Pearl Harbor Hawaii

On November 27, 1998 we both flew on Delta Airlines to Oahu, Hawaii.
Will show more later about that part...
On December 2, we were ready to go on the bus for E NOA Pearl Harbor Tours by 8:45 AM.
A very interesting tour with a movie of December 7, 1941.
We went with a Navy boat to the USS Arizona Memorial which is placed on top of the sunken wreckage.
Over 1,100 names on the wall; all from this ship.
The captain's name was Franklin Van Valkenburgh (a Dutch name!)...
Also a Father and his Son...
Many Brothers...
A chilling experience to stand there!
The USS Arizona Memorial is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Every American ought to visit here...
It is mind boggling to read the history...
The Visitor Center is open every day from 7:30 A.M. to 5 P.M.
Only on Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day it is closed.
Day of Infamy... 7 December 1941
USS Arizona as she appeared before destruction, December 7, 1941.
May PEACE prevail as this is so devastating...

Has any of you ever visited the USS Arizona Memorial in Oahu, Hawaii?

  3. When think of Hawaii I am happy. It is a beautiful tropical island I would like to visit someday.
About Perl Harbor, I think of a sad history of a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor by Japan. Your new header is beautiful!Christmas has come to your place!
    Have a good weekend!

    1. Dearest Tomoko,
At the time we were staying at the Hyatt Regency, we were there with mainly Japanese visitors.
It is closer to Japan than it is to us here in Georgia!
We love the tropical paradise too but it is so far away...
The sad history is something we all ought to learn from.
Thank you for your compliment about my header!
      Hugs,

  4. Hello Mariette, I have never been to Hawaii, but this will be at the top of the list when I get there. The Pearl Harbor attack was terrible, but we have seen how wounds can heal and now the U.S. and Japan have a solid friendship. I hope that all our current political traumas can end this well.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Surprised that you never ended up being in Hawaii, even for traveling en-route to your destination.
Historically this is a great place for learning first hand about history.
Glad that tragedy turned into great friendships between the U.S. and Japan and let's hope that more nations will follow that example!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  6. Liebe Mariette,

  9. Hello dear Mariette,
Let's hope wars will be a thing of the past one day, unfortunately some countries make a business of being in war, it is horrendous.
I feel happier spending my time watching animals live in the wild although most of them are dramatically endangered thanks tu us... What a cancer we are for our planet...
Anyhow, warm hugs and enjoy the coming week :)

You are so very right about looking at wild live, even if we have to face species becoming extinct due to human interference.

  10. Went on family vacation to Hawaii in 1980 but don't think we visited the memorial. I remember doing a lot of hiking. My mom always planned what we would do on vacation whether we liked it or not. :) Now I appreciate it all, but sure didn't back then. I will never understand why humans cannot evolve to a place of peace rather than wanting to fight and kill each other.

    1. Dearest Tammy,
That no doubt must have been a fabulous experience to go to Hawaii, regardless your Mom's ruling in what to see and not to see or do. Yeah, bridging the generation gap is not always easy but with age we all appreciate things more.
May there one day be more Peace in this World! We never will be able to grasp the 'why'...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Yes, very moving in a sad and somber way. But we cannot forget that part of history and all those that perished.
These weeks up to Christmas always pass by so FAST!
Happy Advent to you as well,
      Mariette
