UPS 2nd Day Air Delivery from Louisiana Nursery + Fight against Tuberous Roots of Greenbrier!

We  found very special trees and shrubs in Louisiana from Albert, Dalton, Ken and Belle Durio in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Louisiana Nursery
We got the largest size available, five gallon pots, for getting a good start of an established shrub or tree.
This is where our special Magnolia Namnetense came from and our beloved Quercus Virginiana Grand View Gold.
Again, I've built in clickable points with English information as we always talked to Mom & Dad to whom we mailed these videos in The Netherlands.
Their Catalog of MAGNOLIAS and OTHER GARDEN ARISTOCRATS, has been the most impressive and comprehensive one, we ever saw...
Love their quote: FOR THOSE WHO KNOW THE ECONOMY OF QUALITY
We sure treasure their special Magnolia (see post below) and their Golden Live Oak (see also below).
At the end of the video Pieter mentions the mean thorns on those Greenbrier, standing backwards. ←click link for seeing such a thorn.

211 Countries Visited - Welcome Marshall Islands & Hurricane Michael visited us...

On October 5, my humble blog got visited by the 211th Country - Welcome Marshall Islands!
According to the World Factbook, Marshall Islands are situated in Australia-Oceania.
~
Yep, from the Panhandle of Florida, Hurricane Michael traveled through South Georgia right over our area.
This we got in the morning...
This was the Hurricane Warning on October 10 with strong SouthEast wind of 77 km/h or 47.8 mi/h
A 4-fold warning...
By midnight it turned into a five-fold warning!
HURRICANE WARNING
TORNADO WATCH
FLOOD WARNING
TROPICAL WEATHER STATEMENT
FLASH FLOOD WATCH
It was just past midnight on October 11 at 12:16 AM when I read the above and especially the EastSouthEast wind of 85 km/h or 52.8 mi/h looked scary so I decided to stay awake till it would pass over.
Temperatures are in C, it was quite a bit cooler than the previous days.
Dublin is right in the darkest area...
Husband Pieter was sound asleep and I could hear the wind all around the house and heard some big noises, of a tree that came down.
Turned out several big pine trees from a back neighbor's property had come down.
By 12:30 AM the power went off... and it was pitch dark!
Winds still were beating up anything that came in its patch.
We were only 19 hours without power and a couple of hours today...
Lineworkers are still working hard for restoring power back as soon as possible.
Even lineworkers from neighboring states have come to the South for helping out!
The above map gives you the dates or having power back on: October 12, Midnight, October 13, and October 14, October 15 and October 16...
We cannot complain!
Our 6-year old Drake Elm - Ulmus parvifolia had snapped off...
It looked so dreary and gray next morning!
Our Pecan tree had come out...
Our Pussy willow snapped off...
Of course, our bridges took a brutal beating as well, you can see some damage to the right at one of our three bridges.
TONS of green leaves have been snatched off and little branches are everywhere...
This is on the edge of the lawn and on our driveway... so many green leaves are off!
Also our Leyland Cypress is leaning over the fence towards the street and needs to be cut down...
At the end of our property line in the corner with the neighbors...
This needs to be cut down!
But NO damage to our home, not even to our greenhouse!
Lucky, compared to so many others in the Florida Panhandle; our prayers are with those people!
Proud of our community that is feeding 375 linemen (lineworkers) for lunch tomorrow!

Thanks for your visit and comment.

Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Globe'

Last week, husband Pieter did find a beautiful Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Globe' for planting inside a big planter on the patio. Click on the pink hyperlink for info by the Missouri Botanical Garden.
We love anything variegated as it adds beautiful color to the garden and goes very well with our home's exterior paint color of Golden Mist by Benjamin Moore.
A true GOLDEN on this Thuja occidentalis.
Unfortunately, this Swallowtail Papilio polyxenes we found dead on the driveway...
Don't you LOVE these golden leaves?
Love its name 'Golden Globe'
Our Tiggy-Tiger girl loves to photo bomb...
All those big planters, Pieter found on sale and he has spray painted them in a matching color.
Patio is not yet clean as again we are expecting some tornado like weather.
Good for getting rid of the pollen but dry leaves and catkins all come down on the balcony and patio.
Our eldest, 13-year old Barty boy poses proudly next to the planter with lovely Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Globe'

Thank you for your visit!

{Pussy Willow from Cuttings}

We did have a Weeping Pussy Willow three years ago but we lost it when our creek got flooded. But last year while shopping at Whole Foods Market in Atlanta, we did buy a bouquet of Pussy Willows with the intent to grow them from these cuttings. Even though they're not the Weeping variety that we lost, but it worked and look:
Here it is, a young Pussy Willow Shrub from Cuttings!
Nicely close to the creek in its natural habitat where they thrive best.
Near our first bridge across the creek into our wood garden.
Mid March they did give us so much joy and they look beautiful!
No doubt these tiny shrubs will bigger over time and let me cut again a bouquet for in a vase.
There is even a spider living in the top part of this little shrub!
Spiders seem to prefer them as this one too shows some cob web threads.
Both of us grew up with plenty of Pussy Willows in the area where we grew up so we're quite pleased with these five new shrubs!
Do you have a Pussy Willow in your garden?

{RARE Icicles in Our Garden}

For Central Georgia it is quite rare to see Icicles but today, January 29, we did have lots of them. Our trees were hanging down under the heavy weight. So please come with me on a tour to see the Icicles in Our Garden...
This photo is showing our iced gazebo roof through the icicles that hang from our Drake Elm - Ulmus parvifolia.
To the left you see the Rose Stepping Stones...
Two new Rose Stepping Stones in weathered bronze are still waiting to be placed.
The table and chairs in front of our Rose Suite, on the little patio, are covered with ice as well...
The fronds of our Palm Tree are full of ice too.
Icicles hanging down from our Golden Live Oak 'Quercus Virginiana Grand View Gold'
Our Fragrant Magnolia Grandiflora 'Namnetensis Flore Pleno' with iced leaves...
Icicles on our Castanopsis cuspidata--Japanese Chinquapin
Our Cedrus Deodara or Cedar Rose Tree with big frozen teardrops hanging down on it.
Buds of our Our Japanese Somei Yoshino Cherry with icicles hanging down...
Our Sky Pencils - Ilex crenata Japanese holly with ice on the red polished beach pebbles...
Closeup of the red polished beach pebbles on ice on top of an Eco Friendly Tree Ring from recycled rubber.
So much for the 2014 Ice Storm in the South...
Stay warm and safe wherever you are!

{Our Sky Pencils - Ilex crenata Japanese holly}

  • On August 20, my husband Pieter planted these Sky Pencils - Ilex crenata Japanese holly. The pots came from Home Depot and are frost proof. Just have a look at these Sky Pencils...

  • Under each pot is a large tile for placing them. Shown also all the balusters, posts and ginger bread from Vintage Woodworks, Texas. Wreath with some real green.

  • Of course we did baby them during the extreme heat!

  • Yes, still on November 12, you see the stark contrast between shade and sunshine, even close to 5:00 PM.
  • These pots were in the shade most of the day, as they're on the north side towards the road.

The Ginger Bread from Vintage Woodworks resembles lace work in wood...
  • This was taken on November 12 and you can see the fall colors.
  • The oak tree in front of the house (top right) has lost most of its leaves already...

  • To the left of the house is another huge oak tree.
  • Some of the prostrate gardenias did bloom again in November, after the hot and dry summer.
  • Do you keep  evergreens in pots as well?
