About Me

My photo
Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. About living in Italy, the Veneto area near Venice; in Indonesia, central Java. Why we love the southeast of the United States and moved back from Italy. Our love for gardening, the botanical way. Sharing with you our manifold treasures from exotic places and even offering several at Spectrenoir: http://ebay.to/2xI69uc, for others to enjoy. As well as high end silver items from Giovanni Raspini, Italy. I also do classes and consulting... too much to list here! Love to bring back some romance and quality to the daily life of others...

{Our Staircase Area}

This time I want to take you downstairs and show you our staircase area. We do run up and down the stairs several times a day; keeps us healthy I guess! Do you have to climb up and down too?
Maybe you remember that I did point out the first door in our hallway, going to the staircase area.
Okay, here we opened the door from the hallway to show you...
Railings all along. We did that for my Mom when she stayed for 6 weeks with us in 2005, together with my Dad. She had just had a knee replacement and we wanted to accommodate her as best as possible.
That's the same year we got our Infiniti FX35, so Mom could get in and out of the car effortless.
Turning around, you now look into the hallway and see the shiny tile baseboard.
In the USA, a staircase usually is a very 'lazy' one and by far not as narrow, nor steep as in Europe.
We also have solid oak planks; Bruce Liberty Plains 5 inch natural white oak here on our treads and risers.
Downstairs are the same white tiles that came home with us in a container from Italy.
To  the left, near the hallway door...
To the right at the top is a fully beaded South African Zulu Knobkerrie  (weapon...).
Samba balls from South Africa and some Indonesian art...
Straw art work form Indonesia from brother Martin and we had it framed at Irok gallery.
Our entire home is like a museum in a way!
When my dear Mother-in-law was already in her 80s she did make this petit-point work from their home that got destroyed during the war. Lots of airplanes in the air. Also a doggy; guess that meant it went to heaven.
It was a very old home from the 17th Century but it is lost due to the damage of WWII.
My Mother-in-law also did cross stitch these mushrooms.
It hung at the practical training College for Mushroom Growing, in the Netherlands where my husband was the founder and principal until he became VP Training & Development for Campbell Soup's Mushroom Division in the USA. But Pieter of course would not leave that behind!
Only a very tall person has to bend his head, going down the stairs...
The wall to the left with a special mushroom framing, it is from linen cloth.
At the top is a poster with a poem about a pear tree that did not bear fruit which we got from my brother Martin's wife Betsy.
Below to the left you see the door to the laundry room and the other one goes into the garage.
Here you can better see the solid oak risers and treads...
Those railings helped me a lot early 2010 when I became paralyzed and shortly after.
Pure Irish Linen it says...
Full with tips about mushrooms!
Our Whirlpool Water Cooler/Heater; either way! On top is the Primo interchangeable bottle.
A cat painting done by my sister Diny Van den Munckhof in 2005
A mushroom batik from Bali...
Automatic moving sensor for light on/off.
We had it framed with a pink matting that is used in the pillow's color as well.
Diny did carry this painting over when she and her significant other stayed with us for 4 weeks in October of 2007
We had these cabinets made for storing all kind of baking and kitchen items like my waffle irons, mixing bowls and French Demarle Flexipan silicone molds.
There is also a 30" Miele Convection Food Warming Drawer with dual heating system.
A bargain found on eBay as a display model for half the price; from Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center in Los Angeles, California.
Got this gem in December of 2008 and it helps me for serving dinner for larger groups.
Husband Pieter did build me the outlet for using this and he put tile atop so that way I can place hot bowls on top of it.
That's my foot mirroring in the shiny black glass...
Now looking from the garage door towards the door to the Rose Suite hallway...
To the right the door knob is from our laundry room.
My Dutch rack for holding all my cleaning tools off the floor.
You also can see that husband Pieter did add a tile baseboard here as well.
The framing around the glass panels of the laundry room has yellowed over the years. That door is from 1990 and the one to the garage husband Pieter did build in early 2005 when he placed that wall here, to divide the garage from the staircase area.
Yes, my worker bee has done it all; a true handy man with golden hands! I am blessed.
Next to the human door to the garage you now also see the cat door...
Only in winter time they come into the house and now they are on the driveway, in the gazebo and in the garden or wood garden.
That was another round of tile baseboard!
I use cotton mats since they're easy to launder and function well.

{Our Hallway}

Let me show you the next finished project, inside our home. Husband Pieter, did also change the wooden baseboard in our hallway into a tiled one. These white tiles for the bathrooms, kitchen, veranda and hallway came back with us from Italy in a 40-foot container with all our belongings. Life in Italy was over as we did not build our home in Italy but went back to Georgia/USA. Okay, welcome into our hallway!
From the front door you face the dining room to the left and straight ahead is the living room.
The white ceramic chandelier from Italy you can find below this post in a previous post's link.
Those white tiles are from Italy, we bought them at the time we worked and lived there.
When we did not construct the house in Italy, we did bring everything back to Georgia/USA.
Here you see husband Pieter's work; a tile baseboard after he removed the wooden one.
This is nice glossy and a lot easier for cleaning and it looks better with the tiles in this room.
Turning now back towards the front door, past the dining room door.
You cannot see my French DMC Rose Filet Lace Crocheted Curtains here, due to the glare.
But in the link below this post you can view them. By the way, that is my 3rd most viewed post!
Our French oak coat rack with chest.
Looking all the way to the end of the hallway, where our master bedroom is.
First door is to the staircase, next door is a closet where we keep our winter coats and boots.
Next is the office (you recently saw a post about it) and last door is the guest bedroom (you also got to see that).
Stepping halfway down the hallway you can see the office door to the right and guest bedroom next with the master bedroom straight ahead.
These beautiful Ipomoeas in blue (Pieter's favorite color - which he CAN distinguish very well) are done by my sister Diny Van den Munckhof, in 2004.
The brass plate with peacock was a gift to Pieter when he was still principal at the practical training college in The Netherlands.
Sister Diny's artwork...
Frame is by Irok gallery, our favorite as they do museum quality framing.
Looking back to the closet where we keep our coats and boots and the door to the staircase.
Looking to the right you see a row of  10 hand painted wild mushroom plates by A. Zen Nove, ITALY.
That was a gift from our company in Italy. They had each year a different one painted by this artist in a limited numbered edition of 100. See link below post for more details.
Three Royal Tichelaar Makkum pieces in polychrome.
Made by the The Netherland's oldest company and framed in French oak.
Royal Tichelaar Makkum wall plate in polychrome.
This photo is taken from the door opening of the master bedroom.
To the right you see our bi-fold closet which I did show in a previous post: My closet looks like a neat store - see below post.
the next door is a closet where we keep albums and the vacuum cleaner and such.
A bit more recessed is the door to the guest bathroom, that you recently saw in a post.
Turning towards the master bedroom door.
These hand embroidered wild mushrooms in cross stitch, I made long time ago and they hung in the office of Principal Pieter at his practical training college for mushroom growing.
Looking up to the ceiling where a foldout staircase leads to the attic.
THAT will be another project...
Hope you enjoyed the tour!

{Our Smaller Office}

As promised in my two previous posts: {Less Office Space in Return for Our DEEPER Reach In Closet...} and {Our DEEPER Reach In Bedroom Closet}, here is Our Smaller Office. All done and the dust has been cleaned away. Not only the dust from this remodeling but also from the next project which I will show you shortly. But we're done with this room; almost ready to do the happy dance!
That's the office side of the DEEPER Reach In Closet...
You can see to the left the door. The indoor shutters for the windows, I had to close as the sun would prevent me from taking any photo...
We did place all four of our oak Barrister book cases on top of each other.
Way on top is my oak sewing chest...
We got our oak Barrister book cases from the Levenger Outlet store in Del Rey Beach, Florida.
Looking back to the door and into the halway... There seems to actually be no loss of space that we would ever miss!
Let's turn full circle... The oak desk that I used for writing, previous to having my PC.
The turned wood lamp has been handmade by my friend Becky's Father.
He no longer is with us...
My printer and my scanner are to the left in the other oak desk...
By the way, this is also a new solid oak plank floor by Bruce.
It very well matches all our solid French oak furniture from the 80s and early 90s.
Emptying the room is the hardest part. We did move into the Rose Suite downstairs, as all this was stored inside our master bedroom.
That's the corner where these blog posts come to live...
Love my special Herman Miller® Aeron® Chair with basic lumbar support for my back.
The best thing about these chairs is that they can be ordered in S, M and L and this is the S version, called 'A'.
Hyatt House Miami Airport had them in their guest rooms and that's how I found out about its great support!
Found mine at a discount at Madison Seating in New York, N.Y.
They also come with a caster option that is fit for hard wood floors.
My PC stand is from Office Max, aluminum and glass.
The beautiful artwork above my monitor has been done by a friend, who made it for Pieter's birthday one year. Frame is by Irok gallery.
Stepping back into the door opening so you can see the window again.
Shutters closed for the sunshine.
Our PC is from Costco Wholesale.
IMPOSSIBLE to capture that on photo with the sunshine...
Lacquered Brass Window Decorations are from Jech Kunstgewerbe, Blaustein/Germany.
The three needle lace hangings are hand made by me.
They are hung inside an acrylic frame and held together by clear acrylic nuts & bolts.
I use dual sided Scotch tape for holding the lace in place.
Anyone wanting to frame an heirloom doily or whatever; just contact me!
Below this post I will put a link where you can see those acrylic nuts & bolts in detail.
On the side wall of the DEEPER Reach In Closet we hung those Royal Tichelaar Makkum blue tiles. Royal Tichelaar Makkum is the Netherlands' oldest company!
My Paternal Uncle Jan, did frame them. It is not wood but he did mold a gypsum frame for each one of them.
My dear Aunt gave this to me after my Uncle passed away because we always have been very close with him.
Another of those gifts to treasure for a life time...
So what you say about our finished job?
This is what prevented me from taking photos with the shutters open... 30°C or 86°F at 15:00 o'clock...
Wishing you all part of that sunshine!
