Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. Pieter Made Brick and Wooden Pole Edging

After building the patio and cover Pieter also made a brick edging alongside the driveway and to the front door.
Around the flower beds he used wooden poles that got first impregnated.
Pieter has hand sawn them all on his sawbuck!
Brick edging around front of house and alongside driveway...
All along the driveway is a brick edging as well, and to the left you see the wooden pole edging also.
Here you clearly see the round poles that edge the flower beds.
Showing the impregnated wooden poles from above...
Wooden poles and the brick edging alongside driveway...
All photos are from Sunday, June 23, 1985 and the fan in the veranda got hung the day before.
Our favorite reading place... The British Mushroom Journal is on the table.
Those blue cushions and pillows, I've sewn myself and that Smyrna rug I've also done myself; knotted with a latch hook...
Both of us have always been rather productive.

    1. Dearest Claudia,
At the time that looked really nice and after the hard work, it kept the soil from washing out.
Sure, in comparison to Europe, this was a big garden but our present garden is far bigger...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. Hello Mariette and Pieter, Apparently there is no end to the impressive projects accomplished by the both of you. And everything is so near and tidy--not exactly my own forte. I do have some questions about the pole flower border--do the exposed ends get uneven and have to be adjusted each year? How deep are the poles set into the ground?

    1. Dearest Jim,
Thank you and yes, Pieter is rather thorough and precise in whatever he does.
No, those exposed ends did not get uneven and never needed to be adjusted.
They are about as deep into the ground as they are above.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Dearest Marie-Anne,
Yes, we both loved our home and garden at that time very much and did the utmost for creating some beauty.
The wicker set with the blue cushions and also the large Smyrna rug stayed back with my Parents when we moved from Italy back to Georgia again.
We have no curtains, no carpet other than cotton mats that can be laundered and only for bathrooms and bedroom. In 2007 I had to use the pump spray for severe asthma so we changed into solid oak floors and tiles only. Never had that problem again!
      Hugs,
      Mariette
