October 24, 2012 is again World Polio Day ←(click it). In our lives there have been three persons we worked with, that had Polio.
Our boss in Italy had Polio as a young boy, but he grew
out of it and managed a normal life.
In Mernda, Victoria in Australia at one of
the Campbell Soup mushroom plants, I worked with Tony, the harvest manager, in
June of 1988 and he walked still on crutches, however FAST! It amazed me how
driven this young man was and he had a great work ethic, despite him having had
polio and never completely getting out of it. I certainly did admire his
dedication.
Let me now introduce you again to John H.G. Soe from
Jakarta, Indonesia with his incredible Polio related story... ‘Nobody’s child,
everybody’s man’ as published in the Jakarta Post ←(click it). You will find the link of last year's blog-post about him, below this post. You also can click on the hyperlink above, but if you need to use a translator, that will not work... so for that you better read my post below.
http://www.endpolio.org/ Both of us are proud of what Rotary has done so far. Husband Pieter is a Rotarian since 36 years and he was the President of the Dutch Rotary Club of Venray, in 1978. Do you have anyone that suffered Polio? |

ReplyDeleteDearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteReally great , what Rotary has done in all the years!
I am lucky, that nobody arround me and my family had polio.
Have a wonderful week,
love and hugs,

Liebe Mariette,
Proge's Godfather had severe polio as a child. He lived a good life, but died due to adult complications from the childhood polio. I grew up in era when schools were closed during polio epidemics. It's hard to remember when we live in such safety from disease that it still affects other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteKudoes to Pieter for all the fine work he and the Rotarians have done!
Liebe Mariette,
ReplyDeleteich kenne auch Menschen, die von der Kinderlähmung betroffen sind.
Sonnige Grüße
Elisabeth
One of my good friends in New Orleans had polio as a child that caused both of her legs to be quite deformed. She uses special crutches to get around, drives her own car and has never let her deformity stop her in any way. My BIL also has one leg and foot that are deformed because of the disease. He has a special shoe with brace that he wears daily. Best wishes to you and Pieter. Tammy
ReplyDeleteDearest Mariette
ReplyDeleteAmazing that you can eradicate such a horrible disease by vaccination. In Sweden we started to vaccinate children in the middle of the 1950s. Then polio disappeared completely in about 10 years.
Hugs to you
Kajsa
Anna
