette
Ohhh so beautiful! WOW! Japanese Magnolia is just amazing...
ReplyDeleteLove from Titti
Dearest Titti,
DeleteGlad you enjoy our Japanese Magnolias—they're meant to be shared.
Hugs,
Mariette
Beautiful and cheerful. It really does feel like spring is arriving!
ReplyDeleteDearest Peter,
DeleteThank you and yes, it feels really like that, sunny and mild weather and such blooms.
Hugs,
Mariette
Mariette
Hello Mariette, I didn't know the tree was called Japanese Magnolia. Mom used to have one but not as large as the one you have, and she called it tulip tree. It looked like tulips before flowers fully opened. Such beautiful early spring trees. I have a feeling with this early Spring like weather all of my azaleas and other spring shrubs will be bit by some very cold weather. It's just too warm around here this early. It is supposed to be in 70's one day next week. It's rainy and gloomy outside today, that's o.k. as I have plenty to take care of inside. Hugs, Betsy
ReplyDeleteDearest Betsy,
DeleteOh, there are different sizes and it depends on the soil, sunlight and nutrition they get. While in Savannah we saw some very dark ones in a shrub size, young ones.
Tulip tree is different, we got one but that blooms later:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liriodendron_tulipifera
Spring is a week later than usual, at least for the blooming of the Japanese Magnolias. They have bloomed on my Birthday so that is why we know.
Most years however they bloomed on Mom's Birthday on February 12 and yes, we have had late and unexpected frost. Hope it will not be this year.
It is again cloudy and showers are expected. We only had a few sunny and warm days!
Hugs,
Mariette
Your magnolias are magnificent and your garden looks like a slice of heaven. Thanks for your kind comments for Dani.
ReplyDeleteDearest Wendy,
DeleteThank you and you and Dani deserve the words I wrote!
Hugs,
Mariette
So beautiful! Pollen season. I forgot that's coming! 🌸
ReplyDeleteDearest Sandi,
DeleteYes, pollen season is here...
Hugs,
Mariette
They are so beautiful when their blooms open.
ReplyDeleteYour stunning photos are such a treat!
Your garden does indeed look like a patch of heaven.
Hugs and blessings, Mariette
Dearest Veronica,
DeleteOh, it is still a beautiful sight, we enjoy them every day!
Tried to make some good photos and I also have to say that their fragrance is lovely.
That corner for sure is bird paradise—we observe so many species during breakfast and of course we feed them.
Hugs,
Mariette
Here they are also starting to emerge, the magnolias are the first to announce spring.
ReplyDeletexoxo
Dearest Cristina,
DeletePortugal is not far behind Georgia and indeed the first blooms to announce spring.
Hugs,
Mariette
Those are so pretty! I really want to plant one of those, but we've not had very good luck with trees. I can't wait for spring! We have a few daffodils with buds, and I'm so happy to see some color.
ReplyDeleteDearest Danielle,
DeleteThank you and this sure is the BEST time of the year when color is coming back into our lives.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Mariette
What stunning blooms! And though I may have noted this before, I will state again that your home is gorgeous. It looks like a bed and breakfast that I would happily visit.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Darla Sands
Dearest Darla,
DeleteThank you, now the wind has blown them almost all down... The beauty only lasts for a couple of weeks.
You are always welcome to stay at our Rose Suite downstairs!
Hugs,
Mariette
