Our Acapulco, Mexico Vacation I

Yes, we have enjoyed some very special vacations in Acapulco, México.
A country where we both worked for over ten years as consultants.
View of Acapulco Bay from our room 2103 at the 21st floor
My flight ticket home on February 25, 2005.
We arrived on February 15...
Hyatt Regency Acapulco was our home for those 10 days...
It read: WELCOME TO THE PEARL OF THE PACIFIC!
Of course with our Hyatt card we had access to Regency Club.
Quite a luxury which we enjoyed world wide!
City view and you see bottom right they even had a Walmart Super Center
View of the 3 big pools and the beach with large tropical garden all around
View from the beach
View towards hotel, from beach area
We both loved the lush tropical garden setting...
Such a happy place to be together!
Well, on February 18, we both made a phone call to The Netherlands, using our American Express card. This due to the somber news of Wilhelmien, Pieter's middle brother Toon's love. She had pancreatic cancer and only three more weeks to live.
That was a rip off but to both of us those 7 minutes talking to her for US $ 49.89 was worth it!
It sure did lift her up 💕
On Sunday, February 20, we also prayed for her during Mass at noon, on the 23rd floor.
Our boss Tino and his wife Carmen drove four hours down from México City on the Maxi Pista for visiting us! They arrived on August 23.
We felt honored and enjoyed this dinner together at the Kookaburra restaurant across from our hotel on the Acapulco Bay. It is unique due to its spectacular bay views. See the tree beam to the right of me? A very unique open construction.
We all together went to the old town to see: ACAPULCO, MEXICO — THE CLIFF DIVERS OF LA QUEBRADA ←click for 1 minute video.
Both of us had seen cliff divers before, in Hawaii
Our last night, we enjoyed this spectacular sunset...

Our arrival flights on February 15, were an adventure as I flew with Continental via Houston and Pieter with United via México City and with Aviasco to Acapulco. But they didn't fly, so he got there with AeroMexico a good hour later.

Going home was another adventure.
We both left for the airport in the taxi I'd bought my round trip ticket for upon arrival. We had hugged Tino and Carmen goodby and left at 10:30 AM for Pieter's earlier flight around noon.

We both only flew with hand luggage so checking in went swift. Pieter had to go to the domestic terminal and I to international so we hugged goodbye.
Pieter's flight got delayed one hour and I worried about his connection in Chicago... from México City and then to Atlanta.
Pieter left at 2:30 PM instead of at noon time—needless to say that he missed his connection with United to Chicago.
He arrived in México City and after pleading with AeroMexico, they gave him a ticket for 8:00 AM next day and non–stop to Atlanta. They also dropped him off at the Riazor Hotel in México City.
Pieter had requested Continental and United to page me but I never heard any message...

In Atlanta around midnight, there was no service at all. The information booth was un–staffed!
Did wait till 0:30 AM and used my spare key from our Mazda Millenia S and sat in the car by 0:50 AM on my way home.
At home by 2:50 AM when checking the answering machine, sure enough I got a message from Pieter from the Riazor Hotel in México City with his number there and request to call him.
Sorry for having to wake him up—Georgia is one hour ahead of time but Pieter was glad we made contact. He was mad at the airlines for poor service and not contacting me.

Well, by 4:15 AM I was in bed and up again at  8:15 AM and after a light breakfast I was on my way to the airport after I'd gassed up.
Went to the AeroMexico counter after seeing that flight 306 had landed slightly early. They still had to go through customs.
So I had time to verify that Pieter actually had been ON that flight. Went to three people before I finally got my info—after pushing for it.
No, this is protected information for security reason...! Yes, I said but the plane is already on the ground, no longer in the air... So she did check and asked: Pieter?—yes, that's him!

It took Pieter 40 minutes till we could hug each other and were re–united again.
Pieter drove home and went straight to the Country Lane Pet Lodge to pick up our kitties Spooky and Barty boy.

That was the closing of United Airlines for us after this adventure with the frequent flyer 'free ticket' for Pieter. Well, still $ 60 and he paid $ 375 for the small segment from México City to Acapulco. The gain was merely $ 200 compared to my ticket of $ 605 all in with Continental.

Pieter vowed to never travel separately again!

POINSETTIA DAY on December 12

Guess most people DO love Poinsettias for the Advent and Christmas season.
But do you know its history?

Poinsettia Day ←click link

The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico who in 1828 sent cuttings of the plant he'd discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charlotte, South Carolina. Botanically, the plant is known as Euphorbia Pulcherrima.” (Submitted on March 11, 2010, by Brian Scott of Anderson, South Carolina.)
If you click on the above link: Poinsettia Day, you can read: In July of 2002, the House of Representatives created Poinsettia Day, passing a Resolution to honor Paul Ecke Jr. who is considered the father of the poinsettia industry.
These Poinsettias are photographed on the day I became an American Citizen.
On December 3, I forgot to celebrate my 30th birthday...

Joel Roberts Poinsett visited Guanajuato, México in 1822 and both of us were there in the end of March, 1999: Historic Town of Guanajuato, Mexico and Adjacent Mines ←click link

Cathedral Mexico City Zocala poinsettias ←click link for images to enjoy the RED SEA of POINSETTIAS during CHRISTMAS time. We both have visited that Cathedral and it is sad that it is sinking...

We even do have a Poinsettia tree in our garden; see previous blogpost about it below.

You can read that previous post below: History of the Poinsettia.
Did you know these facts about the Poinsettia?
Which is your favorite color?

Our 4 Sibling Felines will be 16 Tomorrow!

Yes, we are a HOUSEHOLD OF SENIORS...
Five senior kitties and Bandido, Spooky, Spunky and Tiggy-Tiger will be all 16 on March 30.
They are all born here at our home and I was assisting their Mamita when she gave birth.
We rescued Mamita 'Spicy' and brought her home on the plane, from Acapulco, Mexico.
Poor Sacha girl only reached 6 years as she got hit by a car... see post below.
Spunky girl this morning on the windowsill at breakfast time.
YES, she does use 'eyeliner'...
Spunky is a Mackerel Tabby Tiger.
Spooky boy on November 13, 2022, with the elastic that I'd cut off from fitted sheet for using fabric to add to duvet cover making it wide enough for our newest Caribbean down duvet.
They love to play with anything!
Tiggy–Tiger girl on her favorite blanket...
She is a very feisty Mackerel Tabby Tiger girl!
Bandido (Dido) boy on the cotton mat in front of balcony's sliding door 'indoor shutters' of our bedroom.
He is the most svelte and silky kitty—resembling most his Mamita Spicy.
Dido is also the most vocal of all!

Sixteen is quite an age for any kitty and we both are grateful they all four reached that!

Misión San Gil Querétaro, Mexico

Over those 12 years of consulting for Monteblanco in México, we sure have seen a lot of the country.
As such we also ended up at a wonderful hacienda Misión San Gil Querétaro.
Pieter, Agustín and me on March 7, 2002 at breakfast in Misión San Gil Querétaro, after our 2 nights here in room 108.
We'd been already for 10 days in México, at different locations.
We had flown in on Sunday, February 24, from Altanta/USA non-stop to Monterrey/Mexico in the northern part.
On February 26, right after breakfast on our way to one of their mushroom farms, I was with Juan Carlos Fuentes (the ex bull fighter!) in his car, ahead of Pieter and Agustín's car.
We were almost crushed to the concrete edge by a wide load truck... Juan Carlos immediately braked as a super-fast reflex! The smoke went off his car's tires, Pieter said, as he was driving with Agustín behind us.
Tires almost bald from braking. If he hadn't been such a well-trained, fast acting person, I could never have recounted this.
Upon our arrival here on the 5th of March, without Agustín, both of us had a good meal in the beautiful restaurant and I also bought the Spanish language magazine ' VANIDADES' with the new Dutch Queen Máxima (Su Alteza Real = Her Royal Highness) on the cover and more photos with good reporting about their royal wedding inside.
This is where we sat for breakfast in top photo, hotel Misión San Gil Querétaro click and click through for viewing more photos.
We only used our video camera for capturing the white and colored peacocks in the garden at that time.
Even one we saw flutter onto the roof.
This was called Restaurant Bar Los Arcos (The Arches) at hotel Misión San Gil Querétaro, where we both had dinner...
A very bad screenshot from our video... but clearly showing those Arches.
Another bad screenshot from our video from the outside of Restaurant Bar Los Arcos
Hotel Misión San Gil Querétaro seems to have changed 'color'...
Interesting is that Hotel Misión San Gil is actually only 7 km away from Hacienda Galindo where we've stayed several times before!
This photo shows clearly how the Spaniards at that time used the water available for irrigating the fields.
A rather fertile region.
On March 9, we departed from the Camino Real hotel to the airport with a taxi, for our flight to Cancun to have 3 days of vacation AFTER our consulting job. As per Pieter's request. I'd asked him if he wanted those 3 days before or afterwards.
A lot of things went wrong this trip...
At the Camino Hotel, my clothes (that I kept separate for Cancun!) got stolen from the drawer in our room. Usually we never took expensive clothes but this was meant to wear on vacation after work in Cancun.
It was a very sad experience and with our insurance we have a US $ 1,000.00 deductible and Camino Real was not very willing to cover the loss.
We got an offer for a special rate during 40 nights...
That would not yield much, as we only were there at the hotel a few nights, alternated with hotels at all other locations in different states.
SAD and of course, due to one 'rotten apple' a good name can get tainted, but we were the victim of it all.
I trashed all the paperwork, because those were only negative reminders of something terrible and bad that happened to us.
We know that losing things is not the end of the world but it hurts when you're not a rich person and have built up a nice wardrobe over more than ten years, after quitting the job in Indonesia (living there I mean!).
More and more we stayed home for getting dressed from our closet, rather than from the suitcase.
So for that reason, we took nice things to the Hyatt Regency in Cancun via the Camino Real...
😞
Oh, and Cancun at the Hyatt Regency was not a good thing...
Haha, after work for finally being able to RELAX, as was Pieter's idea.
BUT it was SPRING BREAK...!!!
So noisy and so crowded, we could not believe our ears and yes above all, the enormous consumption of alcohol at the pool.
Not a happy trip in all, aside from the pleasant work together with the staff from Monteblanco and nice stays at all hotels!
Maybe once in all those years; still not bad.
But I did not want to hide this fact...

Historic Town of Guanajuato, Mexico and Adjacent Mines

One more historic Mexican gem...
Pieter and I, with Jorge to the right, stand here overlooking the historic 16th century town of Guanajuato a UNESCO World Heritage Site and founded by the Spanish in the 16th century.
To the left of the railing you still can see the baroque style Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato... (Collegiate Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, Mexico).
We had arrived here on Saturday evening, coming by car from Guadalajara and were staying at Hotel Hacienda Misión.
After checking in, we went downstairs to listen to this group playing and then walked into the historic center of Guanajuato.
Late dinner outside on a patio together with Jorge and Agustín, just a light meal of cheese and later some ham with melon and a glass of wine.
By midnight we were in our room...
Jorge did come from this branch!
Yes, we have driven past these huge BLUE AGAVE fields and it IS since 2006 on the World Heritage list of UNESCO!
Did you know it takes 10 years for growing the agave 'pineapple' for fermenting and distilling it?
Click on these links and then on link behind saved from.
At least both of us had no idea it took THAT long and that they have been doing this for 2,000 years...
On Sunday, we first explore the beautiful gardens of Hacienda Misión with e.g. Jardín de las Pergolas
My favorite Jacaranda tree was blooming...
Pieter and I below the Jacaranda blossoms...
Everywhere in Mexico you find those bearing walls due to the earthquake danger.
Long stone stairs and lovely vines on both sides...
Ancient walls... This very old Hacienda Misión also had once a silver mine on its premises.
We toured the Hacienda inside and also its chapel and here is an outdoor statue.
By car we went from our Hacienda Hotel to the El Pípila statue on top of the mountain!
Then we walked around in the old center of Guanajuato...
Looking down onto the historic district of Guanajuato with to the right the steeples of the Basílica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, Mexico.
Agustín, Pieter and Jorge overlooking the historic district.
Well, they actually turned towards El Pípila for the photo...

~
It was Palm Sunday, so went to Mass at 13:00 o'clock and we later entered another large Church for listening to the organ, at the end of their Mass.
Again we have witnessed a touching thing going on last night when we walked there. The cast iron gates around the Churches were closed but outside, rolled inside blankets and like sardines next to each other, were the vendors of the woven Palm Sunday crosses.
In order to obtain a good spot for offering them to the Church going crowd for sale on Palm Sunday, they slept there during the night. Just imagine — on the pavement!
~
We walked and visited the home of Diego Rivera (museum) painter and muralist 1886-1957.
On a patio we enjoyed a very spicy meal and we walked some more.
Next we visited an old silver mine from 1650 with a shaft of 525 meters deep (1,722 feet). Still in production!
That's where I got gifted a piece of dark grey silver oxide with yellow pyrite in it.
Shown here is the front.
This is the back side and it measures about 1.5 inch wide or 3.8 cm.
Also bought silver earrings with malachite at the mine.
Malachite is opaque emerald green copper ore.
Those silver malachite earrings were very tricky to photograph.
Top is done outside, in the palm of my hand and then on my leather diaries inside.
Also an elephant in white stone with Cubic Zirconia eyes...
Yes, they also did mine gemstones!
The silver oxide and this white stone elephant, reside in my authentic antique letterpress drawer, in our bedroom.
Scroll down here for seeing it: {My OPA - GRANDDADDY}

Mexico City Restaurante Danubio a Basque Seafood restaurant

In-between a hectic schedule of work there always were those special moments...
A very happy dinner with our hosts Agustín and Carmen.
This was at the special Restaurante Danubio in Mexico City established in 1936 when two chefs of Basque origin emigrated to Mexico.
Specialty is Seafood.
On the wall are framed messages, written on a napkin from important characters that have eaten at Restaurante Danubio.
Important figures from Mexico and the world have eaten and enjoyed a meal such as artists, politicians, painters, athletes, writers and journalists.
Always enjoyable with such great mushroom friends!
Like in Italy, using olive oil and vinegar with the salad.
Another pleasant dinner on a Thursday evening on March 26, 1998 and from there we went to a Cuban bar, which was very nice but it was getting late.
It was almost 1:45 o'clock when we turned down the light in our room at the Camino Real Hotel, Mexico City and next morning we did rise at 7:30 o'clock.
