We Almost Grew BANANAS

Well, living in the tropics and also having friends from India, Thailand and Vietnam, makes one appreciate exotic things.
So from our Thai friend we got a young banana tree...
Both of us were thrilled to see it BLOOM!
Quite a sight on July 25 of 1993!
We just had completed adding the balcony with storage room below.
What do you think about our banana tree?
Of course we never got to harvest the mature fruits.
They grew but then before maturity we had frost and a banana tree can absolutely NOT handle any frost.
Yep, less than a month after the little greenhouse got completed, we had SNOW!
That banana tree was way too big for transplanting into the greenhouse...
So it wilted away and in the spring it started again from the roots up.
Our Home in the Snow... only in the morning for a couple of hours as it melts away FAST.

  1. Banana trees can be so difficult to grow. We tried small ones indoors - just ornamental. Grew about a few inches high. Beautiful foliage.

    God bless always.

    1. Dearest Victor,
Yes, they are tricky even with our subtropical climate but such a sudden frost will kill them off right away.
They sure looked good and had perfect healthy leaves. Used them in some recipes for wrapping meat.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Si ya tuviéramos la valla de vinilo, habría protegido la planta del viento helado. Seguro que se veía bien.

  3. A special tree. Too bad the snow and cold froze it.

    1. Dearest Anne,
It sure is special and here the temperature always drops too suddenly for one or two nights of frost and they cannot handle that...

Oh, central Florida is of course far better for growing tropical fruits.
We saw many in Indonesia but we never could grow any here in central Georgia.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Bananas don't do well here, Mariette, as you most certainly found out. Ever tried growing one in your greenhouse?
    Blessings!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
Yes, we found that out, we only had these blossoms ONCE and then frost and snow.
The banana tree was way too big for our greenhouse, its height would lift the roof off...
For doing so, you really need a tall and high enough conservatory.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  8. The banana tree lent that tropical look. But the space is also beautiful with snow.

It sure gave our place an exotic and tropical look.
Different faces weather–wise, over the years...
