Having Egyptian Feet I knew but I'm also 0.2% Broadly Sub–Saharan

Okay, we both fell for the DNA test and had one done...
We watched on Fox with the Five a program about their tests with 23andMe, so we ordered ours.
Since my skin is rather yellowish and my bones also fine, I was curious to know more.
Sending the material all in and waiting for their report.
This was the main part of my DNA 61.2% is French & German.
16.5% of my ancestry is British & Irish.
And, 6.2% of my ancestry is Scandinavian.
Even 0.3% is Spanish & Portuguese...
This is the total summed up by percentages.
On October 3, 2019 we paid for a test for both of us, the above sum of USD 172.95
On October 29, 2019 Pieter's DNA report was ready.
And on October 31, 2019 the above DNA report about me...
So, that's my DNA all MAPPED out.
Both of us were happy and felt good about this outcome for each of us (will post Pieter's later).
But 23andMe never left us alone, they kept pushing for more and more.
Maybe as a punishment (?) I did receive on March 4, 2021 some NEW percentages:
My DNA went up from 61.2% French & German to 93.6%...?
My British & Irish DNA just vanished...?
And my Scandinavian DNA went in only one-and-a-half year down from 6.2% to only 5.0%!
But WAIT:
Here comes the surprise, they must have viewed my post about me having Egyptian Feet (see link below post) and changed things.
All of a sudden I'm 0.2% Broadly Sub-Saharan African.
No longer 0.3% Spanish & Portuguese?

SO... our TRUST in 23andMe ended right there.
It has vanished, just as my 16.5% of British & Irish...
That's the END for any DNA

Have you had a similar experience?

  1. That's amazing. So, you say they searched your Blog and changed the DNA results accordingly? Do you recall anyone in your family telling you you had African relations in the distant past?

    God bless.

    1. Dearest Victor,
Haha, my Egyptian feet are the 'only' thing pointing into that direction.
Never ever heard of African relations and it sure doesn't look like that.
23andMe is not a bona fide case in our 'blue' eyes!

  2. I've been tempted to have mine done by one of the DNA companies, but since I know I'm eastern European on Dad's side and British on my Mom's, I've never bothered. I HAVE heard that the results can be iffy, though. I would take it more as entertainment, not as something definitive.

    1. Dearest Kim,
We both got tempted as well, wanting to find out some of our likes for certain music, food and so on. Ours turned out to be rather iffy indeed after they 'altered' their first, to us believable, results.
      Entertainment it sure is!

Per analizzare i piedi c'è meno strano perché hai fatti delle mummie di migliaia di anni...

  4. I've never bothered with that but one family member did some years back. We ended up locating a distant relative in California whom I knew about as a child while still in England, but she disappeared over the years. Now I've helped her with some ancestry details of my maternal side of the family which she's found fascinating.
23andMe does sound a bit iffy, and expensive!

Sorry I'm behind in comments dear Mariette - just have to say your house looks awesome with a new paint job all ready for springtime - it was worth waiting for I'm sure!

Two large camellia bushes here - I love their blooms though sadly many were killed off early by the snow/ice recently.

    1. Dearest Mary,
When I turned 50, my Dad presented me with the book about all of our Paternal ancestry till about 1650. That was fabulous for having. Funny though that my 4th cousin, the one that had put everything together for this book, had already contact with me. We found each other via social media. Don't have much on my Maternal side though.
Pieter also has part of it and it is always interesting to look back.
Indeed 23andMe seems to be iffy and all about the $$$.
Thank you and yes, we're very happy with the exterior finally having done.
Sad that you lost the Camellia bushes due to snow/ice.

  5. Hello Mariette, Those tests are problematic in many ways, including how they use the "results" including marketing and amassing data about you that could be used for who-knows-what fell purposes. Statistically the reports are a nightmare of poor logic. However, I suppose that if you are in the Sahara and start heading south, you would eventually reach Spain and Portugal again. Here is an article showing how you should take DNA tests with a grain of salt:

    1. Dearest Jim,
You are absolutely right in that and we never fell for their 'push' to continue into finding genetic health issues. No way, that does not make any sense.
You of course mean that going from the Sahara 'northbound', then you reach Spain and Portugal.
Also knowing history explains a lot about our DNA, we got occupied and ruled for 80 years by Spain... that no doubt left its mark. Before that it were the French.
      Thanks for the link.

    2. Hi again, Actually, in a kidding way I meant Southbound, that is, starting south from the Sahara and going all the way around the world. Going directly North would make Spain-Portugal super-Saharan. --Jim

  6. Isn't that really interesting! I have a test done by another company. I have Finland, Baltic and Inuit, -)) Hih hih, -) I will probably come more from my father's side. My brother is 100% Finnish. What’s really weird is we’re both from the same parents. My brother is on my father’s mother’s and mother’s father’s side.

Guess those companies are only after the money and what they do is by far not as accurate as they claim...

  8. The really special part of 23&Me is I have ‘met’ relatives I never knew existed! I am North Western European, 99.8% with a heavy French / German component. A bit of Scandinavian as well .. a great grandmother who died at a young age named Jessie Van Winkle. Isn’t that a great name. My great grandfather remarried shortly after her passing as the had two children (my maternal grandmother) who needed raising. He and his next wife proceeded to have ten more children!

    1. Dearest Helen,
Sure, if you live over two continents, that is very interesting to find!
Your great grandmother's name sounds pure Dutch! Jessie Van Winkel (instead of Winkle, I presume).
It amazes us nowadays how those women managed to raise such large families, without any of the conveniences we have at present!

  9. I have always been apprehensive about the veracity of these tests, although I am very curious about my acentrality. As far as I can tell by direct report, my ancestors are from regions of the center of Portugal above the river Tejo, both by the paternal and maternal line.
Many different peoples passed through Portugal. The northern half (more or less up to the river Tejo) was populated by people from northern Europe and later by the Romans who spread their stay to the south. To the south, Muslim invasions took place, but in some cases they were partially peaceful and maintained some populations without miscegenation. Well, it's a topic that interests me a lot.

    1. Dearest Christina,
Well, as I already replied to Mary here above, I received the Paternal ancestry book from 1650 but still one wonders. Sure, with the initial conclusion of 0.3% Spanish & Portuguese, that is quite possible due to the 80 year Spanish war.
Also the Normans came in the very beginning and no doubt left their 'genetic' marks.
French occupation and German shifts in borders and so on.
Like you already mentioned, over the ages, certain parts of Europe and elsewhere have been ruled or conquered by different groups.
I've always wanted to be able to go back in history and 'see' how our ancestors lived...
