{Our 6 Vintage Tobacco Pipes and Cheroot Holder}

Guess most of you have had a husband, Dad or even Granddad who smoked a pipe at some time in his life. My husband Pieter did use several different pipes. Therefore we still have a collection of 6 such Vintage Pipes and also a Meerschaum Cheroot Holder. Do you know what that is? Look at the 2nd one from the right on this teak wood pipe rack below...
The Delft Polychrome TOEBACK (tobacco) jar is a gift from my Mother-in-law on our wedding day, together with the Delft Polychrome ashtray in which a Swiss horn pipe with stem chain and silver nickel windcap is laying. The mouth piece is probably made out of buffalo horn.
The windcap was used to avoid sparks when working in straw or hay.
Hand crocheted DMC doily is done by me... will show that later...
Here the teak wood pipe rack again, in front of our leather books.
The Swiss horn pipe with stem chain and silver nickel windcap is shown here opened up.
To the left you see Big Ben Pipo wtih Ebonite mouthpiece.
Here my husband Pieter is smoking that very Big Ben Pipo...
Those were his writing years when he published most of his books.
He quit smoking when he turned 50!
Big Ben Pipo nature with Ebonite mouthpiece (click links).
Big Ben is a brand of Gubbels The Pipe Manufacturer. The company also has a FB Fan Page under Gubbels Pipes. All the way to the bottom, below post you find a link about this company.
Big Ben Dutch pipes original Bruyere with accrylic mouthpiece.
Bruyere is French for Briar Burl from the white heath tree, Erica arborea L., a Mediterranean Lignotuber.
It also is used for pen making.
This is a Silver Inlaid Pipe that belonged to Pieter's Dad. Unfortunately its mouthpiece is broken...
This must be from the mid 19th Century and we no longer can ask questions about this family heirloom.
Incredible detail goes into such Silver Inlaid pipe. Wish I could observe them doing this intricate work of art!
Had to take this pipe out on the balcony in daylight...
Incredible detail all the way! No wonder that a FB Fan Page is called: Tobacco Pipe Artistory!
This is the  Meerschaum Cheroot, sigar holder, also from husband Pieter's Dad.
A real piece of ART! This is made out of Meerschaum (German) or Sea Foam in English. Click on link for interesting info in English with photos about these most refined and skilful pieces of labor with exact details. After World War I, cigar holders were no longer used so that shows that this must be an antique piece as well.
The appearance of the Falcon pipe with its white aluminium stem, dark bowl and black mouthpiece was for the 1950's a most modern experience.
Read more about it here: The revolution of the system pipe
Falcon Algiers Bowl
Big Ben Leather covered pipe and Meerschaum lined.
In order to smoke a pipe, you of course do need special Tobacco.
Pieter still keeps two tins from 35 years ago!
One he received from his daughter Liz for Saint Nicholas...
Liz wrote in reverse: Van (from) Pint en (and) Siet instead of Sint en Piet...
Do you still own such vintage and antique Pipes or tobacco tins?
Lots of interest in this subject...

{More of my Handmade Filet Lace Embroidered Angels}

Just like in my earlier post about my Handmade Filet Lace Embroidered Angels for our bathroom, I like to show you more in detail the ones from our guest bathroom. They are made by hand, using the French DMC thread for filling up the machine made net for creating this Filet Lace Embroidery.
This is the outside of our guest bathroom window.
It is the best way for showing these Handmade Filet Lace Embroidered Angels.
For privacy we actually don't need any window treatment as it is quite high and nobody can look through those windows!
But it certainly does add a personal touch of my love for angels and roses...
The first photo I took on June 12, and this one is from August 21, 2012 when the huge fig tree still stood behind the vinyl fence.
We never could reach those figs; only the birds could! So it got the death penalty and is no longer growing there.
This photo is from March 25, of this year and now our bathroom window, to the left, is also visible with its Filet Lace Embroidered Angels (you can see that previous post below).
Did you notice that our home also badly needed to be pressure washed and painted?
Well, the first photo showed you that we DID take care of that, as well as the one below.
Two painters worked for 3 weeks on the pressure wash + painting and on Monday, June 3rd the job got completed.
That's your sneak preview... Quite a  difference or not?!
The guest bathroom angels are a bit larger than the ones in our bathroom but I opted for two different patterns.
This is the pattern I used and I just mirrored it.
Again a pattern that was in the book: Hemels Handwerkboek by Marie Van den Berk-Mertens
The above link will bring you to Amazon.com
Hemels Handwerkbook is Dutch for Heavenly Handworkbook
Even if this book is in Dutch, the patterns and the photos speak for itself and it has many patterns listed.
Hope you enjoyed our guest bathroom angels and the sneak preview of the exterior painting job.
You will get to see more to come but first more renovations inside.
Stay tuned...

{My Hand Made Filet Lace Embroidered Angels}

  • Yesterday you could see a shadow of an angel, reflected in our high gloss bathroom cabinet vanity.
  • Today I want to show you more of our window treatment, that I made by hand.

  • Getting a good photo of these angels is about as hard as making the curtain...
  • You can see the balcony's balustrade to the right and the white vinyl fence below.

  • Such a window treatment is very hard to capture on camera but at least I tried!
  • Here I've hand made two angels facing each other in filet lace embroidery.

  • This is the machine made net on which I did the Filet Lace Embroidery.
  • There is a crocheted edging all around for being able to fasten it on the tiny brass nails, that are painted white.
  • Very easy for laundering and putting it straight out from the washing machine back onto those brass nails.
  • Never do they get rust stains because of the brass.

  • Even from the outside it is very hard to capture as it is way up high and behind a vinyl fence.
  • So I had to zoom in, standing below on the ground.
  • There is a screen in front of the window, that makes the filet lace embroidery look less clear.
  • Our home will get a pressure wash and a new painting coat in May; that will also take care of the screen as they have to come off.

  • hemels handwerkbook
  • heavenly handworkbook

  • This book is in Dutch but language doesn't really matter for following the patterns.

Is anyone of you also working with Filet Lace Embroidery?

{Our Rose Suite Living Room}

On October 12, I did show you Our Rose Suite Bedroom and now I like to show you our Rose Suite Living Room.
So please come in and make yourself at home... It is rainy outside so let's be cozy indoors. For those that missed the previous posts about Our Rose Suite, you find them listed below this post.
Welcome to our Rose Suite Living Room!
'Versailles Rouge' Rug, 5'6" x 8' from Horchow.com in 80% wool and 20% silk.
Chairs are in imitation suede, from Canada.
Same Spanish Volcano beige tile floor with pearl grout, as throughout the entire Rose Suite.
Coffee table is in solid oak, in a cherry stain.
This is the bay window area, under our kitchen.
Antique French oak beveled glass mirror.
That is the bedroom door...
Antique beveled glass French oak mirror from European Estate Sellers, Utah.
French Country Style Maison de Florette pendulum clock.
Our hand painted vintage French Country Style 'Literature' chest for magazines.
In the corner you see a French tiger oak dresser with beveled mirror that came from Vancouver, Canada.
This French Country Style tiger oak two piece dresser was shipped via Grey Hound by Sugar Barrel Antiques from Vancouver, Canada via Seatle, Chicago to Atlanta and on to Dublin.  For only $ 150.00 shipping. Incredible service and they did transport it first from Vancouver to Seatle... Highly recommendable company with great pieces of furniture.
A retired Dutch lady who also volunteers at the Lace Museum in Horst, my birth town, did crochet this fine table runner in a number 20 DMC thread.
The vase is Cranberry glass, or Gold Ruby (Rubino Oro) glass as it is called in Europe and it is made from molten glass with gold.
My first cousin Gon Van den Munckhof, did crochet this dachshund in memory of my dachshund Mauzie, even though she was a black and tan miniature.
Frame, received from colleague Luis Astier, a Basque from San Sebastian in Spain.
To the right is my younger sister Diny and me to the left...
Another gift from Luis Astier, given to us while working as consultants in Mexico.
Luis and I were elected best dressed man and woman during one of the Campbell Seminars, that Pieter gave in 1993 in Texas.
Luis and his wife Isabel used to live in Mexico but went back to Spain.
Antique French oak table with two chairs we bought in Macon, Georgia at Second Hand Rose Antiques Etc.
Overview from this corner...
Rose painting was a birthday gift from our extended family...
A Delft blue village from miniature homes given by KLM to their business class passengers and on their annual birthday of Royal Dutch Airlines another one gets added.
They neatly nest on this antique French tiger oak shelf.
Detail of our two-piece French tiger oak dresser with beveled mirror.
The hand crocheted filet lace is done by me...
Sweet angel, given by our German son and his wife.
It clings to a candle that is in a Royal Selangor pewter candle holder with French glass bobêche.
Royal Selangor is established in 1885 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We bought our candleholders in Singapore and gave some as a gift to friends and a vase to sister Diny.
Of course ROSES everywhere!
Silver stationery holder, letter opener/ruler and page marker in repoussé silver roses.
Cup & Saucer was a gift from a dear elderly lady friend and role model.
Sure, memories from old friends and new friends.
Again a beautiful hand crocheted filet lace table runner by the same Dutch lady.
They were precious gifts from hearts friend Ellie who came to stay with her husband at our Rose Suite.
You recognize the Train Case, painted by Rebecca from the blog: A Gathering Place
Detail...
Hope you liked the tour of our Rose Suite Living Room.
Next time I will show you the Rose Suite Kitchenette corner and some more details.
