For the cozy winter season coming up, what a joy for serving some hot tea for friends. In order to do this in a traditional and romantic style, I found for you a Vintage Silver-Tea-Strainer with Cherubs. Very unique piece and it will be hard for finding a second one. The four silver hallmarks.
This tea strainer came from Germany but I need some help with the markings.
Does anybody have an idea which silver maker had these marks?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
A big thank you to Johanna Gehrlein, author of the book: Rosen-Bestecke and expert in rose silver.
According to her it is: German silver from Hanau by silversmith J.L. Schlingloff. The 4th hallmark clearly does show the initials J L with the S over them.

Johanna did cleverly point out in her comment that such a strainer can be used as a sugar sifter for decorating cake, pancakes or waffles. Many uses in the kitchen.

I use a teapot most mornings with loose leaves and a strainer, as I think that it has a better flavour. However if I am in a hurry just place the Twinnings English teabags in the teapot and that makes a nice cup of tea.

ReplyDeleteI am thrilled to see this wonderful German true silver tea strainer. It is Hanau made from the manufaktur of J.L. Schlingloff. Thats really wonderful quality and adds some luxury to every tea table. Such a tea strainer is very helpful in the kitchen. You can use them to strain tea but also to strain little amounts of other liquid. And they are helpful to spread sugar on pancakes and so on. Thank you for showing this amazing treasure.

ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty tea strainer. I love the intricate and delicate design.
I have many, ranging from strictly utilitarian to a pretty little silver plate my sister gave me, nothing as pretty as that one though. Like Johanna I use them in the kitchen whenever I need a fine mesh strainer.
I always use loose tea because the flavor and variety are so much better, and I would go broke if I had to buy tea bags. I drink a lot of tea. Depending on which pot I use I also use strainer inserts....good for making a single cup too.
Right now I am drinking Finest Russian Caravan from Upton Tea Company. It's really an afternoon blend but I drink it anytime. I don't think the Tea Police will come after me!
