Five out of Six Swinson Brothers died while serving during Civil War

Yes, at times history can be very cruel...
This happened also to one family, here in Laurens County, Georgia; the Swinson family where FIVE out of six brothers that served, died during the Civil War.
Yes, they all SIX served in the military... Imagine the pain it caused for the Parents!
Here are Mom & Dad, visiting this historical site on April 10, 1996.

Only brother Starkey Warren Swinson did come back home alive, after his service during the Civil War.
Gabriel G served in the Georgia Infantry and died in Vicksburg, Mississippi
John A served also in the Georgia Infantry and died in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Starkey W served also in the Georgia Infantry but was the ONLY brother that survived, and he died in 1914 in Broxton, Georgia
Thomas Elliott served as Volunteer in the Georgia Infantry and died in Raleigh, North Carolina
William Pinkney served in the Georgia Infantry and died in Laurens County, Georgia
Young Woodward served in the Georgia Infantry and died in Richmond, Virginia

FREEDOM has its price...

  1. I can’t even imagine ….I detest war. The leaders who want war should fight each other and not have our young men killed.

  3. Such sorrow for one family, Mariette. Yes, our Civil War was anything but civil, and we still feel the effects of it today, especially in the South.
    Blessings!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
Yes, for one family it was almost beyond bearing...
      No war is civil.

  4. I like Janey's comment, have often thought the same. But while wars are an enormous loss for most, they're also big bu$ine$$, huge profit for defense contractors, etc. And let's be real, human nature never changes, no matter the century. It's all about control of resources, whatever those resources are, and power. :-(

    1. Dearest Kim,
Guess every human being detests war but if you're drawn into it, you certainly do hope for being liberated.
My Pieter has lived through those horrors and they lost their home, the green houses... yet all were grateful to their liberators!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Hello Mariette, The Civil War has to a degree passed into legend, so graves like these are a valuable reminder that it was families and young soldiers who sacrificed for the war. To the west of Cleveland is Johnson's Island in Lake Erie, which contains a Confederate cemetery--presumably the northernmost one. Many people who visit was is now largely a vacation era take time to visit this solemn site.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Yes, those indeed are valuable reminders and ought to be kept in place for visiting and standing still at those tremendous sacrifices.

Throughout history it has always been the young that sacrificed so much and of course the loss for the families left behind.

Seguro que debe haber sido horrible para los padres por perder casi todos los niños durante una guerra ...

  10. This is very sad. Last night I watched the movie "Water Diviner" by chance. A father who lost three sons in the first world war went to Turkey to take them back to homeland.
Thanks for your information on whisk fern. The web site you introduced is very concise and useful. I will often check it from now on.

    1. Dearest RTC,
Yes, there are numerous war dramas and it makes one appreciate FREEDOM, when studying history.
We might want to watch that movie too... We only watch history or nature.
You're quite welcome on that information!
      Hugs,

  11. Dear Mariette - it must have been so devasting for these parents to loose five sons. Sadly the lessons of war across the ages never appear to be heeded or learnt.
