About Me

Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html

Pieter Created Board for my Crafts Sale in Fayetteville, Georgia

Not being allowed by Campbell Soup at that time to work within the USA in the mushroom business, I did create a lot of handwork.
Also trying to deplete my Mom's vast stack of yarn, by buying it from her and bringing it home after each visit to Europe.
Aside from crocheting and knitting myself, I also gave classes at my home.
Once, I even forced myself to crochet with my left hand in order to teach a left-handed lady.
I practiced myself, presuming that I'd had an accident and no longer could use the other hand... Felt mighty proud for pulling it off.
When Pieter came back from giving a seminar at the 28th Mushroom Industry Short Course at Pennsylvania State University on June 10-12, 1985, he brought home some black and white boards for me.
He built me this display rack with those boards, and set it up at the Courthouse in Fayetteville, Georgia.
Yes, I'd crocheted doilies, curtains and framed window decorations.
Also I had crocheted net darning lacework into metal rings for hanging in the window.
Using up lots of Mom's stash of yarns.
Oh sure, this was very profitable!
Also knitted sweaters and lace edging on towels.
Sitting there on Saturday, June 15, after driving one-way two hours and setting up everything, I sold for the astronomical amount of US $ 47.00
But: KEEP SMILING...

  1. Hello Mariette, As expected, we see an amazing display of needlework from you. The most important thing when selling is to find the right venue; apparently this was not it. You have so many hand-made items that I wonder if people thought that you didn't make it all yourself--you readers certainly know the truth of that matter!

    1. Dearest Jim,
Well, this was set up at the square of the beautiful Courthouse of Fayetteville, Georgia. We always wonder what kind of public is going there and for what intention. Those that don't know one stitch apart from another, never will fully appreciate the tedious hours that go into creating nice things by hand.
If I had to depend on it for living, it would have been awful...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. You're very talented, that's a beautiful display. Presumably you made more than your gas cost at the time! 😁

    1. Dearest Kim,
Being talented does not make you sell things... There was a fee to be paid for having your stand, and of course creating that stand + the gas for a 2-hour one-way drive.
      It is tough!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  3. Buenas manos tienes para las labores artesanales. Yo tuve también un tiempo que hice labores de ganchillo para ponerlas en casa.

Gracias y luego también tu mismo debes tener buenas manos para producir piezas de ganchillo fino para el hogar.

  4. Dearest Mariette,
Ah the joys of craft sales.
One year at a favorite, fairly high end show, I made enough to cover all my fees and expenses for a two week workshop at Haystack plus more; the next year I barely covered my booth fees. And so it goes...
Toes crossed you are enjoying autumn.....*s*

    1. Dearest Suzi,
You no doubt know about this too! You were lucky for being at a high end show; that at least guarantees you some revenue.
We're having rain so we will see how the day will go!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. I'm surprised you didn't sell more Mariette, your crocheted doillies were so pretty, market sales can be so up and down, on another day you could have sold out ✨

    1. Dearest Grace,
You should not measure such a sale with a big city like Perth, in mind. In rural Georgia sales have never been good...

  7. It was very kind and thoughtful of you to learn to crochet and knit left handed to help someone else. So kind. You are indeed very talented, Mariette.

    God bless.

Guess if we really want to do something or help someone else, we CAN do it!
Felt so happy for having been able to teach her, now I no longer can do the left-handed version myself...
      Hugs,

  8. Your crocheted crafts are beautiful, Mariette! The black board shows off the detail very nicely!
You must be very proud to crochet using your left hand. I imagine it’s difficult. But the left-handed lady must have been very grateful :-)
Have a great day, Mariette xo

    1. Dearest Tamago,
Thank you, I did it with all my heart and indeed, the left-handed lady cried when she got taught that way. Placing myself behind her and my arms over her so she could see exactly the motions and follow me. It made me feel happy too but since then, I have dropped it myself... not crocheting but only that way.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

      Mariette

  11. You are so multi talented. Not easy to use the opposite hand...I have had a lot of practice since my right arm was out of service after my shoulder replacement!

Thank you and that is indeed very hard to use the opposite hard and each little motion we have to concentrate and think hard. You no doubt have been forced to do this; no choice.
