After cutting down trees, we both prefer to let the wood naturally decompose in our wood garden.
Husband Pieter took these photos of such an old tree being decomposed on December 4, 2021.
What you see in these photos are Turkey tail or Trametes versicolor.
Another perfect example of how mushrooms digest lignin and cellulose in nature.
Everything in nature has its function and so the cycle of life gets closed.
Do you have any variety of mushrooms in your garden?

We do get yellow type mushrooms like in the photo in old wood I keep in a corner of the garden to decompose.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Dearest Victor,
DeleteOh as Pieter quoted in his book 'Everything is everywhere, but the environment selects ~BAS BECKING.
Those spores are in the air or wherever and if there is old wood that they can digest, it will grow and help decompose.
Hugs,
Mariette
Your excellent photos prove the wood is healthy. Happy weekend to you.
ReplyDeleteDearest RTC,
DeleteWell, they seldom grow on living wood but rather digest the dead or dying wood.
Happy weekend to you and hugs,
Mariette
Abbracci,
Mariette
They are really beautiful! There are many of them in the forest.
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, they sure are a beautiful sight and you will find them in the forest everywhere.
Hugs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette and Pieter, Of course the woods in Ohio were a mycologist's dream, but in damp Taiwan the most ubiquitous fungus is mildew!

Dearest Jim,
DeleteWell, the tropics is a different story all together as we know from living in Indonesia.

Mariette
Mushrooms and toadstools give mthe creeps don't know why but always have
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteWhy would they give you the creeps? It is just the end-stage of digesting things in nature and nothing else. We cannot chew wood, they can and do it for us...
Hugs,
Mariette
Lovely photos, Mariette! Yes, we will get mushrooms in our yard, especially after a good rain.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Dearest Martha Jane,
DeleteThank you, Pieter has captured numerous toadstool photos and very good ones.
Rain helps in the decaying of trees or roots and so the fruit bodies will show.
Hugs,
Mariette
I would love to have a garden, although where I live there is a lot of green and many trees. I really like the contact with nature. It's simply inspiring.

Coisas de Feltro
Dearest Christina,
DeleteIt sure is the best there is in life, observing nature in all its splendor.
BUT weeds also grow in nature and having a big garden means a lot of work.
So far we've always enjoyed it and with some help for now, we still enjoy it.
Hugs,
Mariette
They are indeed a sight to behold.
ReplyDeleteMushrooms and toadstools are pretty magical things!
Have a great week ahead, dear Mariette.
((hugs))
Dearest Veronica,
DeleteThey sure are, some of nature's little miracles!
Hugs,
Mariette
