SECRETS of the Heart by D.S. Mullis

Do you BELIEVE in things happening for a reason?!
Certainly I DO...
Let me explain further...
SECRETS of the Heart by D.S. Mullis now also as Kindle version just click link!

A dear friend Ms. D. S. Mullis published her novel SECRETS of the Heart
Since I seldom have time for reading, I took it with me on a trip to our KIA garage for a check up.
Our KIA SOUL is the car for biking as the bike rack is permanently attached to it.

We bought this car and it came with only one key...
Too tricky for when one gets lost!
So we asked at the KIA dealer to provide us with an additional key.
Pieter came up to me with several key holders to make a choice from...
I saw it AT ONCE!
The RED HEART with SOUL was my choice.
Pieter laughed and said that is more than COINCIDENCE!

Great novel and even more so in the wake of our First Lady Melania Trump's BE BEST program!

Make you the world A bit better...

In our veranda we enjoy looking at our sun catcher with quote from Edward W. Bok that we purchased at the Bok Tower, highest point in Florida.
Just want to share it with you here:
Click to find it on my Pinterest in: QUOTES & WORDS OF WISDOM with info for ordering it from the Bok Tower Giftshop.
It is hanging to the right, next to another one from the Bok Tower.
Below my Hand Crocheted Fleur de Lys curtains...
A bit more close but still hard to actually catch it well, against the light!
Together with the Delftware houses we collected over the years from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines it looks great!
This is it, looking outside...

Wishing you a lovely day and thanks for your visit and comment!

1958 Tragedy for Pieter's Mushroom Friends in Zichen-Zussen-Bolder in Belgium

Those caves in the Limburg village of Zichen-Zussen-Bolder in Belgium, were again the result of sawing blocks of marl, or soft stone as it is also called, for building cities.
Also here, husband Pieter came for a frequent visit in Belgium, just across the Dutch border.
For his boss, Pieter Bels, my Pieter wrote a kind of a speech, in the summer of 1957.
Read more below first screenshot...
De Roosburgramp click for video from where I got this screenshot...
There were always quite some adventures in Belgium, especially when visiting Gérard Kinet. First they had bacon breakfast at Jacquemin. That was being generously served with cognac. It caused them having difficulty walking straight, between those mushroom beds inside the caves, with their trouser legs pushed up!
On December 23, 1958 harvesting went on inside the caves of Zichen-Zussen-Bolder in Belgium.
Prior to Christmas for having mushrooms available for special dinners...

Collapse of the quarry
It seems to be that one of the main reasons for such a disastrous collapse, was the gradual widening of underground corridors, plus taking away some support pillars.
The main reason for doing so, was because of transport equipment being able to pass.
It also was mentioned that the mine inspectors sometimes closed an eye...
Slowly mushroom growing had also shifted away from the one layer beds on the floor to stacked trays.
The difference can clearly be seen between the first and second image above.

Pieter's mushroom friend Gérard Kinet, as well as others he knew very well, were among the 18 that lost their lives...
Gerard's body was never found, only 7 got recovered.
Gerard's father-in-law Willem Heynen was heartbroken and the Bishop tried to console him as he'd lost his son Pierre, father of 7 children and his son-in-law Gérard Kinet, father of 2 children...

The Belgian disaster
Marked in blue from this Pdf: They are Pierre Heynen, Belgium's largest grower, and Gérard Kinet, Belgium's best grower.
Several Dutch mushroom growers knew them personally. Kinet participated in October in the excursion to England; we still vividly remember the pleasant and comradely relations with him. Several Dutch growers have visited his nursery and that of Pierre Heynen several times and learned a lot from them because they were so open and enjoyable to share their experiences. Both were generous hosts. (Photos Bartok)

Mrs. Kinet, is a sister from Pierre Heynen (DOUBLE TRAGEDY!).

Found in the Dutch publication of 1959 - 1 de Champignon - cultuur.

Found in the Dutch magazine of January/February 1959: de Champignon - cultuur.
That day, Pieter and his colleague went by car together with their boss Drs. P.J. Bels for attending the memorial service.

Below is from the November 1958 Dutch magazine: de Champignon - cultuur about photos from Gérard Kinet, when he went with Pieter and others to the UK.

Gérard Kinet is holding a pigeon... who could know then, that less than 2 months later these would seem to be his last photographs taken.
Husband Pieter was the 1st Assistant for the Dutch Proefstation (Experimental Station) and responsible for Training, he also was the main writer for their Dutch magazine from link above...
Pieter did drive to Maastricht where he gave his training courses at Restaurant Grandcafé  Momus - Vrijthof, Maastricht where also André Rieu gives his concerts... Famous spot in the South of my Province Limburg.
In this photo, taken in maybe Bournemouth where they went to the 2-day MGA exhibition and lectures, seated on the right is again Gerard Kinet (to the left of him is G.J.A. Van Soest who carried the large wreath, together with husband Pieter at Gérard's and others' funeral...)...
Just posted them here in case his relatives ever search for it.
My husband Pieter is standing to the left, without glasses at that time.
~
On December 31, they recovered the body of the youngest person and on February 17, that of a 21-year old...
On December 27, 1958 was the funeral for 5 of those that got recovered...
*
My Pieter is somewhere amongst the crowd, he went to their funeral carrying with his colleague the large wreath as seen here above.
Quite a tragedy!

May they all R.I.P.
Good to see that this post has been frequently visited...
Our archiving found a purpose.

Two Days London with Husband Pieter

On October 1, after the MGA Conference, we both got dropped off by friends at the Hilton London Gatwick Airport Hotel where we would spend two nights on our own.
Pieter had previously spent one summer at the University and knew London pretty well via the Underground!
The back entrance at the Hilton hotel brings you to the airport and to the train station, so off we went by 12:30 and saw Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus. Of course checked out shops as the Underground entrance is at Harrods... What a choice! Especially woolen goods, Burberry and porcelain...
We also saw the Tower, and St. Paul's Cathedral just before they closed!
We had a pizza and back to the hotel.... With a goulash soup at the Hilton we went to bed.
Sunday, October 2. We did sleep in and went by train now to South Kensington and visited two museums. The Victoria & Albert Museum was very impressive!
Also the Natural History Museum.
Here I stand next to the Natural History Museum South Kensington.
To the right you can see the tower from Victoria & Albert Museum.
We were so lucky with the weather!

Husband Pieter near Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, wearing his Burberry Polo Shirt...
Such perfect weather for walking in 1988, and what I noticed is that we could be on the stairs, close to the actual monument!
Pieter took a better photo of me, seeing the marble figures behind me...
Marble figure on corner of Albert Memorial click link.
Here you can clearly see that the area is protected and now people are being kept below the stairs.
What a lovely walk it was and now I also got to see the Royal Albert Hall, across from Albert Memorial.
Pieter had the 1980 MGA Conference Reception at Royal Alber Hall, see link below post.
*
We ended the day with a buffet dinner at the Hilton...
October 3, breakfast and packing in a relaxed way, no rush. At 12:45 we went back to Atlanta, this time in 9 hours! Strong head winds...
In 7 hours and 10 minutes we flew to London in a Jumbo 747 from Atlanta but now it took us 9 hours going back but with a DC-10.
That was the end of our Conference trip to Cambridge with before and after excursions!
A lovely time spent and now we could start packing up as only 16 days later, we would be moving to Pennsylvania...
Campbell's Soup made us move!

Thanks for your visit and comment!
Wishing you all a Happy Easter Weekend 🐇

Cambridge Conference and Newmarket Race Horses, England

On September 28, we arrived from Pullborough in Cambridge and started off with a lunch together as the Opening of this MGA Conference.
Always great for seeing friends from all over the world!
Ferd Hensby had opened up his mushroom farm for a farm walk.
We end up going back to the Royal Cambridge Hotel and low and behold, now we had each a twin bed!
Three years ago at the Cambridge MGA Conference we SHARED one twin bed!
We went for a walk and had a pizza in the city. It is cold, around frost that night!
On September 29, we had together breakfast at 7:00 and at 9:00 I departed by bus with the ladies program. Off to the studs of Newmarket...

Visiting Sir Michael Stoute and his stables.
In the same year during the Queen's birthday honors, on April 21, he had been knighted.
Equine Pool in Newmarket click on link
We also got to visit a lady who had a small equine pool, filled with 60,000 gallons of water and in the center an island.
Newmarket was an entire city, filled with horses!
Just as an example to show my readers how the straw from those stables always has been collected as an ingredient for the mushroom industry by e.g. Walkro
We had lunch and visited an Abbey but I have no info...
We ended the day with dinner-dance at the Swynford Paddocks Hotel and Restaurant.
Lovely evening...
SWYNFORD PADDOCKS HOTEL AND RESTAURANT is now: SWYNFORD MANOR click link to see more about this 17th century hotel.
September 30, we went together to the conference lectures at 9:00. Lunch and thereafter we visited the exposition.
Ruud Thielen from The Netherlands did hand me the Italian study books for my Italian Language course from NTI. He is the son of Jan Thielen and both I've mentioned: Visiting A.G. Linfield Mushroom Compost Facility in England just click link.
We both went shopping and I've found linnen/cotton damask napkins and a black angora beret.
We had dinner with Gerard Derks (who lived in Italy and had worked for the same company we were  planning to work for in Italy) and Huub Aarts who was part of the Dublin, Georgia Campbell Mushroom Plant's construction.

On October 1, we got a ride from Mike & Mary, who dropped us off at the Hilton London Gatwick Airport Hotel just click link.
Convenient hotel, as the airport or train station can be reached from their back entrance!
We left by train at 12:30 to London... stay tuned!

Thanks for your visit and comment!

From London by Train to Pullborough and Visiting Linfield Mushrooms

On September 25, 1988 we flew on British Airways, in 7 hours and 10 minutes to London.
We were again on our way to the next MGA Conference with some extra time spent visiting colleagues and friends.
September 26, arrival in London and we did take the train to Pulborough, West Sussex.
The Roundabout Hotel West Sussex click link
We arrived early at The Roundabout Hotel and by 10:30 went to Harold Linfield's mushroom farm and had lunch there.
The entire afternoon we spent with them at the mushroom farm.
By 17:00 back to the hotel and we ate at the restaurant of The Roundabout Hotel with Peter & Lydia Baker and Harold & Cecily Linfield.
By 23:00 we went to bed.
No jet lag problems and straight at arrival to work...
But nevertheless the bed felt GREAT!
On September 27, we first did go at 9:00 to the old Linfield mushroom farm to see the huge open breakfast mushrooms.
Due to the heavy spore count, they kept these open breakfast mushroom sheds far away from their regular growing rooms. Those spores 'could' carry the dreaded mushroom virus, so-called 'die-back disease'...
On the above photo I'm showing them to the viewer, wearing my silk Burberry plaid scarf and Burberry cotton sweater... Of course, honoring the British!
To the right is Mr. Harold Linfield.
I've done a harvest demonstration for them as well.
We also went to GCRI (Glasshouse Crops Research Institute in Littlehampton, West Sussex, where Pieter met with his colleagues. Always a worthwhile exchange of knowledge on both sides!
We had lunch at a local pub in Littlehampton.
We went back to our hotel by 16:00 and had a supper on our own.
September 28, we did ride with Mike and Mary Rowland to Cambridge where the MGA Conference would be held again.

Stay tuned...

Thanks for your vist and comment.

Cambridge MGA Conference in England

So we arrived at the old hotel The Royal Cambridge where we would be for three nights during the MGA Conference.
Botanical Gardens  * St. Johns College Chapel & Backs * King's College Chapel
King's Parade * Clare College from the Backs
Royal Cambridge Hotel where we checked in and then walked around in Cambridge...
Just click the link and for learning more about its ancient history, click on my comment.
We ended the day on a terrace while savoring a shared ice cream, big enough for two people!
Then we went to our twin bed... We were very close and laughed as we sure did not request this!
We walked next morning on Thursday, September 26, 1985 the 10 minutes to hotel Garden House where the Conference was being held.
The ladies started at 9:30 a College Tour on foot.
From above post card at the top right you can see King's College Chapel where we went for a tour.
Built in 1446 with the longest 180 meter nave within Europe and without pillars!
King's College Chapel (click on link) took over a century to build.
It might not be called a Cathedral but its grandeur sure measures up.
We had a coffee in King's College at 10:30 and we went back to Garden House Hotel for lunch at 12:30.
In the afternoon I went shopping with husband Pieter and found a gift for our sister-in-law.
We met with our Hungarian friend and many more from other countries.
Great first day till 23:00.
Next day I went with Pieter to the lectures at 9:15.
Lunch outside in the sun and with Pieter to the center, finding a new battery for Pieter's Rado watch.
Also found a knickerbocker for myself in green.
We had gotten a nice tip for taking a short cut to the hotel, through the meadow!
Queen's and King's Colleges, Cambridge...
After changing into long evening attire, we left for the Banquet at King's College.
It was a very formal and beautiful event!
It was my first time to be announced as GUEST together with Pieter, a ceremonial where the person in charge is holding a wooden staff (like a crosier but with a knob) and loudly calls out:
Mr. & Mrs Vedder...
By 23:30 we went back to our hotel, through the meadow...
Next morning after breakfast we packed up and checked out to go back to Gatwick and flying to Amsterdam for a short family and friends visit!

Thanks for your visit and comment.
