Found one of our bats on the driveway and it recovered!

On May 31, I found a bat on the driveway and I picked it up.
So soft with brownish fur...
It was around 20:00 o'clock and I had dipped my finger in the cat's water bowl, for letting it drink.
No idea if they drink or what the cause of it laying on the driveway was....
It was so tiny inside my hand and it reacted to my calling and talking.
I took it upstairs, and then onto the balcony, no kitties there!
It was so very special for being able to video tape it in daylight and it seemed okay.
I was checking if it had a tail... and noticed its big ears.
Such soft fur!
Calling it Vleery Vedder (Vleermuis is the Dutch word for Bat).
They are oh so tiny, these little brown bats but ferocious mosquito and other insect hunters.
Vleery, looking at me from the top of the teak table on our balcony.
And yes, a little while later it was gone!
So for whatever reason it was down on the driveway; maybe dizzy...
Glad it got revived.

  1. Well, it's kind of cute ... you are much braver than me. I could not have even picked him up, would have needed help!

This is a cute and very soft furry mammal. They are so beneficial to us.

  2. You are so brave to have picked it up. I would not have touched it. Perhaps moved it to a safe place in the bushes. Bats are good at hunting insects. Great photos and videos.

    God bless, Mariette.

    1. Dearest Victor,
Nothing brave about it and knowing that our five kitties are around, I acted very swift.
Bats don't live in the bushes but need to dive from an elevated spot to catch insects...
Thanks for your compliment about the photos and videos.
      Hugs,

  3. I'm so glad you found it and it was okay! I like bats, fierce though they look, but I wouldn't want one in my house. LOL. (I have a co-worker who finds bats in his condo from time to time.)

    1. Dearest Kim,
Well, when parting with friends one time, a bat must have come inside through the front door... We opened up the doors and it escaped. One time though when cleaning the dining room, there was one underneath the oak wall unit for the china. It had died there, so sad! So yes, they can come inside when doors or windows are open and they're hunting some insects.
But this was a happy ending!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  4. How courageous of you to pick that bat up! He is cute, I'll have to give him that, and I'm so glad he recovered.

Don't know if it was a he or a she, that's why I wrote just 'it'...
But what do we have to fear from such a little mammal in distress for whatever reason?
So glad it got saved and flew off again.
      Hugs,

Not during the day, this was at 20:00 o'clock... So I found it in time for being rescued and then flying off to actually catch insects.

  7. Hello Mariette, I know that you are not afraid of bats, but I still would not pick it up directly. Bats can carry rabies, and undergoing the rabies treatment is definitely no fun. Still, I am glad that all turned out ok and you were able to return it to mosquito-eating duties.

You are correct in that but I had to act swift for scooping it up before one of our five kitties would get ahead of me.
      It was a happy ending.

  9. Hello Mariette, You are brave and caring to make sure the cats didn't get the bat. I would have been scared to pick it up. I wonder if it was sick. I had series of rabies shots after trying to shoo a dog out of the hi way so I could get by so it wouldn't get hurt. It broke my skin when it nipped. I couldn't find the dog to see if it was o.k. Never ever will do that again. The shots I must say didn't hurt at all; it was the tetanus shot that hurt. My great gr grandfather died of rabies, terrible death.

    1. Dearest Betsy,
It was just a matter of acting fast and taking it out of the danger zone. The bat talked a lot but I did not understand it... Don't think it was sick as it would not have taken off again.
You had quite an adventure with that dog on the high way! And so sad that your great-great grandfather died of rabies, nobody wants that. In the old Lassie movies it got mentioned frequently and good that there are shots. Pieter had those hurtful tetanus shots when he got bitten by a German shepherd while biking. They went from Animal Control to check the dog if he'd had his rabies shots. Not a nice experience!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  11. Yes they are great to have around, especially in summer with the mosquito population here in the south. I'm somewhat nervous around them though - we had two in our attic years ago and had to get them removed by a professional - and have the vents screened! When in Western Australia I saw swarms of gigantic bats hanging in the trees - not a pretty sight!

    1. Dearest Mary,
They sure are one of the most beneficial mammals to have around.
Since you live in an old house, those vents were not screened or it might have been torn. We have it properly screened off so no critter can enter our attic.
In Western Australia those you saw were the Kalong or fruit eating bats. They are large and hang upside down in trees. We had many in Indonesia and saw them in a huge tree.
      Hugs,
      Mariette
