{Do you know Dutch DWEILEN for Mopping up Water?}

When we had the Flash Flood problems we were using 17 Dutch style DWEILEN for mopping up the ground water that came in our basement. Besides the two wet vacs that we ran all the time. What a job. I ended up ordering 6 more of these Dutch Witte Dweilen, from Michigan's VanderVeen's also called: The Dutch Store. Just click on both links and you also might want to get their Dutch Chocolate Letters in time for the holiday season.
From Albert Heijn
A 50 x 60 cm DWEIL in white cotton...
It is woven such that it has a high absorption of water.
The way I use this is with a squeegee that I place over the wet 'dweil'. This one is dry, just for demonstrating on our balcony.
Next you turn the 'dweil' over the squeegee  and now you can move over your tiles.
I do this with a wet 'dweil' then I rinse it out and wring it dry and go over the same spot again for drying it off.
Those cotton dweilen (plural for dweil) I throw into my Miele washer and they get laundered on 170°F for cleaning and disinfecting them for the next use. This is a very hygienic way of mopping floors.

  2. I hope that every thing is fine with you.
We simply used a sump pump when our basement flooded. It was the after math that gave us a lot of problems.

    1. Dearest Munir,
No we did not use a sump pump but the water kept coming up through the tiles, from very high ground water... We had so many flash flood warnings in our regions. There were others that had problems too. We had no damage thank goodness!
      I will contact you.
      Hugs,

  3. Dearest Mariette;
Oh, yes!!! You must have much use of them this summer. I would have to use the normal towels and squeeze off the water by hands, p;)
Take care of yourselves, my friend.

Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan to my dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*

Oh, Pieter did throw in one old towel but to wring that was so rough on my hands. I prefer these very thick and thirsty and soft cloth though.
Yes, I am taking care of myself; don't worry sweet friend!

Oh, I do know the Dutch and Italian similarities from living and working in Italy. Glad I could give you this link. You might find other items that you miss as well.
After 30 years I still favor these and even more so for they can be laundered hot so they are sterile for the next use.

  5. Dear Mariette,
Thank you for sharing these wonderful towels with us and for sharing the links. I am sorry for the circumstances, but I appreciate the tips on keeping the floors dry. Hopefully you won't need to use them for the same purpose any time soon! Hugs xoxo

This is such a proven way of doing an easy job and thoroughly too. Glad I could pass those links on. Indeed, I plan on slowly wearing these and not having to use again 17 at a time. Gee, that was such an effort! But they are soft to the hands; I never use gloves but no damage whatsoever.
      Hugs,

      Liefs,

  12. It's very nice to have mops with high absoption, especially when you get lots of water coming in. Luckily, we have not had flood around here so far. When I clean hard floor, and it's just kitchen, bathroom and entrance area only, I usually use paper towel or regular towel. Get down on my knees and wipe. I rarely use mop..don't know why :-)

    1. Dearest Tamago,
Oh, a towel will work fine but is a lot harder on your skin, for wringing out. I don't buy any of the mops on a stick as these cannot be laundered the way I prefer to disinfect mine after each use.
      Hugs,
      Mariette
