{Jasminum Sambac - Jasmine Grand Duke of Tuscany}

Last year we bought a new Jasminum Sambac - Jasmine Grand Duke of Tuscany from Logee's  and this year it did yield its first fragrant blossoms.
August 9, this beauty opened with yet another bud underneath.
Look what heavy rain did in just one day...
Waiting 3 more days did yield another double blooming, highly fragrant beauty.
They are so lovely!
We hope it will look bigger next year!

  1. It looks beautiful Mariette, it is a vigorous climber like some that can get a bit evasive.
I love the perfume of jasmine.

    1. Dearest Kay,
There are climbing jasmines indeed but not this double blooming and slow growing cultivar. We used to have a semi-evergreen pink blooming jasmine against our gazebo and that was quite invasive. The painter cut it off, without asking us... and since it was so ugly ever since, we totally removed it. But this variety has a much stronger, heavenly fragrance!
Hugs and happy weekend to you and enjoy lovely spring weather.

  3. This is definitely like what we have on our balcony. A friend came last nite and was admiring the blooms. He said he tried to grow some in Kentucky but the plants couldn't survive because of the cold. He thought ours were from Egypt and Syria. The plant guy told us they were Lebanese and Egyptian. Definitely from this area, of course, where such plants are able to grow. Not Kuwait, which is a desert country. Have a good Friday. Tammy

So happy for you that you enjoy your fragrant Jasmine Grand Duke of Tuscany on the balcony! The temperatures in your region are right, as long as you can water adequately. We have to keep them inside our greenhouse during winter as they absolutely cannot handle frost!
Jasmine or in Persian Yasameen ("gift from God") may have derived from Persia...
      Enjoy your Friday!

    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europ%C3%A4ischer_Pfeifenstrauch

      Mariette

    2. Interessant, liebe Mariette. Mock Orange habe ich noch nie gehört. ;-) So lernt man immer weiter dazu.

Thank you! Just a pity that the rain browned the first flowers... and since it is a young plant, we did not have that many blossoms to photograph yet. The fragrance is heavenly indeed; wish I could have that always on my bedside table; would make for sweet dreams!
Happy weekend to you as well.

ps. oh, gula melaka (palm sugar) sounds healthier. And I'm happy that my post helped you bring back sweet memory, my friend.

    1. Dearest Miyako,
Thank you and indeed the rain did ruin some of our blossoms this summer. Never mind, the plants look strong and healthy though. Well, this flower never will be bigger as this jasmine variety only yields flowers that are 2.5 cm across and no more.
Indeed, the gula melaka is indeed healthier due to its lower glycemic index and even more so the: Gula Java Coconut blossom sugar
A big difference is also that it completely dissolves and makes for such smooth sweets like you showed us. Indeed that did bring back sweet memories! Loved the sweets at the end of your post: Sky Watch and Fence
      Hugs,

  11. Dear Mariette,
Your Jasmine is beautiful! I can imagine this lovely bloom tucked behind an ear for a special occasion. I hope you get many more blooms to enjoy next year. We cannot keep Jasmine over the winter, but I have sometimes grown it as an annual when it is available. My very first dog, when we were newlyweds, was named Jasmine - a pretty Border Collie. Enjoy your weekend, my Dear!

We cannot keep them either over the winter, so all pots have to be brought inside the greenhouse.

  17. Dearest Mariette,
I just love the fragrance of the grandduka or fooli (φούλι) as we call it in Greece. I do have two very large pots just beneath my kitchen window and I enjoy the smell as soon as I open it in the morning. The plants have obviously found their best position there as they have become very tall and they behave as climbers. I have also taken cuttings from them which have produced roots in water and I am about to plant them in compost.
I will post a photo on your FB as soon as I am back home ( I am at my mother's today, like every Sunday).
    Lots of hugs to you!

So glad that you too enjoy this exotic jasmine. All jasmines are lovely for their fragrance and if they are healthy they can grow up strong and more vigorous.
So sweet of you that you go every Sunday to your Mother! We just called with Mom & Dad, using Pieter's new iPhone 4S. He did not want the newest versions... for what?

These are the best in the world! When we first worked for Pond's India, we received a welcome garland and it had sandal wood and jasmines... So heavenly; so we got hooked! Logee's sells tiny plants that need to be babied but it's worth it. We treasure these exotic tropical jasmines and this is such a rare double version!
