- Guess for lots of people, all over the world, the Dutch symbols are: windmills, tulips, wooden shoes...
- Okay, let me show you at least one of those; Windmill 'Eendracht Maakt Macht' Unity is Strength in Horst, my City of Birth.
- As a matter of fact, the windmill is located in the little hamlet of Meterik, that belongs under Horst aan de Maas.
- This is the largest municipality in the Province of Limburg in the deep south of The Kingdom of The Netherlands.
- By the way, on April 30, it will indeed become a Kingdom again as Queen Beatrix will pass the crown to Prince Willem-Alexander.
- This photo is taken on Saturday, September 26 of 1987, when we went to The Netherlands with our American friends, Hank & Doylene. Funny is that here I do wear a plaid Burberry skirt and below I also wear plaids...
- Here I am 8 years old (l) with brothers Martin and Piet and sister Diny.
- Walking on a Sunday and Dad making pictures with his Agfa camera...
- Mom always did iron those hair bows for us girls to wear with a special barrette.
- Did any of you get to wear such hair bows?
- And again, all four of us...
- This is a Moundmill, with the name: Eendracht Maakt Macht from 1899
- Just click the hyperlink for reading more, in English.
- Also here is a website about Molen 'Eendracht Maakt Macht' in Meterik
- They newly also do have their own FB Fan Page: Molen 'Eendracht Maakt Macht' in Meterik where you will also find great photos!
Mariette bedankt! 1899 Windmill 'Eendracht Maakt Macht' in my City of Birth (click and see how they used my post).
Hope you enjoyed this trip into the past of my childhood area!
Your childhood and that of your siblings is adorable. Also, you must have been talk of the town in your teens.

ReplyDeleteBonsoir Dearest Mariette. Thank you for sharing your family memories and photos with us. I think I would have guessed this was Holland even if you had not mentioned it :-) Lovely little children, and I also like the big bow in your hair. Mine was never long enough (and I was too much of a tomboy...) to style my hair that way. Hugs to you, Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

Lieve groet, Mea
It's a beautiful windmill and nice with the old photos.
ReplyDeleteHugs
ReplyDeleteFijne dag!

How exciting to have lived where there were wonderful windmills.
ReplyDeleteMy mother after she milked four cows and cooked breakfast, tediously brushed each of my black 'Shirley Temple' style curls around her finger as I sat on a high stool. She tied a freshly pressed silk ribbon into a bow that held the topmost curl in place. How I hated it! When I was 8, I talked Daddy into cutting off the curls. After that I had bangs, no bows.
Hi Mariette,
ReplyDeleteLove the pics from your childhood. The windmill is beautiful. I love these old pics from the past. Looks like such special memories forever with your siblings. The hair bows are too cute.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Hugs, Celestina Marie
Liebe Mariette,
Fijn weekend, lieve groet
ReplyDeleteFirst thing comes to my mind as Dutch symbol is always tulip...I think it's because I love tulip :-) But windmill, of course! Your photos are beautiful. I love the ones of you when you were a little girl. The hair bow is very cute! It's so sweet that your mom ironed them for you :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry your Spooky ran away. Did he come back? If not maybe you can leave his favorite food or catnip outside of your house to attract him. I hope he is back home safely!
Dear Mariette,
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet photos of you as a child with your sister and brothers! The windmills are wonderful and to me that is what I think of when I think of the Dutch. We have many relocated Dutch here in WA state from the time of WWII and there are beautiful tulip and daffodil fields and lovely nurseries from their expertise. I did wear little plaid dresses and hair bows in my hair as a child. Mostly the bows were at the ends of my braids or around my pony tail, which was always a mess because I was a tom-boy!
Hugs, xoxo
Loved the old photos of you and your siblings and the photo of the windmil is awesome............
ReplyDeleteDearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteOh Yes, tulips represent your birth country; and they are one of favorite flowers. I REALLY miss planting them in my small back yard which we used to have... I remeber posting for 'green day'.
You and your sweet siblings look really adorable with windmill♡♡♡
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
THANKS for all your visits and comments; this post was fun for going back into childhood again. So many fond memories to share. That's the book of life...
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to all of you.
Mariette
Hello Mariette, It sure is interesting to see these historic windmills, especially since today we are going back to that technology. Unfortunately, the text to this post came out garbled, so I could not read your description.
ReplyDelete--Road to Parnassus
hoi Mariette,
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Molen-Eendracht-maakt-Macht-in-Meterik/551785334843632?fref=ts
http://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.nl/2013/04/1899-windmill-eendracht-maakt-macht-in.html#axzz2muXuqDVj
Groetjes. Sef Coppers
