Editiorial Review from CEO Campbell Soup: You Brought a World-Renowned Professionalism to our Operations when they Sorely Needed Expertise

Final 'Mushroom' Editorial Review, that I used for our new book.
This is all said by others, and you can either hear them say it, or read their words.
No self-aggrandizement as we both loath that.
As Pieter always said: 'Let others figure out, how good you really are, no need for putting yourself on a pedestal'.
~
Sure, having to say goodbye to your employer is never easy, but if you do receive such a meaningful letter as a farewell, it is different.
From R. Gordon McGovern, President Campbell Soup Company:
Dear Pieter:
The announcement of your leaving for Italy could not pass by without my writing a note of thanks for your contribution to Campbell mushrooms.
You brought a world-renowned professionalism to our operations when they sorely needed expertise.
All of us here wish to express our appreciation and best wishes. We hope succeeding generations can live up to your standards.
Regards,
R. Gordon McGovern

This was sent to our apartment in Cornuda, Treviso/Italy where we then lived and worked.

  1. Hello Mariette, It is interesting how this testimonial shows the two-way street of employing expertise. Pieter spent his life in becoming the top mushroom expert, but in a vacuum this would have done little good. Mr. McGovern had the perspicacity to employ a top expert who could revamp an important aspect of his company. This is a surprisingly rare trait; today many experts are tired of being ignored and get their MBA's so they can take part in the "line" management of the company, and the "experts" so generously paid as consultants are usually more MBA's, not always people like you and Pieter with a lifetime of first-hand experience in a specialized field.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Guess you are right in this and we recognize the situation you are painting here. Mr. McGovern was also Pieter's best ally, guess he noticed Pieter, after they published his lecture at the North American Mushroom Conference in 1979, at the Fairmont in San Francisco.
Titles alone don't promise real expertise in a practical way!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  7. This is beyond touching for me as a reader and as a friend. Such recognition that came straight from the heart is truly touching and moving. You and Pieter have lived your life to the fullest, to the extent that it touched not just you lives but others as well, and even the next generation without them knowing much. Bless you hearts and souls :)
