{Old World Charm of Crocheted Valences}

  • Just caught up on blog reading and read dear friend Karen's post: Thrift Store Treasures on her lovely blog of Beatrice Euphemie.
  • She is showing off her treasures and I spotted some very familiar Old World Charm of Crocheted Valences and did mention so in my comment.
  • Lo and behold. For running the wet vac to suck up the excessive rain water that entered into husband Pieter's work shop, I just killed my waiting time in-between emptying the 6 gallon bucket, by scanning old slides.
  • I've set up my laptop with my second scanner in the Rose Suite's living room. So I can hear the sound the wet vac is making next door, when full.
  • You guess my amazement when I came across this photo that we took during one of our trips to Europe in 1985, as a writing subject for my weekly feature in our local news paper. Never used this then, but now I like to show it to you as once again crocheting has become very popular.
  • This particular home owner must LOVE flowers.
  • They are hanging from above the window...
  • On a shelf inside the window...
  • Inside a planter box on the window sill and indoors are also plants on the window sill and hanging...
  • Those crocheted lace valences got hung by interlacing a thin rod, either brass or wood, through some openings at the top.
  • Rather practical and just click on the above link in Karen's blog to see such hand crocheted lace valences.
It sure did bring back fond memories...
Do you have some Old World Charm of Crocheted Valences?

{Our Rose Suite Kitchenette}

Let's go back to Our Rose Suite and continue the tour... This time I would love to show you Our Rose Suite Kitchenette that is built into our Rose Suite Living Room. If you missed any of the previous posts, all links you find beneath this post.
Previous post was about Our Rose Suite Living Room. You are facing the door to the Rose Suite bedroom here.
Before turning to our Rose Suite Kitchenette I want to show you this remarkable wood carved wreath with roses from the artisans of Tyrol in northern Italy. Paired with some romantic wall hangings.
In order to show all the details I used the flash but that reflects in the lady's hair...
the little oval is under glass and it is mounted on velvet in an ornamental frame.
This came from a Dutch estate.
Back to my favorite wooden wreath with roses. Can you imagine that such a piece has been hand carved out of a single piece? Its bows are all gilded and that is about the only touch needed here.
Those long snowy winters in the mountains of Tyrol, northern Italy, do have their people produce quite some unique wood carvings. All done by hand!
Here you see the gilding on the bow...
Are those roses and leaves not perfectly done?
We always bought such a unique piece after doing consulting work in Germany.
Near my home town in The Netherlands, there is a Pilgrimage place, Kevelaer ←click link) and they have loads of wood carvings from Tyrol. Right now it would be a treat to go and see all the wooden Christmas villages they have.
Our foster daughter Anita, from Indonesia, did go with us to Kevelaer, in November of 2008 and she snapped so many photos of the Christmas villages...
Now let's turn to the Kitchenette... Between two pillars we could just place our toilet and the kitchenette is partly on top of the big pillar. They tapered down towards the top but the problem was, they were not straight-walled. Our cabinetmaker did however manage to make a cabinet against the tapering wall. Guess in all, we pretty well managed to build in everything that is necessary for a little Suite where guests can live on their own with complete privacy and even manage to have breakfast and coffee or tea independently; if needed.
A large fridge with freezer part is around the corner in the pantry. There is an Atag stainless steel sink with Danish Damixa faucet with hot and cold water. A water cooker and also a single hot plate is available and small microwave.
Plates, cups & saucers and glasses are in the cupboards.
Here you see the door to the corridor...
Paper towel holder and underneath are a mixer, cutlery box and also dish rack.
Table for two is nearby and it has a drawer under neath.
Glass shelves we built into the corners, using Danish Damixa chrome holders.
Towel holder is also a chrome Danish Damixa.
Round stainless steel Atag sink and the counter is Corian.
Coffee made can also be carried on the tray to the little bistro table and chairs, on the patio at the entrance...
Sure, tins with roses for coffee and cookies. Those I found in Kevelaer, Germany one time and they came home with us on the plane.
Goose egg with rose, on a stand.
Nice Rose Silver Napkin holder...
Okay, let's have a coffee or a tea and relax together!
Did you like our Rose Suite so far?
Dear husband Pieter literally went the extra mile for creating all this.
We have slept here the last couple of weeks while our bathroom got remodeled upstairs.
So it is convenient not only for guests but at times even for ourselves.
Have a lovely weekend!

{Our Rose Suite Living Room}

On October 12, I did show you Our Rose Suite Bedroom and now I like to show you our Rose Suite Living Room.
So please come in and make yourself at home... It is rainy outside so let's be cozy indoors. For those that missed the previous posts about Our Rose Suite, you find them listed below this post.
Welcome to our Rose Suite Living Room!
'Versailles Rouge' Rug, 5'6" x 8' from Horchow.com in 80% wool and 20% silk.
Chairs are in imitation suede, from Canada.
Same Spanish Volcano beige tile floor with pearl grout, as throughout the entire Rose Suite.
Coffee table is in solid oak, in a cherry stain.
This is the bay window area, under our kitchen.
Antique French oak beveled glass mirror.
That is the bedroom door...
Antique beveled glass French oak mirror from European Estate Sellers, Utah.
French Country Style Maison de Florette pendulum clock.
Our hand painted vintage French Country Style 'Literature' chest for magazines.
In the corner you see a French tiger oak dresser with beveled mirror that came from Vancouver, Canada.
This French Country Style tiger oak two piece dresser was shipped via Grey Hound by Sugar Barrel Antiques from Vancouver, Canada via Seatle, Chicago to Atlanta and on to Dublin.  For only $ 150.00 shipping. Incredible service and they did transport it first from Vancouver to Seatle... Highly recommendable company with great pieces of furniture.
A retired Dutch lady who also volunteers at the Lace Museum in Horst, my birth town, did crochet this fine table runner in a number 20 DMC thread.
The vase is Cranberry glass, or Gold Ruby (Rubino Oro) glass as it is called in Europe and it is made from molten glass with gold.
My first cousin Gon Van den Munckhof, did crochet this dachshund in memory of my dachshund Mauzie, even though she was a black and tan miniature.
Frame, received from colleague Luis Astier, a Basque from San Sebastian in Spain.
To the right is my younger sister Diny and me to the left...
Another gift from Luis Astier, given to us while working as consultants in Mexico.
Luis and I were elected best dressed man and woman during one of the Campbell Seminars, that Pieter gave in 1993 in Texas.
Luis and his wife Isabel used to live in Mexico but went back to Spain.
Antique French oak table with two chairs we bought in Macon, Georgia at Second Hand Rose Antiques Etc.
Overview from this corner...
Rose painting was a birthday gift from our extended family...
A Delft blue village from miniature homes given by KLM to their business class passengers and on their annual birthday of Royal Dutch Airlines another one gets added.
They neatly nest on this antique French tiger oak shelf.
Detail of our two-piece French tiger oak dresser with beveled mirror.
The hand crocheted filet lace is done by me...
Sweet angel, given by our German son and his wife.
It clings to a candle that is in a Royal Selangor pewter candle holder with French glass bobêche.
Royal Selangor is established in 1885 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We bought our candleholders in Singapore and gave some as a gift to friends and a vase to sister Diny.
Of course ROSES everywhere!
Silver stationery holder, letter opener/ruler and page marker in repoussé silver roses.
Cup & Saucer was a gift from a dear elderly lady friend and role model.
Sure, memories from old friends and new friends.
Again a beautiful hand crocheted filet lace table runner by the same Dutch lady.
They were precious gifts from hearts friend Ellie who came to stay with her husband at our Rose Suite.
You recognize the Train Case, painted by Rebecca from the blog: A Gathering Place
Detail...
Hope you liked the tour of our Rose Suite Living Room.
Next time I will show you the Rose Suite Kitchenette corner and some more details.

{Our Veranda}

As promised yesterday, where I did show you our Phalaenopsis orchid, I will show you Our Veranda. Please come inside and make yourself comfortable in our most sunny room of the house. We did buy our property by driving around one afternoon to see where the sun would be... We planned it very thoroughly. This is indeed the brightest and prettiest room in the house. The hand crocheted filet lace curtains are done by me. They hung in several homes before finally 'retiring' here. They only need to hang in there...
We do have a house full of memories. We both did not let our house being decorated by an interior designer, as we think a HOME should reflect our walk of life, our heritage. Adding some heirlooms and photos and that truly creates the soul of a home. Would love to hear your opinion or idea about the soul of your home; please leave me a comment and if you have more questions, I will reply. For generating an email reply please click 'subscribe by email' below the comment box. That will generate the email whenever I reply to any comment!
French Country Style solid oak furniture with Fleur de Lys cotton and viscose fabric.
Even the wool rug shows Fleur de Lys...
Below this post you can read about My French Connection!
That door to the left leads to our kitchen.
Another lovely orchid...
Many sandel wood carvings that we received from Pond's India Ltd. while working for them as consultants.
Our window sills we had custom made from white Corian.
The door leads to the steps and the tiled walk way to our gazebo...
We got all 92 Delft blue Dutch houses from Royal Dutch Airlines.
Each year they add another one for their anniversary of years they've been in the air.
We got very often an upgrade into business class; with house!
The last Delftware houses I bought on eBay since we retired from consulting.
This Hindu statue is from Bali, Indonesia and made of ebony wood.
A view from the other  side...
You also see the brass laser cut, polished and lacquered window decorations.
In the door are the four seasons of a tree...
To the right is my own design of a brass mushroom family, see below post under related links.
My private collection vintage Lampe Berger, rose vases and pill boxes...
Blue is the color for our veranda.
The bird cage hanging is from Yogjakarta, Indonesia...
Detail of the crocheted filet lace curtain, the Delft blue houses and my own design of a brass happy mushroom family. See link below.
Why don't you have a seat and have a tea with us?
Overlooking the pond area...
The huge evergreen oak tree provides nice shade.
Now you look at the living room door...
The large framed blue silk batik birds are from Indonesia, see link below.
Above the blue silk batik is a bird done on rice paper, from India.
You can read about it in a link below post as well.
Another Balinese ebony wood Hindu statue.
Also a vintage Lampe Berger with Angel Cameo.
Blogger Friend Celia M. High Heeled Life & Resilientista does have the other one...
She loves angels as much as I  do!
Healthy house plant in solid French oak planter box.
That makes the exotic and tropical look more complete with all our memories from countries we worked in.
The leather deer was a gift from India.
The huge iron wood statue is Hanoman from the Hindu Ramayana play.
This was given to husband Pieter for his first consulting work in Indonesia.
Framed silk embroidered birds from husband Pieter's trip to China with People to People Citizen Ambassador Program.
Solid French oak corner cabinet with beveled glass.
Rayon fleur de lys tassel...
Fleur de Lys vintage Lampe Berger and angel frame, see link below post about more details.
We almost came full circle.
More blue and here you see the first and original map of New Netherland as Dutch Colony with New Amsterdam, now New York.
Full circle...
Have a seat...
A peak through the door into our kitchen...
Hope you enjoyed our veranda.
Any questions are welcome and I will reply.
Click below the comment box on 'subscribe by email' and you get the reply also emailed to you.
Provided you have your email setting such that you do receive mail...
It was a pleasure showing you some more about our walk of life.
A warm welcome also to all my new readers!
