Lacquered Polypore Ganoderma lucidum

Already on June 26, 2017 my Pieter found this perfect 'Lakzwam' is Dutch for Lacquered Polypore Ganoderma lucidum
It indeed looks like lacquered!
Showing its polypore on the underside
Looks really freshly lacquered!
A perfect species for some good photos.

    1. Dearest Lynn and Precious,
No it is not a rare one and you find it anywhere old tree trunks are being decomposed. This one was an exceptional perfect one and showing the lacquered part so well.

They grow only on decomposing wood or tree stumps.

    1. Dearest Lorrie,
Well, they ware quite common, also in your region but you must look for them on old tree trunks or stumps as they decay the dying wood. That is there job in nature to digest all that what humans and animals can't.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  6. Very pretty! Is the 'laquer' a liquid exudate?
I shall have to check on our old tree stumps for them here.

    1. Dearest Ingrid,
The lacquer is part of this species' natural appearance!
If the tree stumps are still fresh they might not 'yet' show.

  7. Dearest Mariette; First of all, thank you very much let me know the word "polypore" (p;) I checked the word with PC, Yes; its brownish part really looks like a kind of lacquered haha. I was happy reading your new post. I DO hope you are doing FINE both "physically & mentally". Temperature is getting a little bit comfortable here. I was a bit busy taking care of the weeds outside; not my favorite housework. Loots of LOVE, from Japan.

    1. Dearest Miyako,
Good for you to check the word polypore, meaning pores on the underside.
You are fortunate for still being able to weed yourself as I can't do this anymore.
But still grateful for being alive the way I am!
Nights indeed are getting a lot cooler over the past couple of days.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  10. That is, indeed, a strange looking mushroom. It DOES look lacquered. A unique find for Pieter. Mushrooms are expensive at the store. I just bought a bunch of them for a dish my son is preparing - they were $5.

    Happy October days, dear Mariette.

This is one of many wild mushrooms and quite common.
Not to be compared with the edible ones that are grown commercially...

  11. Hello Mariette, It does look lacquered. Is the surface hard and brittle, or does it only look that way? Nature is indeed amazing in its infinite variety and beauty.

It is a rather common fungus which exists the world over.
Also in Asia it is known as a medicinal mushroom.

No problem and this is also an Asian medicinal mushroom, claiming to have cancer fighting compounds. Pieter and I never supported such claims as it is mainly money oriented...
