Delivering Funds to Dena Upakara in Wonosobo, Indonesia where Foster Daughter Anita hails from

On June 17 of 1995, we did hand deliver the donations from our local Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA
Delivering the Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA money to the Dena Upakara boarding school for girls with a hearing impediment.
Pieter handing the US $ 500.00 that we both hand carried to Indonesia when traveling for our consulting work.
A sure way for having 100% of the funds being delivered, and used for the cause!
Happy smiles!
We again delivered the US $ 500 from Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA on July 2, 1996.
Sister Antonie was very pleased with this gift!
Several of the girls from the boarding school were present as we came to deliver the funds.
Remember, that we used to have about 16 of these girls, come to our home while living and working in Indonesia.
We became their substitute Papa & Mama, as they only ONCE got to see their real Parents during their vacation, as most did not have the means for coming to Central Java to visit them.
On December 15, 1990, when living in Wonosobo we visited Dena Upakara and got to talk to Sister Henricia van Vijfeijke in Dutch!
Sister Henricia was from the Congregation Daughters of Mary and Joseph, who have a commitment to the deaf, blind and disabled. Founded in 1820 and they went to Brazil, Congo, China and Indonesia.
Surprise to us that she also happened to be a first cousin of Padre Juan Janssen who married us, in Chile; he sure blessed our blissful relationship!
We did present her after our work on December 18, with an article about her first cousin in Chile.
Small world!
Things happen for a reason...

We have our foster daughter Anita from this very boarding school!

  1. Hello Mariette, I know that the Rotary Club is involved in good deeds all over the world--I have seen their logo in Taiwan. I think it is good to become more directly involved in choices of charity and sometimes even personally volunteering to take part. Giving money to certain large umbrella organizations is important, but you are never sure specifically what your money is going towards, or, as you point out, if all of it even gets there. You and Pieter being able to travel to these schools and getting to know the people was indeed a special privilege.

    1. Dearest Jim,
There are many charitable organizations but often it is very little that will end up being used for the cause it was meant to aid. This was direct and it felt great for being able to do that. Sure we did get to know our Anita from this very boarding school and helped her in her further in her studies. She has been staying with us twice here in the USA when we were able to obtain a Visa for her.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. That must have been very satisfying to actually deliver the money to the girls school, and the boys school last post, in person Mariette. As you say sometimes monies raised for charity can get used up in other ways before it reaches it's specific destination. The Rotary Club is one of the better charity organisations I think ✨

    1. Dearest Grace,
Yes, it certainly was an honor for being able to carry the money and hand deliver. Knowing what it is used for made all the difference. Sure, a lot of charities are based on 'emotions' and make people give freely but it is often not being used for the specific cause!
We know from our daughter Anita how it is like for living at a boarding school. Even though she was able to attend regular high school as she was above average and very apt at reading lips. We were very proud of her!
Yes, the Rotary Club in general covers a lot of needs.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  6. Oh, what a feel-good post, Mariette. I imagine hand-delivering the donations really is the only way to be sure the money gets to the people who really need it, and not into someone else's pocket.

Gosh, what a small world indeed re: Sister Henricia! It must have been a delight for all three of you to speak Dutch. :-)

    Take care and keep well!

    1. Dearest Kim,
Yes, donations for a good cause often get side tracked and do end up in somebody's pocket or get written off as administrative cost or whatever... SAD!
The world so often proves to be small and there is no such thing as coincidence; things happen for a reason.
Speaking so unexpectedly Dutch was a big help indeed.
      Hugs,
