This is a replica from my original bridal handkerchief. It got stolen when I once gave classes at the Teaching Museum in Hapeville, Georgia where I also had several pieces of my lace work on display for: "THREADS OF LIFE: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S TEXTILE ART" for Georgia State University.
Not a pleasant experience, especially for such a sentimental piece of work... But I did have the Burda pattern and made one again. Over the years I've done several bridal handkerchiefs for loved ones. A labor of love one might say. Very fine DMC thread and a thin crochet needle is being used for this type of lace work.
Do you like it?
Somebody else must have liked the original too, as it was snatched from the table where I had my display during my day of classes... Below this post you find a link, you just scroll down to: "THREADS OF LIFE: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S TEXTILE ART"
Georgia State University
Showing you a better closeup view.
With of course an added Gardenia blossom and some perfect pink rosebuds in a French Baccarat perfume bottle.
Roses, Gardenia and Lace make up for some very romantic items...
These lovely home grown roses are in a French crystal Baccarat perfume bottle.
This is the Burda pattern, the number 307/54 is the one I made...

it is really beautiful. i'm sorry someone stole your original!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. I have always and ever adored hand crocheted and hand embroidered beautifully crafted pieces. I make them myself..or rather to say I DID do so, and I haven't the patience just now to do it again BUT I have what I did and I will purchase some others at estate sales.
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful, Mariette. xox
I am sorry. I am still in my cat's blog and did not switch to my own. This is Ramblingon..friend of Michiko.

abraços de MF
it's beautiful!!!!!!!!! a big kiss Lory
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more with Elizabeth- " jeder Besuch bei dir ist ein Gewinn.".I remember the story about the theft of your handkerchief- I feel sorry for people who think they need to do this..how can you possibly enjoy something so beautiful if you know you got it through depriving someone of the things they love and are proud of...thankfully you had the skill to redo this - but obviously the sentimental connotation has gone and it will always hurt - a bit .And so undeserved- as you are such a giving person !!!Just reminds me a bit of the time I made a beautiful Christmas wreath and someone stole it from my front door - so shocking !!!
ReplyDeleteThe detail on your handkerchief is amazing! Very dainty and beautiful. When I was little, in England, getting a box of "hankies" was always one of my favorite things to receive at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHow horrible that someone felt they had the right to steal the original, I can't even imagine...no conscience at all!
Dear Mariette, this is so, so precious, so lovely! I admire your skill!
Besos.
ReplyDeleteCome è importante questo fazzolettino!E'molto bello!Baci,Rosetta
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful, Mariette. It doesn't replace in sentiment and history what was stolen; so sorry that such a person showed up at your table that day. It's lovely and a fabulous talent and skill you have.
ReplyDeleteThere really are some light fingered sad types in the world....so sorry your wedding handkerchief was stolen. The current one is lovely, thanks for sharing. PS My mother crochets and has lots of crocheted edge hankies. She made 8 for my daughter's wedding party and also embroidered the intitials in each corner. They were beautiful. I posted about them a few weeks back if you would like to look at my blog.

Awful that someone thought it was okay to walk away with your lovely lace handkerchief. A shame that the pieces weren't displayed in a way where that couldn't happen. As you said, you learned a lot from the experience. At least you were able to replicate the piece. Hope you are having a good day. Tammy
ReplyDeleteDearest Mariette, You never cease to amaze me. Had I tried to make such and intricately beautiful handkerchief, I would have pulled out all my hair. This is such detailed work and you have executed it beautifully. I am in awe of your talent.
ReplyDeleteI would like to take hold of the dirty, rotten thief who stole you heirloom. I just can't understand people. Who could enjoy something they know is stolen and that meant so much to the original owner. I know I am railing on but it just makes me so angry. I am happy that you could reproduce the lovely handkerchief and it IS most beautiful.
Love to you and Pieter,
Ginger
Hi Mariette,
ReplyDeleteYou do beautiful work :) I love it!
Dee
Hello my dear friend, Mariette,
ReplyDeleteYour bridal handkerchief is so beautiful, but it is a shame somebody stole the original one, I guess that was a very sad experience for you. But as a talented woman as you are, you could make a copy of that, and that is a treasure for you.
Send you a huge hug,
Con cariño, Laura :0)
Hi Mariette,
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness this is beautiful and every stitch is so perfect. Such a lovely gift made with so much love. You needle work is amazing!
Have a sweet day,
Elizabeth
Hei Mariette,
Groetjes Sandy
