The FIGHT of Growing Grass in Subtropical Georgia/USA

As most of you know, both husband Pieter and I got born with dirt under our fingernails... being the son and/or daughter of a professional market gardener. Growing fruits and vegetables, delivering to the auction for supplying grocery stores.
So... that made us knowledgeable for starting a GARDEN; right?
We had moved into our newly built home in November of 1990...
NOT SO!
Here I am on August 11, 1991 looking in horror at all the soil that got washed out from heavy rain, such as often in summer in subtropical Georgia.
We just got back on August 9, from work and living in Indonesia...
WELCOME HOME!
So after pulling weeds for one day and Pieter working with his weed eater, it was me on the shovel to fill wheelbarrows. Yes, we had two of them!
Pieter in turn wheeled them to the spot for filling it in.
Where did I shovel all that dirt?
Under the newly built house, where after opening the metal door in our staircase area I screamed because we were looking at a mountain of dirt.
Yes, our 'not-so-great-contractor' left it all there and just built the foundation around.
We dug out a big section as we needed it desperately here and later in 1995 we dug out more.
In 2004, husband Pieter dug out the remaining 60 tons (!) for filling in on the left side of our garden and constructing the Rose Suite. See posts below.
Oh, life can be so very glamorous!
Did wear my new bikini while at the shovel beneath the hot/humid home in the basement...
Bikini had arrived in the mail.
This was it, a Gottex bikini with a silk cover up...
Haha, nice and glamorous work uniform don't you think so?
Easy for jumping right under the shower after the day is over and rinsing it all off.
Pieter did the heavy pushing of the wheelbarrow and filling in of the dirt, while having his implant lens out of place... As got diagnosed in the morning. He went next day, after this big job, for the re-positioning of his lens under a light anesthesia.
Rest of the day relaxing... (Pieter!).
On August 20, we put a mixture of spent compost with peat moss between our azaleas as each tropical rain shower washed out the dirt. Hoping they will grow and spread out faster and hold on to the soil!
Oh, on May 16, the previous time off from our work/living in Indonesia (we were there two months at the time...) we both had laid these cross tires in the spots we wanted.
A company that took care of our garden, had laid them and not to our liking.
Yes, those suckers are heavy but we managed.
That lantern now was in the wrong spot and Pieter moved that at another later time ...
So much to handle in the four weeks we got off from work in Indonesia!
On August 28, we went again to a certain low spot near a larger creek behind the street where we used to live. We dug up nice patches of grass to fill in the bare spots where everything got washed out from heavy rains...
Our heavy duty wheelbarrow ready for a ride!
Pieter with his heavy duty spade!
Yes, we used our Mercury Sable wagon very intense, after bringing it back home from working/living in Italy...
It got cleaned up well for carrying our suitcases again on September 1, when we would fly back to work and living in Indonesia... 😉
The wagon could then rest for two months at the parking lot of Atlanta Airport...
Grabbing those sods by their sprites and helping unload.
We always worked as a team!
Unloading some right at the trouble spot...
HOPING they will stand their ground this time!
Yes, the lawn is still covered with straw in order to avoid further erosion...
Living on such a steep slope for sure was not easy to start growing grass!
But with perseverance we managed.

Back into the Past in Rural North Georgia

Coming back from our visit to Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, north Georgia I made a stop here at a crossing I'd passed in the morning...
HAD to capture this!
Don't you love the tractor?
Even if it had no engine...
Right on the crossing with Yellow Creek Rd and Conns Creek Rd in Ball Ground, Georgia
You can see the border line with the State of Tennessee above left and North Carolina above right.  The State of Alabama to the left... South Carolina to the right.
It was about one hour north of Marietta.
We had looked forward to finally visiting in person the Bernhards German Bakery
We always get their fresh baked Spelt bread shipped out to us, sliced and ready for stocking up our freezer and enjoying fresh.
They also have a restaurant but 'Danielle' did not allow us to sit inside... so we took our goodies back to our Hyatt Regency Suites Northwest Atlanta (border of Marietta), only about 8.5 km down the road, where we enjoyed them.
My Coconut Bearclaw was not 'American' sweet so I could sin for once and it was very good.
So was Pieter's Spinach/Cheese Croissant!
As per executive order our Georgia Governor had lifted Covid restrictions...
Unfortunately, many cafés, restaurants and others in the tourism industry have suffered way too long!

Our Visit to Gibbs Gardens at Ball Ground, North Georgia

Having seen lovely spring bulb photos on FB from a local friend, I started exploring this special Botanical Garden in North Georgia: Gibbs Gardens
Avoiding the Easter weekend due to the crowds on the road as well as here at the Gardens, we booked a ticket on line for April 8.
Very easy, having our Senior Admission on our iPhone... we were in!
At the welcome center we were greeted by the friendly resident kitty Spot and he was easy to cuddle with.
Fed and cared for by the workers and during winter when they close, he moves downstairs inside the welcome center and is being fed daily by workers that need to tend the 220 acres of garden...
We started out walking around.
Lovely setting and plenty of Japanese maples to admire
However cloudy all day, we had NO rain!
18℃ or 64.4℉
There were PLENTY of benches for resting and taking in the beauty of the gardens!
Plenty of tulips were still blooming
In the Japanese Garden, don't know what the sign above reads...
Lovely Cherry Blossoms!
This cherry tree is budding out...
We just leisurely walked our 4.3 km or 2.67 mi
The elevation ranked from 400 m or 1,312 ft to 550 m or 1,804 ft
Rolling hills with views from different heights!
Last year they ranked 2nd amongst 'BEST AMERICAN BOTANICAL GARDENS'
This all began in 1980 as a private estate of 300 acres or 121.4 ha and after 30 years it became a world-class public garden!
Back to our Hyatt Regency Suites Atlanta Northwest... We enjoyed two free award nights; one of the perks when staying with one good line of hotels!

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Both of us woke up well rested at our Hyatt Regency Suites and after our own prepared breakfast, we went on our way...

It would be a one hour 20 minute drive to our destination.

The weather was foggy and very cloudy with some drizzle...

By 14:15 we arrived at our destination of BLUE RIDGE SCENIC RAILWAY

I'd ordered our tickets on line and we had to present proof of purchase at the ticket office...

Ticket office right around the corner.

A very small mountain village and our biggest challenge was for finding a parking space.

Luckily it was on a Sunday, so we could park behind a medical office where parking was prohibited from Monday thru Friday...

It was a little walking distance and going back, uphill it was more of a challenge for Pieter.

The 1 hour 21 minutes were correct and I was glad I selected the Interstate, not all the way but biggest part of this 129 kilometer stretch or 80 mile.

Here I stand in front of the very long BLUE RIDGE SCENIC RAILWAY

We had to walk to wagon 549... A 2 hour express train ride without a layover in Copperhill, Tennessee, due to COVID

There was no class difference in this train and for boarding we had to walk quite a stretch!
Somewhere in the middle of that stretch, they had a concession stand.
Pieter was a happy man here at 15:08 with his hot coffee!

Most Railways follow a river...
Fall colors were just starting out.

The river is again visible below.
It was a very rural area!

Crossing the river...

Across from the river we stopped in Copperhill, Tennessee but no layover due to COVID.
So sad for restaurants and shops that depend on the influx of tourists!
Yes, in times past copper was the main reason for this railway.

We started out in Blue Ridge on 241 Depot Street in the state of Georgia.
Across the river we arrived in Copperhill, Tennessee.

While using the app Relive and having my portable battery, I noticed that at times there was no signal.
But the way over was not the same route as the way back, there are different rails.

One such things that indicate that there was no signal is this weird sharp V-shape that we did not ride!
Guess due to the absence of any signal, the dots got connected a few seconds later but erroneously.

Our Relive video

The total was not more than 39.8 km or 24.7 mi and the average speed was 16.8 km/h or 10.4 mi/h.
Just outside of Copperhill, Tennesse and back on Georgia territory we passed through an extreme poor area. We got told by the guide that was in each wagon (talking loudly about what we were passing etc.) that there was a kind of a community vegetable garden.
Volunteers worked it and the actual crop would be divided among the poor families...
As from my childhood, we do recall that often a railway will pass by the back of homes and their tiny gardens or whatever. Often a lot of rubbish was visible too. The front from the street might have looked better... but not the back of those homes!

It was an okay railway experience but fell short in comparison with the previous one we took in Bryson City, North Carolina.
There is no service on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and you get seated without any seat assignment.
Loud due to children and kind of noisy was one of the biggest differences we noticed.
But still we feel bad for that region and they MUST draw tourists for pouring in some more cash before any update or improvement can be made.
Just an oversight for Blue Ridge Scenic Railway tarifs

Before dark, we safely got back to our cozy Hyatt Regency Suites Atlanta Northwest for our supper and a good night rest. It was well chosen, for this Blue Ridge Scenic Railway adventure.

Flying Over Our Home and Campbell Mushroom Plant that Pieter Designed

Our local pilot Fred Houston, was so kind to fly both of us on September 27, 1986 above our home and on to the Campbell Mushroom Plant, that Pieter designed. See link below post.
Husband Pieter with pilot Fred Houston at our local Dublin Airport.
Yes, we also did arrive at this very airport, on April 23, 1983 with the Learjet from Campbell Soup, coming from Camden, New Jersey.
Photos can be seen in post from 4th of July Speech, given by my husband Pieter, below this post.
Me with Fred Houston...
Ready to get inside...
Pieter took this photo from me in the back seat and Pieter joined Fred up front...
Take off, from the airport and you immediately saw how green Dublin, Georgia is!
Lots and lots of trees.
Homes almost completely hidden, between the trees.
The local airport was not far from our home...
The tall water tower, from Springdale Park, is visible and in-between the big pond to the bottom is the Claxton Dairy Road
Right corner is the Claxton Dairy Road, and to the left is Brookwood Drive and center (left and right from wing support)  shows the ponds of the Brookington Apartments
Approaching the area where we lived...
Coming closer into our subdivision...
Our home is just in that curve of the side road, which you see to the left...
Above Brookhaven Drive now, and to the right you can see the creek that flows under bridge.
Regency Circle ends into Broohaven Drive and to the left you see the beginning of Fairmont Road.
Here the plane is right in front of our home; seen in the center of photo!
Even better visible here in the center...
Still visible in the center but we are already pulling away...
Brookhaven Drive is seen to the right and Fairmont Road was off Regency Circle
Just one of the several subdivisions within the city limits.
Here our home is invisible in the center as we pull away.
Our neighbors had a pool, that is visible below our 'hidden' home.
Earlier I mentioned the bridge over the creek that was flowing underneath Brookhaven Drive.
To the left at the top, it is still visible here and the rest is just a kind of low and wet area where no homes got build.
Pulling out towards Highway 80. The big spot on the center is a parking lot and shops.
Buildings from the Veterans Administration Hospital become visible to the left and also the local hospital in the back, left from center.
Now you see the compound of the Veterans Administration Hospital and in the back Fairview Hospital
Here we're now past the local Fairview Hospital, where at present time lots of other medical office buildings have been added!
Now we fly near Interstate 16, which runs past Dublin with several exits.
From the coast in Savannah, it crosses through Macon and then bends into Interstate 75 North towards Atlanta.
Interstate 75 South, runs South into Florida.
Now we approach the site where you see the Campbell Mushroom Plant, that Pieter designed for them.
You can read more about that in my previous writing, see below this post.
Turning in a bit closer...
There were 21 growing rooms, seen behind the water tower.
Here you clearly see the enormous stock on wheat straw, being used for making compost.
A water tower as usual, that is very unique for the USA.
This angle gives an even better view of all the wheat straw stock.
Yes, this mushroom farm purchased all the wheat straw available between Dublin and Savannah, a stretch of 2 hours driving distance on Interstate 16!
The compost slab is in the center and then the pasteurization tunnels, red roof more to the left and in the end the growing rooms, all the way to the left.
This location was very close to Interstate 16, so transport by the large, cooled trucks was easy!
Back to the airport and almost at touch down...
Both of us were very grateful to this kind pilot for showing us, from above where we lived.
It was now a more complete picture for family and friends in The Netherlands, to see and better understand where we lived and worked in the New World!

Has any of you seen the location where you reside, from above?

Just now, October 13, 2022, Fred Houston—Dublin veteran earns 50 years of flying award:
Congratulations Fred—so well earned!
