Polish Mushroom Scientist Friend Tadeusz Bukowski & P.J.C. Vedder in Polish

Over the many years, husband Pieter has made many scientist friends all over the world.
One very special friend was Tadeusz Bukowski from Warsaw, Poland
Tadeusz Bukowski
PIECZARKI or MUSHROOMS
To my dear Friend P.J.C. Vedder with thanks for his help
T. Bukowski, January 7, 1967
This was still during Communism, with all its restrictions for such scientists!
He pointed to some pages and he also listed Vedder as one of his references on page 140
Underlined: Znany praktyk holenderski Vedder... The well-known practical Vedder...
For people, living under Socialism, the simplest form of book publishing/printing was at a very poor level...
Sad to see this, as the work by the writer is equally the same but he/she never could achieve the quality publications as we knew in the West.
Husband Pieter met him first at the ISMS VI Congress in 1965, in Wageningen and Amsterdam
Under POLAND T. Bukowski, is listed right at the top of page 572 in the above book from ISMS VI
The 3rd line is my husband P.J.C. Vedder listed, he then worked still at the Research Center.
~
T. Bukowski did visit husband Pieter's Mushroom Training Center in Horst, The Netherlands.
During one of those visits, right in the corridor when viewing some growing rooms, he got unwell and Pieter could catch him before he passed out.
Pieter went with him to his then primary care doctor van Remundt in Horst.
Turned out he had some heart problems...

In the 1968-7 edition of the Dutch CHAMPIGNONCULTUUR is Polen mentioned.
Polen is Dutch for Poland. Already in the 12th Century, Polish noblemen got introduced to mushrooms, during their travels to France. They introduced the French cuisine to Poland and with that came the mushroom. In 1824 the first mushroom growing in Poland is being mentioned and also in 1841 in a horticulture book. The 1st book that totally got written about the mushroom growing arrived relatively late in 1926 by Felix Teodorowisz.

And of course from the Institute in Skierniewice hails also Magister Th. Bukowski who played such an important role in Poland in the growing of mushrooms. A lot of Dutch mushroom growers will have met him at the International Congres in 1965 in Amsterdam during the connecting excursion. He wrote a cultivation manual "Pieczarki" (Mushrooms) which has already had some reprints.
The Dutch Champignoncultuur 1970-10 published the above about Mushroom Growing in Poland.
After the war, three books on mushroom culture were published in Poland, written by N. Krusze, K. Siekierzynski and T. Bukowski respectively. Poland had at the time in 1970, 660 mushroom growers, united in the organization of horticultural cooperatives.
Remember, this still was during Communism!
In August 1977, Fred C. Atkins writes about: Bukowski in Poland; a Darmycel Guide; and an International Journal? You can click for Pdf from ISMS
One of the world's dedicated Mushroom Men!
Both of us met Tadeusz Bukowski at the CVV–Cooperative Venlo Auction (Now ZON the Royal Cooperative Growers Association Southeast Netherlands UA), in Grubbenvorst on the Dutch Mushroom Days, May 29, 1986.
Again at the ISMS XII in Braunschweig, Germany in 1987, where he gave a lecture in German, with M. Gapinski, K. Sobieralski and M. Siwulski.

Our last one from 1989...
With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Tadeusz & Leonarda Bukowski
We both don't know what happened after that...
~
Maybe the Polish mushroom person Krystian Szudyga from Warsaw would know more...?
We last ran into Krystian, in May of 2000, in the train on our way to the XIIth ISMS Congres in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
Krystian Szudyga happened to ride the very same train as we did, and we did chat a little.
Pieter wanted to attend this Congres for seeing one more time many of his scientist friends, before it would be too late...
At least, in 1980, Poland also got its own language book about Modern Mushroom Growing by husband P.J.C. Vedder

Tzvetana Rantcheva from Bulgaria and Chubritsa Spice

From several ISMS Congresses, Pieter got to know lots of international scientists.
It was always hardest for scientists from behind the iron curtain, from the communist countries that is... to travel internationally.
Pictured here is Tzvetana Rantcheva from Bulgaria, with Pieter to the left and to the right of her is Vitkov, who also visited us at the Mushroom farm of Fungi del Montello in Italy.
Here, Pieter is to the left and next to him is Stefan Lissitzov and Vitkov from Bulgaria.
Both photos are from August 29, 1989 and the Berlin Wall had not yet come down... marking the end of the Communist era for Eastern Europe.
Tzvetana Rantcheva was one of the scientists that lectured at the 1969 ISMS Congress in Hamburg and Pieter knows her for a long time.
International Society of Mushroom Science
Pieter did receive one of her 1971 publications, for adding to his library...
Dear Mr. Vedder
Many kind regards to all colleagues in your station. I hope this booklet will enrich your library.
Your Bulgarian friend and colleague,
Rantcheva
Due to Tzvetana Rantcheva's many restrictions for living and working in a Communist country as Bulgaria was, Pieter helped co-author her book...
She did mail it to us from Bulgaria, and we received it in June of 1986...
To Petter Vedder
with respect and gratitude
April, 1986         Rantcheva
Sofia, Bulgaria
(well, writing in cyrillic and managing the Roman alphabet as well, is quite challenging!)
Their paper quality was the poorest one...
Sadly so, but she meticulously gave credit to all of Pieter's photos!
Contrary to most others, regardless of all their privileges of living in the free and modern world, that only stole photos and big parts of text, without ever giving due credit.
They think that plagiarism went out of the window?!
Both of us felt humbled and touched by being able to help a scientist from Communist Bulgaria out...

While visiting us at work in Italy, Tvetana Rantcheva gifted us a hand made wooden box, filled with special mixed spices and herbs from Bulgaria.
Not very large but I've kept it all those years with lots of sentiment... empty for years now.
Finally last year we both got to visit her country, Bulgaria, even though not her city of Sofia.
Queen of Bulgarian spices: summer savoury (chubritsa) click link
It was special receiving her Bulgarian Christmas cards...
Sadly we lost contact since our life in Italy.

My Most Awkward Moments as Last Minute Substitute Interpreter at ISMS Congress

During a sight viewing afternoon tour, the wife of the I.S.M.S. Congress organizer in Braunschweig, Germany told me that the  Professional Interpreter could not be present... She said, but you can help us out! Sure I am fluent in German but...
What was I thinking when saying yes to translate the speech from Madam Burgomaster into English, Jacques Delmas would translate my English into French... both of us standing behind Madam Burgomaster at the ancient City Hall.
Here I am, to the right and Pieter center AFTER the disaster... YES!
Without any script and an obvious inexperienced Madam Burgomaster, that went on for about half a page. My train of thoughts, trying to memorize + translate could not keep up with that.
Back then, I did not have the courage for stepping forward and tapping that lady on her shoulder and saying: 'Please no more than a couple of sentences at a time, otherwise I loose track!'
And all that, in front af some 500 International participants of the ISMS Congress... wanting to just vanish!
International Society of Mushroom Science
That was on Monday, September 21, 1987.
Husband Pieter with Walter Huhnke whom I mentioned in my previous post: 1967 Pieter at Max Planck Society Germany's Most Successful Research Organization
Friday evening, September 24, felt more relaxed... nothing to interpret here!
Just enjoying a formal Banquet with the other participants without any lectures or speeches.

But I survived!

1967 Pieter at Max Planck Society Germany's Most Successful Research Organization

Fond memories of the old days when Pieter visited the Max Planck Society in Hamburg, Germany.
Pieter did his internship with Professor R. von Sengbusch.
The Max Planck Society, Hamburg was also involved in Mushroom Research.
Some important names in Mushroom Science are:
Gerda Fritsche; Walter Huhnke; Gertraud Lemke; Otto Till
Pieter is seen to the left, while Professor Reinhold Von Sengbusch is giving some Fatherly advice to a young Pieter.
~
Professor Von Sengbusch who also did the breeding for the famous Senga Sengana strawberries, named after him!
Even my Dad grew them, when I was a child, and we had women coming in to harvest them. Fond memories...
~
Link for this text just click Strawberries
Pieter with his back towards us and to the right is Ferdinand Dohme, who later became a large mushroom grower in Germany. We had dinner with him, his wife and son at Regensburg's, Conference - see link below.

Most of these names would be listed over the decades at the I.S.M.S. Congresses held all over the world.
I.S.M.S. for: The International Society for Mushroom Science.

Pieter just stated that back in those days, he managed to travel to foreign countries on his own and NO GPS yet!
How in the world did we ever manage without?!

Communist Hungary with Husband Pieter Part VI - Gorsium and Old Market Halls Budapest

From the Beethoven Museum at Martonvásár, we now arrived at this old Roman town...
A fascinating archaeological site is located in Gorsium.
Husband Pieter pondering about being back in time, into a Roman era...
Here lay the Roman settlement of Gorsium, which operated for three centuries and where a magnificent palace stood, an amphitheater and a cemetery.
Lung-Chi Wu, me and husband Pieter
It was quite a transformation for being way back in time!
Hungary has lots of thermal baths, so the Romans already used the warm water!
In Summer, events are now organized here
There also was a museum that we visited and we had lunch there.
At 15:15 we went back to Budapest with one bus, the other group did split off for an extended stay at Lake Balaton.
Hungary has a lot to offer and we must say that the Congress did include a lot of culture for getting to know this beautiful country.
We got off at the Gellért Hotel in Budapest by 16:20 and since it was very foggy, it would be already dark by 17:00.
At 13:17 in this video you will see the Great Market Hall, Budapest, just click through from my Pinterest.
With Pieter's Campbell Soup colleagues together we went to the Great Market Hall and got to see the information about edible and non-edible fungi.
That was quite interesting.
A perfect day's ending for all four of us!
On our way back we ate authentic Hungarian Goulash soup and with a taxi from the Gellért hotel we went all four back to the Congress Center.

We had to rise again at 6:00... stay tuned!

Thanks for your visit and comment.

Communist Hungary with Husband Pieter Part V - Martonvásár Beethoven Museum

After our dinner the previous night and the 3 hour ride in the bus back to the Congress Center in Budapest we had to rise early again at 6:30 because we would depart by bus at 8:00.
We went to MARTONVÁSÁR to the BEETHOVEN MUSEUM
Quite a Ludwig van Beethoven statue!
Beethoven stayed several times in the 18th century country house in
Martonvásár
When he went to visit the noble family Brunswick.
Concerts take place here In July.
Under an old poplar on the island in the lake, Beethoven sat to compose...
Ludwig van Beethoven's writing...
Here was also an agricultural research institute.
Lung-Chi Wu sent us this picture with both of us in it.

Stay tuned for the next stop...
