Our Garden at the Time we had Access to Spent Mushroom Compost

After retirement and living and working in Indonesia we slowly could start establishing our garden.
The BEST years were when we had access to the Spent Mushroom Compost!
Mixing that in with the rather poor soil we have here, with hardly any waterholding capacity... did the trick.

This will give you an idea about how things USED to look, with the usage of that miracle Spent Mushroom Compost...

Mushroom Cultivation's BONUS!

When viewed on YouTube you can find lots of clickable links below video about things from the video... ENJOY!

Glad you could walk along with us and thanks for watching!

    1. Dearest Kim,
Pieter and I were the very first humans that ever worked this soil. And worked we did...
Too bad that we have no longer access to the spent mushroom compost, it made such a huge difference!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Querida Antónia,
Eso es cierto, pero la condición cardíaca del esposo Pieter ya no permite tal trabajo ... ¡Todavía atesoramos nuestro jardín con un equipo de trabajadores de habla hispana ahora!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
Thank you and we sure hope that we can remain here for as long as we live. The adjacent lot across the creek we would love to sell though. Right now they are cutting down three big trees for making it look more attractive as a building spot.
      Hugs,

  6. Gosh your garden is amazing Mariette, really enjoyed the video. Yes mushroom compost is an excellent addition to the soil. Does Pieter help you in the garden?

    1. Dearest Grace,
Those were our best garden years due to the mushroom spent compost and also Pieter's best years before his quadruple bypass and stent in his neck on September 3, 2010.
Yes, Pieter did the lion share in our garden, all the back breaking work himself. He dug the trenches for the water pipes to use our pump for watering and on and on. He built that wooden walkway and all bridges himself. A woman never could do that!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    2. A big garden is a lot of hard work indeed Mariette. I have a big garden also, not quite as big as yours but big enough. I had a landscaper here today to work out a design we can do together, am trying to get rid of as much lawn as possible replacing with paving and new flower beds. We'll see how that works out ☺️ 🌹

    3. Good luck Grace and any garden is an ongoing work in progress. We had big trees cut yesterday on the adjacent lot and paid $ 1,200. More to be done but it is too wet and soggy right now for tackling all that... This is already since April! Would love to have all that DONE!

  10. Hello Mariette and Pieter, I had to reply late to this post in order to have a non-rushed viewing of that video. It was so nice to hear your voices, especially in this informal setting. We have seen many glimpses of your garden, but the video shows the interconnections and the extent of what you have accomplished. Like everything you two have accomplished, it is interesting, thorough, and top-notch.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Thank you and yes, this video is representing the duo that we very much were at achieving things and working them out.
Sad that with the closure of that mushroom farm, our access to the miracle stuff ended abruptly. Georgia soil needs it so badly.
Due to that and also age related, we just maintain what we got and have a good crew coming in every 10 days or so. Pieter is happy with that; lawn looks great with neatly cut edges and so on.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Dearest Carolyn,
Thank you and our soil is not comparable to Prince Edwards Island where you manage to maintain a lovely garden.
The Dutch accent will never go away and that's what it is supposed to be; part of our Mother tongue.
      Hugs,
      Mariette
