Borobudur Largest Buddhist Temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Borobudur Temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991

We did visit CANDI: BOROBUDUR
Quite a walking distance away... you can see the huge stupa in the top of the photo, a bit to the left from center.
Weather is always tricky in the tropics, soon enough clouds cover it all and a tropical rain shower surprises you!
On December 14, 1986 we were walking towards this enormous Borobudur Temple and soon figured out why it is the largest in the world.
Notice my small foldable umbrella next to my hip?
Pardon my poor photo...  Pieter standing in front of these 9th Century carvings.
Standing with umbrella in hand...
This was still five years before it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site
One more time we went there, on June 1 of 2001, our final trip to work in Indonesia and we had our best friends tagging along with us.
We had nice weather and a good tour guide, she was very knowledgeable but we only have video from that time, no photos.
Hoping this still did give you some insight in one of the many wonders that can be seen within Indonesia.

  1. What a great site to have visited! I've never heard of it before but it looks impressive in the video and so nice you have these photos :)

Hope that you are having a good week! It's been a very rainy one so far here!

  2. Amazing, Mariette. I wonder what is being done to preserve it for generations to come. I would think that heritage sites would take A LOT of ongoing upkeep.

    1. Dearest Kim,
Like the previous post's Prambanan Hindu temple, that too became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its upkeep will demand a lot of money and effort.
But it is so impressive and that being done already in the 9th century is mind boggling!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  3. Hello Mariette, This is a really mind-boggling site. I suppose that to take it in entirely must take weeks. Like so many vast sites and museums, one has to make the best of one's time.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Yes, it is good that we have been there a few times over the years and it is so vast indeed. We did have a very knowledgeable female guide when we videotaped our visit with best friends. That was in June of 2001, our final of 23 visits (for me, more for Pieter!) to Indonesia.
A beautiful country with such a rich history!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  10. Hallo Mariette, indrukwekkende plek en mooi om daar geweest te zijn. Ik zie dat je daar in korte broek gekleed was, waren er geen kledingvoorschriften voor het bezoek aan een tempel? Of kon je daar iets huren? Fijne dag, lieve groet Willy

    1. Beste Willy,

    1. Dearest Janey,
Guess for most there is no connection with this vast country but since for some 350 years it belonged to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we all studied it in history. So many relatives were there in service, also my best friend’s Dad. And my Great Uncle ‘Heeroom’ spent decennia there. We have our foster daughter Anita there... It is in our heart and once was home!
      Hugs,
      Mariette
