As promised in my previous post: {Less Office Space in Return for Our DEEPER Reach In Closet...}, today I like to show you the finished DEEPER Reach In Bedroom Closet. Finally got the photos done with good enough light.
That's our Reach In Closet as seen from the corner of this bedroom...
You can see from the wall depth that this one was not deep at all, the way it got initially build.
That's the reason we did open up the wall and went inside the office, happily sacrificing 16" or 41 cm of office space.
The wood inlay horse is a gift from our Consulting period for Pond's India Ltd.
You can see the sun is shining, even in late afternoon...
Even with the indoor shutters partially closed, still some glare on those bi-fold closet doors.
The wool rug on the oak chest is also a gift from Pond's India Ltd. in appreciation of our Consulting work.
We treasure those things. Below this post you find a link to a previous post I did about it.
All done in wool embroidered chain stitch!
The white Teddy Bear has been hand stitched by Pieter's Mother when she was already in her early 90s. She made incredible handwork all her life. For many a trousseau she embroidered table cloths and napkins!
The tiny Teddy bear I found in the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines' business class after someone left it in a seat...
I was quick to pick it up to add it to this Mama bear; giving them the same matching pink ribbon bow and voilà!
The other side where you see two of my cross stitch embroidery works, done on velvet.
The light weight summer down duvets and duvet covers and pillow cases are from the Yves Delorme Outlet. If you sign in for newsletters you get notified when they have special sales like on the French Bastille Day in July.
View from behind the bed now and you see the twin silk chain stitch embroidered wall hangings that each of us got as a gift from Pond's India Ltd. for our Consulting work.
It was 16:38 o'clock when I took these photos...
I had to wait this long for not having the painters with their ladders in front of the window!
Womby the wombat from Australia is sitting on the oak chest. He came home with us after our Consulting work in Australia for Campbell's Soup.
By the way, the oak chest used to be a planter box but my brother Harry crafted a solid lid for it and brought it over on their flight to the USA in 1986. Talking about pre-9/11 times. Everything would fly back then! No problem, you just checked it in. Now you are so limited...
In the corner you see two oak Barrister book cases where I keep my stationery and books for classes etc.
Japan is represented here as well. A gift from some Japanese visitors as we had one as our house guest.
The paint color for walls and ceiling is Benjamin Moore Early Sunset.
We have that upstairs for our bedrooms and bathrooms.
What is that dangling down from the ceiling you ask...
That's one of our many Energy Star Ceiling Fans from WAYFAIR.
We always try for 'Going Green'!
You can find a link below my post...
The Madonna cross stitch embroidery is done by Pieter's Mother when she was in her early 90s!
On the children's stool is Boomer, a gift from a Dutch business man who was a good friend of us and my youngest brother Jan also used to work for him.
So many people have stayed in these beds as a guest over those 30 years...
I could write a book about it!
Voilà our DEEPER Reach In Bedroom Closet!
Husband Pieter did install me those white Shelf & Rod shelving.
We had them already since 1990 but of course now we changed height and certain lengths.
Our ceilings are high enough for having two layers PLUS a top shelf.
Home Depot has all you need; at least that's our source for the USA...
For reaching that top shelf, I use this little step.
You can see the additional (not quite matching) solid oak planks from Bruce.
To the side, extra long items can be hung now and to the back my belts are all hanging.
Since we have our Rose Suite now downstairs (added after living in this house for 14 years) guests seldom need to use this room, only if there are e.g. children with their Parents.
My purses are on the shelves in their dust bags. Room for everything.
Box with recipes to sort through one day...
Hats on the top shelf and extra peluw pillows or as they are called here: bolsters.
Scarves for winter...
Seasonal things like woolen stoles, capes, ear muffs etc. are all on top. Even Pieter's heart that he got when he had his open heart surgery in September of 2010.
Considering that, we both are blessed that he is able to do all this again!
Nice light from the ceiling and one more long light just above the bi-fold doors against the wall.
Stay tuned for our 'Office with Less Space,' which I will show soon...
So what you say?
Lots of people seem to be interested...

since i'm not much for clothes and the like, the closet is nice, but i loved those wall hangings! :)
ReplyDeleteDearest Theresa,
DeleteGuess you use more the shelves for folding your clothes away. I only fold my sweaters and t-shirts and the rest is mostly hanging.
We treasure those wall hangings! Did you have a chance to see the previous blog about them with more details?
Thanks for your visit; as usual!
Hi Mariette,
ReplyDeleteIt is great to have increased room in closets. I love to be organized. Your closets look great. I just reorganized ours and cleaned real good. I also add shoe organizers. It is nice to have nothing on the floor. Lovely room for guests. Cute little bears too. Have a nice weekend.
Love, Celestina Marie
Dearest Celestina,
DeleteOh, that is also my aim for keeping floors free (my entire kitchen is free of anything except the table and chairs) but that would have raised the reaching level way too much for the top part. This is okay, I got the shoes out today for cleaning that part today. You don't do that every week!
The big bear is very special since my dear Mother-in-law made it and I certainly want to hold on to it.
Enjoy this special weekend; thinking about your Dad and his friends who did so much for keeping the Peace.
Hugs,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteWow, how gorgeous this room is♡♡♡ Ornaments from various sources (or places and gifts; sorry for my poor English, haha) I especially impressed by the gifts from your husband's mother☆☆☆ Her hand-works for you two are so wonderful and considering her age when she did them. Well, you must know the meaning of the Chinese character you hang on the side of the window; your guests will have "Happiness" staying there.
Organized closet, isn't it♬♬♬ I found one difference from ours. As we don't wear shoes in the house, we have shoes case inside of the front door. So no shoes in the closet p;) Happy for your new space for tidiness :)))
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
Dearest Miyako,
DeleteThere are more Japanese items in this room but I will show that later one day... You are so right about the shoes in Japan and in Indonesia for that matter. Even more Asian countries we can add to that list.
When I was staying with my host family, the Zen Monk and his wife, they too had their shoes near the entrance where I also added mine.
You are a keen observer! Thanks for reading the Chinese character for me.
Lots of love from Georgia/USA,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeletethis bedroom is so lovely, and I know, that all your geusts feel like home and so comfortable there! You can see the Love what is in your house :O))
Your closet is WOW.....so well organized, great to have a place like this!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Love and hugs to you
Claudia
Dearest Claudia,
DeleteThanks and yes being an immigrant for 30 years does make you automatically a good host to family and friends that stayed with us for several weeks. We're fortunate for having now the Rose Suite for guests!
Happy weekend too and I'm forwarding you some sunshine.
Hugs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, great room and great work I love the shutters in the windows. Your wardrove is perfect.
ReplyDeleteHugs
Marina
Dearest Marina,
DeleteThanks and yes, those shutters are super. We had them custom made of solid oak (roble) by someone in Virginia, US in 1990 when we built the house. We had them in our previous home as well and my brother Harry made us some for the guest room. We painted the solid oak white. They help us save quite some money on air-conditioning; either heating or cooling.
Oh, can't tell you how much I love this reach-in closet where I can organize my wardrobe so easily and having great over sight.
Hugs and happy weekend in Jerez.
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
ReplyDeleteೋღღೋ
Herzliche Rostrosengrüße aus der Blogpause :o), Traude
Liebe Traude,
Lieber Gruss,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, great job! organization is everything. I really like your windows, reminds me of my childhood, that the house had such windows, you could open out, and gave a sense of freedom, always kept ventilated rooms! Greetings my dear, Mariette! Cariños, Rose M
ReplyDeleteDearest RoseMarie,
DeleteThank you for your visit. Our windows don't open since we have central air-conditioning in our entire house. But for being able to close those indoor shutters is a great feature for keeping the cold (3 months) or the heat out.
We have no curtains either, just these shutters. Less dust and a better view and like you say; a sense of freedom.
Cariñosamente,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Complimenti!Baci,Rosetta
ReplyDeleteCara Rosetta,
DeleteDavvero è una camera carina! Anch noi dormiamo lì con tanto piacere...
Grazie per i complimenti, speciale per Pieter.
Baci,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,

I'am very happy with you he was be back to strong man and still now.
Hugs and love to you always!
Michiko
Dearest Michiko,
DeleteIt only shows, that you too after your terrible accident will heal over time. Patience is the recipe.
Thanks for your visit dear friend and for your kind words. Yes, my dear Mother-in-law was as hard a worker as is my Pieter. She even used to cook for weddings, on the side... She did it all and till the very end!
Hugs and love with sunshine sending your way,
Mariette
I loved seeing all the details Mariette! Just so pretty. Love the windows in this room...and the closet is now perfection. And you know how I love lot's of closet space!! xo
ReplyDeleteDearest Susan,
DeleteThanks for loving this room too. Oh, those windows are very special with the solid oak indoor shutters that we had made in 1990 in Virginia. That person quit making them but we sure are fortunate for having them! The Charleston pattern we chose for matching the closets bi-fold doors and the other doors in the rooms. Only for the bathrooms and bedrooms we have this type of doors. The rest are French doors.
I'm over the moon with my super closet space. Organizing is a snap and the oversight makes you find or put up things in no time.
Hugs,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteI love how you two were so clever to add to this closet space. Sheer genius! So much usable space. The greatest blessing is that Pieter was able to do the shelves for you. What a joy.
Love to you,
Ginger
Dearest Ginger,
DeleteThanks for your visit. Yes it is a big blessing that Pieter can do most things himself. He had the contractor do the closet and the floor but the rest he handled. That turns always out to perfection and it serves the efficiency of cleaning and keeping things tidy.
Hugs to you dear neighbor, also to Bob!
Mariette
Liefs,
Mariette
It certainly sounds like you've been busy over there. Sure is nice to have a bigger closet. They don't even add closets here ... unless one is building their own home and adds them. We only have wardrobes and cupboards for storage. You have many lovely memories and treasures from your travels and work. I can hardly ever remember where I got something, from whom, where or why. :) Have a great weekend. Tammy
DeleteDearest Tammy,
DeleteOh, we know about that problem too as in Italy we had NONE in the entire apartment. Tough to keep rooms looking tidy and organized without them.
Yes, we got great treasures from our jobs as consultants and they mean a lot to us.
Happy new week to you.
Hugs,
Mariette
I really love that little sweater shelf below the hat shelf. I never would have thought of that, but that seems so useful....the bedroom is quiet charming, Mariette. <3
ReplyDeleteDearest Stacy,
DeleteAll these different shelves are so useful and you only have to think hard before you buy and install them. What you need and where you want to use it for.
Hugs to you,
Mariette
Mariette,
ReplyDeleteThe closet looks really roomy and is a great size. I love all your beautiful clothes. The room has so many wonderful treasures of memories. I love the shelves above the beds.
xo,
Dee
Dearest Dee,
DeleteSure this closet is very roomy and very practical with the two layers of hanging rods above each other. Well, I love my clothes too; great Outlet treasures that I hang on to as my size never has changed. The room speaks stories to us about different continents and countries where we worked together as Consultants. The furniture is all French oak and it's typically Old Dutch style. One downside is that I cannot get fitted sheets or any mattresses for those European beds here in the USA. But we're all set for decades to come.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
In Liebe
Elisabeth
Liebe Elisabeth,
DeleteGott sei Dank!
Lieber Gruss,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteTerima Kasih atas Doanya. Wow the room become so cozy.
Your Husband Pieter really did a great Job.
Banyak Kenangan yang tidak akan pernah terlupakan
Semoga weekend menyenangkan buat kalian semua
salam hangat
Dearest Ayu,
DeleteThank you very much for your visit.
Mariette
Dearest Mariette , so lovely and bright this room ! I liked the handmade ! Now you have a lot of space to your closet !
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend !
Olympia
Dearest Olympia,
DeleteThanks and yes, it is a bright room with lots of daylight. Those handmade treasures are all keepsakes. The closet is a great improvement for keeping things neat and accessible.
Nice Sunday to you as well!
Mariette
Hi Mariette, I enjoyed seeing many pretty furnitures and decorations. And each comes with stories and memories! Your husband Pieter's mom is amazing to hand make such pretty teddy bear and embroidery of Madonna is so beautiful. And you are very creative to get baby bear in matching ribbon :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it would be fun if you wrote the book about your guests who stayed there. Or maybe you can put a guest book that your guests can write about their stay :-)
Your deeper closet looks great. I love the two layers of shelves over the hanger, this makes easier to store items and take them out when necessary. Gave me some idea for my closet :-)
Dearest Tamago,
DeleteThanks for your visit and sweet comment! Oh, we indeed could fill a book about the diverse group of guests we have had over the years. In one week we had guests from Australia and South Africa... We at times looked more like a hotel and restaurant + tour guide than something else.
Good that you picked up some ideas for your own closet. We always learn from each other; that's what it all is about!
Hugs to you,
Mariette
Dear Mariette, your bedroom looks beautiful! And the closet so usefull!!I like the furnitures and the decoration you have done!Have a wonderful week!Hugs!
ReplyDeleteDimi..
Dearest Dimi,
DeleteThanks for your visit and I'm glad that you like it. Yes, it is very practical this way and I'm very happy with it.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liefs,
Mariette
