Lacquered Polypore Ganoderma lucidum

Already on June 26, 2017 my Pieter found this perfect 'Lakzwam' is Dutch for Lacquered Polypore Ganoderma lucidum
It indeed looks like lacquered!
Showing its polypore on the underside
Looks really freshly lacquered!
A perfect species for some good photos.

Perfect Marasmius sp.

On May 16, did find this perfect and rather large Marasmius sp. on our lawn when I went early morning to feed the birds.
Such a perfect one!
Holding my finger next to this Marasmius sp. so you get an idea about its size.

Common Stinkhorn or Phallus impudicus in Our Garden

On December 11 of 2022, husband Pieter made some perfect photos from the Common Stinkhorn or Phallus impudicus in Our Garden...
After lower temperatures and some rainy days, mushrooms show up in meadows, woody areas and also in our backyard. In the past we have shown you already different species.
Here is a not so common one: Phallus impudicus or stinkhorn.
The name is suggesting that it is looking somewhat like a male part.
This is a perfect example and also showing one bulbous egg—its beginning stage.
Here you can see an excellent video, click it→ Phallus impudicus, Documentary, Time lapse
You clearly see how this Stinkhorn is supposed to attract flies and LOTS of them.
They come and lick up its spores and that way they get disposed somewhere else.
Pieter carefully removed one just to show its bulbous egg from which it grew.
Are they edible?
You wouldn't even try—because they produce a strong, cadaver like smell.
The purpose of that is to attract flies to their slimy top, to spread their spores.
The fruit bodies evolve from an egg–like bulbous.
Showing some more bulbous eggs.
ONLY in this stage they are edible!

AND—Pieter did bring a mature one inside to let me smell it!
NO, by no means it did compare to my favorite La Perla In Rosa Eau de Toilette spray...

Have you ever smelled one?!

Turkey Tail

On November 19, I've captured these photos of the Turkey Tail growing on decomposing wood in our garden.

Lovely Turkey Tail growing on this piece of wood.
Over the past couple of years we have had to cut down quite some trees and this is how toadstools naturally decompose the wood.
A better closeup picture...

Our Autumn Garden Blooms & HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The 2022 Autumn has been very brief...
On October 9, our Hydrangea paniculata, Limelight still blooming like it would not end!
More in detail with perfect sunlight.
This was already blooming on September 8—the longest lasting blooms we've ever seen!
Check post below about 'Our Garden Blooms in Summer
On October 21, Pieter did bring in a giant red Hibiscus bloom.
Placed it in our Repoussé Silver Rose vase...
Showing here its proportion a little better...
On October 30 when we left for North Carolina and Tennessee it was very dark and drizzling so I could not capture our Sugar Maple.
Photo got taken on November 4, day after our return and as you see—most leaves are already down and not even turned completely golden yet.
Pieter's open hand gives you a good idea about the size of yet another red Hibiscus bloom on November 7.
Love this red Hibiscus with its very special center.
A detail of its fabulous center—too bad our hummingbirds are already gone to the Caribbean.
Not the best photo taken on November 13—that late into the season.
But what I wanted to show here is that these petunias, the Blanket® Double Chardonnay in our Fiberglass Window Boxes remained like miniature plants...
Very disappointing!
GrowJoy claims that one plant grows to mature size of 10–inches tall x 24–inches wide or
25 cm x 60 cm.
Our plants sure did NOT do that, they remained very miniature as you can see by my hand as comparison.
In post below you can see them also
On November 19, our Hydrangea paniculata Limelight had turned pinkish from some near frost nights...
There were more buds but they did not turn out the way the first two did!
On our patio the summer blooming azalea still performs well as a pot plant!
Another great performer on the patio as a pot plant is the Rosemary—they bloom year round!
On Sunday, November 20 I captured our regal Camellia Japonica Debutante.
You can clearly see the now raised wooden walkway that Pieter finished in June while I was in Europe solo...
Holding one regal Camellia Japonica Debutante in my hand...
Mariette's Back to Basics wishes you and your loved ones a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Coprinellus disseminatus in our Garden

On August 29, the day of our 39th anniversary as an immigrant, Pieter spotted these very special mushrooms in our garden, under our Magnolia Grandiflora.
Coprinellus disseminatus.
Beautiful Coprinellus disseminatus...
Pieter, being a true teacher, placed a US penny next to some of the fruit bodies to show how tiny they are!
Not a clean penny but you still manage to read: IN GOD WE TRUST...
Here they are, growing on the decaying roots of some of the Magnolia Grandifolia shoots that had come up under the big tree.
It was only because of August being like a WET MONSOON...
Perfect climate for any mushroom to develop!

Have you ever seen this variety?

Pieter Found Another Death Cap or Amanita phalloides

Yes, from our own garden once again...
A perfect Death Cap or Amanita phalloides, the alba species and it is recognizable by its bulbous root.
DON'T eat it!
Pieter has its milk on his fingers... he did not lick that off either.
Pieter found this perfect example on October 5, 2021 but through all kinds of other posts, this got never used. But here it is!
Once again, don't attempt to consume this one!
Pieter was wearing his Burberry poloshirt
These images show the bulbous kind of 'egg' very clearly.
Photos from Pieter's Mushroom collection that he used for training.
Again, different stages of maturity
At times they even can appear to be greenish.
Nice combination with the clover leaves.
Again a different shade but all are deadly poisonous and cause organ failure and DEATH.
Never ever eat any of those!

Toadstools or Mushrooms Digesting the Wood - Turkey tail

After cutting down trees, we both prefer to let the wood naturally decompose in our wood garden.
Husband Pieter took these photos of such an old tree being decomposed on December 4, 2021.
What you see in these photos are Turkey tail or Trametes versicolor.
Another perfect example of how mushrooms digest lignin and cellulose in nature.
Everything in nature has its function and so the cycle of life gets closed.
Do you have any variety of mushrooms in your garden?

Honey Mushrooms or Armillaria Mellea Recipe

Of course we do see lots of mushrooms in our garden!
Honey Mushrooms or Armillaria mellea in our garden.
Showing also the underside with its lamellae.
There used to be some trees on our front lawn...
Still the roots are below the lawn and that's where toadstools love to grow, as they need some cellulose and lignin for food.
Love their fragrance when the Honey Mushrooms are fresh and good quality!
Next morning I did collect some for preparing a Honey Mushroom risotto...
Maybe they were even better yesterday? Their caps have a little curled up now.
Pieter did gather the other cluster and I've already boiled them, will freeze those for later usage!
Still looking very fresh and good!
Showing you a good detail of their stem.
For preparing in a dish, we ONLY use the caps!
They have to get boiled for about 3 minutes and then drained.
Using one of my baskets, for gathering fresh food.
Here it is, except for the melon in the back... 😏
Those are all the fresh ingredients needed.
Oh, a great tip I once read is to keep pine nuts in the freezer to keep them from going rancid.
After trimming off the Honey Mushroom stems, add water and boil for 3 minutes.
Then pour into strainer to drain and cut into smaller pieces, set aside.
In a non-stick pan over medium heat do dry roast the pine nuts.
Set aside.
For the entire bag of 454 g of arborio rice, I use a bit over 2 pints of water to boil with just one Porcini tablet. If not available, you can substitute with vegetable bouillon.
Chop the two onions, cut the Italian parsley for having it ready towards the end.
You add enough olive oil into a large enough non-stick skillet for stir frying the two onions.
Add the arborio rice and stir till the rice has been fully covered.
Then pour half of the small bottle of white wine over it, while stirring.
Start adding the hot bouillon and keep stirring.
It will take about 20 minutes in total preparation time.
When most of the liquid has been absorbed, add the pine nuts, the Italian parsley and the Honey mushrooms and stir again till all liquid is fully absorbed.
We ate ours with baby arugula with a bit of Agave nectar whisked into white Modena vinegar (Trader Joe's) as dressing.
We dusted the risotto with Trader Joe's Pecorino Romano & Parmesan blend grated cheese with only 2% cholesterol and fat. Sodium is low too with only 3%. See FRESH Made Pasta Sauce below with image.
Husband Pieter liked it very much and so did I; will prepare it more often!
In this photo there is no grated cheese added as I wanted to show the other ingredients clearly... 😉

Hope you find yourself some Honey Mushrooms...
