{Sarasota Bay, Florida - Great Egret}

Some photos from our walk around Sarasota Bay, when we were staying at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota
Photos taken with my iPhone...
Shown here is the Great Egret or Casmerodius Albus. Family: Herons Ardeidae.
Or in Dutch also called 'Grote Zilverreiger'...
Formerly known as the 'American Egret', 'Common Egret', 'Large Egret', 'White Egret', 'Great White Egret', and 'Great White Heron', its official name in North America is now Great Egret.
One of the most magnificent of our herons.
Great reflection of this majestic Great Egret but it soon took off and I wish we had the better camera with us...
Great Egret has a yellow bill and black legs.
The Great White Heron is white with yellow bill and legs and is called Grote Witte Reiger in Dutch.
To us it didn't make any sense why the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall at Sarasota Bay needed to be in a purplish color...? In our opinion, this is such a disturbing color in this natural Bay environment.
One can only wonder about this eye sore and visual polution... as friend Tammy wrote about in her blog posts about a similar case (see below post).
The entire Performing Arts Hall also has mirrored glass.
That allowed us to take a selfie or better said; a 'WeFie with our iPhone.
If from 1969 on this already has been purplish...?
For sure the building and its function is a tremendous asset to Sarasota City!
All in all we had a very interesting walk.

  6. Hello Mariette, At first I thought that something had gone wrong with the color balance of your camera. This building (an arts center, no less) is a far cry from those small pastel-colored houses that one often sees in tropical areas.

The good side is that this emphasizes the beauty that is all around in Sarasota. There is something thrilling about sighting those big water birds. Taiwan has lots of them; supposedly the island is on a lot of migration paths.

We did enjoy this walk very much, just what one needs for unwinding after a hectic drive from Orlando to Sarasota. Nature alwasy works so calming. But even for a color-blind person like Pieter this was disturbing.

I really envy you this trip to Florida, that is really envy you this trip to Florida, it is one of the places I love most of all those I have visited so far.
How wonderful to have this egret-heron (LOL!) on your doorstep!
And geeee... yes the Performing Arts Hall's color is quite shocking, let's hope they rethink it one day!

Great White Heron is more the formal Old World language I guess and here it is also called Egret. Whichever; it was a majestic and tall water bird.
Hope you did not revert back to the dreaded Word Verification...

  21. Hello dear Mariette

I agree! However, architects and designers are always pushing the boundaries and wanting to be the next "big thing".
I look to old buildings in Europe, Italy and Greece in particular designed by the Masters.
And to the pretty terracotta roofed houses in the villages all through France, Italy and beyond for seemlessly blending in with the landscape.

A lovely "wefie" of you both!
    Hugs

    1. Dearest Shane,
Indeed, one can marvel at the beauty we find in France, Italy or Spain and even Greece. Blending in with its surroundings. That is pleasing to the eye instead of such a shocking contrast that works negatively.
      Yeah, a we-fie instead of a selfie.
      Hugs,

  22. I agree, the purple is very intrusive, and really does not blend at all with the environment. Maybe that was the intention when they decided on the exterior paint.

  23. Dear Mariette,
You have taken a beautiful photo of the Great White Heron - it must have been a thrill to see it! It certainly is a puzzle that the building would be painted purple. Purple was a very popular color in that year, as I recall. I had a purple coat and purple suede shoes ( I was in high school), and Jimi Hendrix had a popular song called 'Purple Haze'. Perhaps that contributed to the choice of colors at that time. I painted my bedroom purple, too - but I hated it and painted it yellow. (smile)
I love your new blog header - your home is like an enchanted cottage.

We can't tell if this is the original color from 1969 or if this great idea originated in later years.
You are right, I too had a self crocheted mini-dress in two shades of purple.

  24. Sweet Mariette,

I have been visiting Sarasota for 40+ years now and the beautiful wildlife just can't be beat. What a joy it must have been for you to see this beautiful egret perched and ready for a meal at your hotel. It's always fun to observe their hunting techniques.

I have always thought that the color of Van Wezel leaves much to be desired. I guess it really stands out. My parents live across the bay on Longboat Key and the purple building can't be missed. A more subtle color in my opinion would be appropriate. That said, I know the performance hall features wonderful shows.

Love your 'we'-fie! Such a handsome couple!
