On March 14, Pieter did plant our first ever EUCALYPTUS tree! Love the smell of Eucalyptus and we found it a very special tree, while we were working as consultants in Australia. Also on the West Coast, in California those Eucalyptus trees grow naturally. But when we went with our best friend to a nursery in South Georgia, in Baxley, we did bring one back home with us.
Don't you just love the smell of EUCALYPTUS leaves?
It seems to be even a great flea repellent in the yard. So, we wonder if our chipmunks and squirrels will get to live as flea free, as our felines, whom we treat with Revolution...
This is the tree on July 13, 2012.
Four months of growing UP in our garden.
On this very tree was that CICADA from my previous post...
Just planted on March 14...
Azaleas still blooming at that time.
March 18, Eucalyptus settled into its yummy food mixture of: potting soil; cow manure and mushroom compost.
It has been broadly smiling ever since!
Our EUCALYPTUS after 4 months; it doubled in size!

Love to have something with grayish leaves during winter season!
No doubt, it has many examples of mature trees around it.
You see the newest bridge over the creek into the wood garden.
To the right you just see a strip where the road is...
So, do you use cow manure and compost too?

Dear Mariette, your little tree is growing with all the love and attention from you and Pieter! It will be so pretty and so nice to have little sprigs now and again to scent your home. Also, to catch the scent on the breeze as you walk over the little bridge to your woodlands must be wonderful.

Hoi lieve Mariette,
ReplyDeleteJa, eucalyptusbomen groeien zeer snel,ik zag ze in Portugal veel van enorme hoogte, maar ik weet ook dat er veel verschillende soorten zijn.
De Eucalyptus globulus met spitse bladeren en vruchtdoosjes waar in het voorjaar de witte bloemen uitspringen.
Ik nam 11 jaar geleden wat van die grijs/blauwe vruchtjes mee naar huis als souvenir,het was allemaal te vinden aan de takken en op de grond rondom de bomen,wanneer ik nu(heb ze even voor me liggen)de vruchtjes waar het hoedje nog op zit door mijn hand wrijf reuk ik na al die jaren nog de heerlijke Eucalyptus geur.
Zit me nu af te vragen of de geur en medicinale werking van kajapoeti olie die ik nog menig keer gebruik na mijn kennismaking daarmee in Indonesië ook van deze boom met haar werkzame stoffen komt,of dat die essentiële olie weer uit een ander soort plant/boom gewonnen wordt.
Rond de Kerstdagen vind ik 'n grote bos met Eucalyptus in huis ook zo sfeervol staan en bovendien ruikt het lekker.

Jullie boom is ontzettend gegroeid Mariette. Dat komt vast door de goede verzorging en het juiste klimaat! Ik vraag mij af of Eucalytus boompjes bij ons net zo goed zouden groeien.

Dearest Mariette, I love this tree and the fragrance fro the leaves. We had on when we lived in the city. For some reason we didn't plant one here. You make me wish we had planted one long ago. I would bring cuttings inside for drying in a vase.

Oh ja de geur vind ik heerlijk! Wij hadden ook zo'n boom in de tuin, ze worden heel hoog. Hij sloeg toch niet helemaal goed aan door de winter. Het is echt een mediterrane boom.En in Australië heb je ze ook heel veel.

I have never seen a cicada, either. However, I heard them when I was on holiday in the Mediterranean countries.

ReplyDeleteich hatte auch einmal ein solch schönes Bäumchen im Garten - leider hat es nur ein Jahr gehalten - der Frost hat es beschädigt -
ich mag auch die Farbe der Blätter sehr - man kann sie übrigens wunderbar trocknen und in Gestecken verwenden -

ReplyDeletedas wäre ja eine tolle Nebenwirkung, wenn die Tiere in der Nähe des Baumes alle ungezieferfrei wären. Ich finde das sehr schöne und interessante Bäume. Sie werden ja riesig. Und auch die Früchte sind in der Blumenbinderei gut einzusetzen.
