For Healthy Living we love to shop at Trader Joe's and that's how I found these Shaved Brussels Sprouts & Tofu with Tri Color Quinoa.
Brussels Sprouts are a favorite vegetable for both of us.
My Dad used to grow them commercially and so did Pieter's Dad, thus we grew up with them.
But that they now are being offered 'SHAVED' that was new!
High Protein Super Firm Tofu for dicing up and ready to go.
Of course, having lived and worked in Indonesia, we are so used to a Tofu rich diet and we love it!
Either in soups or other dishes.
Japanese food also uses lots of tofu and fermented tofu.
In Indonesia we call the fermented tofu, tempeh.
That too we can buy at Trader Joe's!
Wish my Parents could have seen this product; they would be amazed.
Using Olive Oil, I did first stir-fry some garlic, than the diced tofu and adding the shaved brussels sprouts.
You can use some oriental spices of your liking or add some sauce.
For a quick and healthy meal I did add tri-colored Quinoa from Trader Joe's and that was it!

Hello Mariette, I have never heard of shaved brussels sprouts. They look good, but one of the things that I like best about the sprouts is their amazing layered texture. My mother often steams them, and then fries them briefly in buttered breadcrumbs.
ReplyDeleteTofu and soybeans are prohibited to me, which you can imagine makes it difficult having to turn down all the incredible tofu dishes here. Some of my favorites are tofu with pi-dan (preserved duck eggs), and dried tofu, which is a jerky-like snack food, but I am limited to small tastes.

DeleteOh, those shaved brussels sprouts were quite a surprise to us as well but it's a great product. You are right about their very firm, layered texture as that's so typical for brussels sprouts. Your Mother's recipe sounds really yummy too.
Too bad you cannot take tofu or any soybean products for that matter. Living in the far east makes it difficult. We miss that kind of food from the three years of living in Indonesia. Tempeh was often used and we liked it very much.
We know the Indonesian marbled eggs or spiced hard boiled eggs.

DeleteOh no, this is NOT my Mom's recipe... She has never even seen shaved brussels sprouts and neither quinoa. My Parents grew commercial brussels sprouts, so did Pieter's Parents. And I wish they could see such a great new product that is so convenient for preparing a quick supper.

I've never seen shaved brussels sprouts before. Usually we find the ones without being cut or shaved. I love tofu! I love both soft and firm tofu. That firm tofu looks perfect for stir-frying. Your dish looks so yummy! And very healthy, too!

DeleteTrying to help you with 'spruitjes' which is the Dutch name and in Romaji it is mekyabetsu or in traditional Japanese メキャベツ
Our Japanese friend who buys vegetables for the local school in Japan goes to market very early in the morning. He did make photos for me from all Japanese vegetables, fruits and mushrooms in July. But since mekabetsu is available in March, it was not included. But you DO have it in Japan!
For sure the USA is importing it from the southern hemisphere when it is off season for growing it here. In The Netherlands our Parents always grew it in the cooler season of the fall and winter.

But todays a raining for all days maybe I can eat for only Tofu?

Ik heb nog nooit gesneden spruitjes gezien. Hier eten we ze altijd als heel spruitje. Tofu kennen we hier inderdaad ook en wordt nog steeds veel gegeten.

ReplyDeleteHet is niet alleen lekker maar ook nog eens heel gemakkelijk die geschaafde spruiten.
Bij ons zijn spruiten alleen in de wintermaanden verkrijgbaar(wel uit diepvries,maar die blief ik niet)
Zodra wij het dorp van onze kinderen inrijden en ik zie die velden vol rijen met spruiten staan komt bij mij het water al in de mond lopen.
Wij eten vaak spruiten en ik bereid ze op vele manieren,kort gekookt zoals onze moeder en oma's het deden opgeschud met klontje boter en wat nootmuskaat van de rasp,ik roerbak ze ook graag,of schaaf ze zelf heel fijn en eet ze rauw in salade met lichte vinaigrette,pocorino kaas en gehakte hazelnoten.
Van tofu ben ik niet een echte liefhebber.En Quinoa is heerlijk,plus een goed alternatief voor mensen die geen gluten verdragen, want zoals jij wel zal weten is dat geen graansoort.
Kom ook net uit de keuken vandaan,zoonlief en schoondochter werden vanmiddag door Harry van Brussel Airport opgehaald,ze verbleven twee weken in Bilbao,Sant Sebastian en Zaragoza deden daar alles met gereserveerde treinplaatsen,de appel valt niet ver van de boom, ze houden ook van lekker eten en kwamen in Spanje wel aan hun trekken in de vele,vele pinchos restaurantjes.
Maar Thaise schoondochter was maar wat blij verrast toen er hier vanavond Laab Moo op het menu stond met rijst,pittige boontjes,verse ananas en komkommer in zoet-zuur.
Ben blij dat weer alles aan kant is want het was warm in de keuken vandaag bij 32 graden,zit nou even bij ventilator af te koelen.

Wij hebben het geluk dat spruitjes hier het hele jaar door verkrijgbaar zijn; VERS! Ze komen ook van Zuid Amerika natuurlijk, dat is toch makkelijk tegenwoordig met vracht. Ook frambozen, bramen, bosbessen en aarbeien krijg je hier het hele jaar door. Wat dat betreft wonen we erg goed.
Fijn Pinkserweekend nog en rust lekker uit!
