Pieter Took Incredible Aerial Photos of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome

In 1972, while en route to Jakarta, Indonesia with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, they first landed in Rome, Italy.
The captain called his passengers to the attention of this view...
While descending, the weather was perfect and allowing Pieter to make two incredible aerial photos from the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Seen to the left with the Tiber River flowing to the right...
As the plane turned, now St. Peter's Basilica is more to the right.
St. Peter's Basilica as seen from Google Maps

Sometimes one can get lucky when flying over a certain area!

  3. Wow, that was a fantastic opportunity and photo capture!

I'm not a good flyer at all (I usually bawl uncontrollably until the attendant comes around and I can order scotch--lol), but I *have* been lucky to get a few good snaps flying to/from Halifax and home. Not as exciting as the Basilica, though! :-D

    1. Dearest Kim,
Oh good grief, our job would not have been a good one for you... Both of us never panicked and we did fly as a commute to work; not on vacation. Doing so, we covered some 1,500,000 miles in the sky!

But indeed, that was one of the few lucky days without clouds obstructing the view and everything else in place.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  4. Hello Mariette and Pieter, Those are incredible shots taken from an airplane window. They look completely frameable, and give context to those historic buildings and area.

    1. Dearest Jim,
Yes, that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of no clouds obstructing and also being at the right side of the plane when the captain asked for attention... Had to share this!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Those are incredible photos indeed! View itself is fascinating, too. Very different from what I have seen from airplane flying over the U.S.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Mariette!

    1. Dearest Tamago,
Thank you and yes, to me they certainly look incredible! Wish I'd seen that view...
Each country looks so different and it all depends on the weather and time of the day when landing.

  6. Dear Mariette - Pieter must have been thrilled to capture those photos of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Many years ago we flew to Naples and it became necessary for our plane to keep on flying around (stacking) before it could land. We circled around Mount Vesuvius for half and hour and found it really fascinating to have such a wonderful birds eye view inside the volcano.

    1. Dearest Rosemary,
Yes, Pieter sure was thrilled being able to capture the moment.
Yes, sometimes the bonus of a certain delay can be quite fascinating.
In one of my scheduled posts it is about a similar experience that Pieter lived through...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  10. One of the good points to take an airplane is to get amazing views from the window. I like to look down mountains and rivers. You were really lucky.

Yes, husband Pieter also could capture here the River Tiber very well.
It is quite amazing from above.
On June 2nd you will get to see a majestic Mountain view, taken by Pieter.
