Mount Säntis in the Appenzell Alps at 2540 meter or 8300 feet

Mount Säntis seen with its highest TV transmitter in Europe.
Remember, Pieter's photos are from around 1963. This transmitter dates back from 1958 and was over five times higher than the Empire State Building in New York, where all of their City TV station antennas were located...
At present there is a 123.55 meter high transmission tower, which got commissioned in November 1997.
The original tower, stemming from 1955 had to be renovated several times due to rough weather conditions before finally being replaced.
So let's go from the Appenzell region, up onto the Säntis summit...
White Church tower on the left.
Those year round green meadows...
Lovely Church buildings can be seen from afar.
Love to see villages like that with their pastoral scene with the soft green hills.
Yes, we will be going up by cable cart!
On July 1st 1935, the aerial tramway started. In 1960 the original cabins got replaced by larger ones.
Between 1968 and 1976 the entire aerial tramway installation got replaced.
In 2000 they commissioned again new cabins.
Looking back at the start of the cable cart, just right from the center in lower part of this photo.
Arriving at Mount Säntis
At 2540 meter or 8300 feet you're above the clouds!
The son-in-law from Jörg Kuhn captured Pieter with his cameras... once arrived at the summit.
Studying the view (IF clear weather permits...) of six countries; Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy.
Pieter is standing in the center to the right.
To the left is Leny Kuhn, Jörg Kuhn's wife and the son-in-law took this photo from the summit area.
You can very well see the weather station and transmitters from that time.
Pieter took this photo from where he stood in the above picture almost completely above the clouds.
From the summit now with some mountain peaks visible
Walking around on the summit, a different view where you can see a mountain lake
No clouds obstruct the view here; it really is breathtaking!
Sure, clouds move and try to obstruct
This gives a better view of the different peaks
A very clear view with the mountain lake
Don't you find this breathtaking?
One wonders about those massive rocks' formation...
A different view with the mountain lake again
Pieter managed to capture two birds in their flight...
Showing those enormous massive stone masses
Yet animals manage to climb and live there...
The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex), also known as the Steinbock, bouquetin, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps.
Males carry large, curved horns.
The snow topped peaks make it look rather cold...
Would not dare to hike in such a region... way too adventurous and risky!
Better riding the cable cart and view from the summit.
For a great view of how things look today, this YouTube 2:32 video is perfect: Beautiful Switzerland Säntis

Hope you enjoyed this segment and stay tuned for more...

Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland where Pieter stayed when Skiing

Church of St. Laurentius in Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland near Davos around ten o'clock in the morning.
This is the little town, where Pieter did stay while skiing...
Remember, Pieter was an avid photographer, so he also tried this one in black & white...
What do you like best?
Church originally dates from 1290 but got rebuild several times.
Walking around the Church; but be careful in the snow!
These slides got scanned by me in December of 2013 and one has to keep in mind that they went THREE TIMES in a container across the Atlantic Ocean. Not so good for their gelatin coating as it gets affected by moisture.
But I'm very pleased with what I ended up with, all the way from 1963...
Mainly homes are build in wood.
Just a cozy little town with spectacular views.
After a fire in 1735 all wooden homes in the city center had to be rebuild...
This is the former City Hall that is now being used as an Inn
'Gasthaus zum Rathaus' is written in 'Old German' which we still had to study in Highschool, is not easy to read!
Gasthaus Madrisa is another typical Swiss Inn.
Madrisa is a mountain section.
This was the 2nd home from the family Kuhn, where Pieter stayed when going to Switzerland for advising them in mushroom growing and having some time for skiing or sight seeing.
You notice how much wood is being stacked under the balcony to the side and behind buildings?
The saying was: 'A true Swiss has wood at his doorstep'
It also created of course a tremendous fire hazard...
Saas Village Square... To the right is the Post Office in this photo but it got closed in 2010 I read.
A closeup of the house on the left in the above photo. A typical Saas Prättigauer home.
Wish I could read what all is written at the very top.
Some locals would know!
Geraniums make it look so romantic...
This was the 'Postbureau Saas'

Stay tuned for more...
