Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland where Pieter stayed when Skiing

Church of St. Laurentius in Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland near Davos around ten o'clock in the morning.
This is the little town, where Pieter did stay while skiing...
Remember, Pieter was an avid photographer, so he also tried this one in black & white...
What do you like best?
Church originally dates from 1290 but got rebuild several times.
Walking around the Church; but be careful in the snow!
These slides got scanned by me in December of 2013 and one has to keep in mind that they went THREE TIMES in a container across the Atlantic Ocean. Not so good for their gelatin coating as it gets affected by moisture.
But I'm very pleased with what I ended up with, all the way from 1963...
Mainly homes are build in wood.
Just a cozy little town with spectacular views.
After a fire in 1735 all wooden homes in the city center had to be rebuild...
This is the former City Hall that is now being used as an Inn
'Gasthaus zum Rathaus' is written in 'Old German' which we still had to study in Highschool, is not easy to read!
Gasthaus Madrisa is another typical Swiss Inn.
Madrisa is a mountain section.
This was the 2nd home from the family Kuhn, where Pieter stayed when going to Switzerland for advising them in mushroom growing and having some time for skiing or sight seeing.
You notice how much wood is being stacked under the balcony to the side and behind buildings?
The saying was: 'A true Swiss has wood at his doorstep'
It also created of course a tremendous fire hazard...
Saas Village Square... To the right is the Post Office in this photo but it got closed in 2010 I read.
A closeup of the house on the left in the above photo. A typical Saas Prättigauer home.
Wish I could read what all is written at the very top.
Some locals would know!
Geraniums make it look so romantic...
This was the 'Postbureau Saas'

Stay tuned for more...

Pieter Skiing in Switzerland

Yes, through the Kuhn family, husband Pieter got to learn skiing in Switzerland.

Mainly he went to visit Kuhn for giving mushroom growing advice, during the Easter holidays as that is still excellent ski weather.

Here Pieter is on the slopes in Saas, in the Davos, Switzerland region.

Pieter really enjoyed skiing!
With sunshine, as is evident from the glare...
Of course, Pieter did get some lessons at the Schweizer Skischule or Swiss Ski School
An oversight from the area...
Together with his friend Jan Keijsers who was the architect for his practical training college...
Lessons learned, now up on the slopes... using again the T-bar lift.
Nice views!
Excellent skiing area
Relaxing after skiing and reading in German
Hans Jörg Kuhn (the son of Jörg) took this photo of Pieter wearing his silk ascot...
Stay tuned for more from Switzerland!

Pieter Co-Speaker at ISMS in Amsterdam-Wageningen 1965

Husband Pieter at the ISMS Congress in Amsterdam - Wageningen/The Netherlands
I.S.M.S. for: The International Society for Mushroom Science.
Authors: P.J. Bels, G.J.A. Van Soest and P.J.C. Vedder
The Congress was in 1965 but the procedures got published in 1967
Pieter at the Symposium in Wageningen (part of the ISMS) and to his left is Jan van Asseldonk and to his right is G.J.A. Van Soest who also was the co-speaker with Pieter.
Here is husband Pieter seen with his pipe, and to his right is one of his teachers, A. Oversteyns.
In 1963 Pieter did start the Practical Training Center for Mushroom Growing and he was the teacher and principal, together with some other teachers.
The entire group of international participants of the ISMS congress in front of the Laboratory of Entomology, Phytopathology and Virology in Wageningen, where the Scientific Symposium was held on June 28 and 29.
Center, almost at the top stood husband Pieter, one of his teachers A. Oversteyns and also long time friend J. Kuhn from Switzerland, a very successful mushroom grower.
Jörg Kuhn was a speaker at the ISMS in Paris 1956, published in 1957
Jörg Kuhn also was a speaker in Copenhagen, 1959
Again at the ISMS in Amsterdam, 1965 published in 1967 Jörg Kuhn was co-speaker.
In our book: modern mushroom growing 2020 harvesting we did mention JÖRG KUHN in Some Mushroom Growers Wisdom
Again we mentioned him on page 219 in the chapter COMPOST PREPARATION under Phase II in tunnels;
Some people are just somewhat ahead and are trying out certain ideas a little too early; the rest of the industry is just nog ready for it. Already in the early 1960s, I had seen aerated composting in a kind of bunker in Northern France (ANDRÉ SARAZIN). At the same time, growers like H.F. VON MINNIGERODE in Germany and KUHN in Switzerland, were experimenting with aeration under some pressure of the compost piles. STOLLER in the United States published the outline of doing Phase II in bulk in a kind of tunnel already in 1964.
It was too early; as mentioned before, the industry wasn't ready for it at that time. It was the Italian trio, GIORDANI, DERKS and FRANCESCUTTI who, around 1971, made the tunnel work. Later on, the Dutch and French did quite a bit of fine tuning.

Stay tuned for more about Switzerland, due to this very special long time friendship!
That's also the reason, Pieter learned skiing...
