Already on June 10, Pieter photographed our Brugmansia species 'Angel's Trumpet' with its very first blossoms. Usually they continue to bloom all through summer. This year however, because of the drought, we've waited in vain - nothing has bloomed after these two. Sorry, not much to show but this is it for 2011. We got these beauties from Logee's. This Andean native is sweetly fragrant.
Its botanical name is: Datura inoxia var. quinquecuspida. Common names: devil's trumpet, downy thornapple, toloache, angel's trumpet. Family: Solanaceae (nightshade Family).
Since the extreme heat is over with, the Datura Angel's Trumpet has done her very best to please us. She will till frost and according to the weather forecast that will not be in November... Let's see how these sweetly fragrant blooms develop from a yellow bud into an almost pure white beauty.
Taken from below... I had to really bend backwards.
Those buds appear yellow at first and then turn into white.
Kind of folded together still. Do you see the splotches of white? Below you see them even better.
They grow as pot plants and will be moved inside the greenhouse once the frost is coming.
Our garden feels so relieved after the two scorching hot months... Let's hope things will look better in the spring.
