Living with kitties is never boring!
They exposed us to wildlife we both never knew we had on our property!
Our 10 month old Dido brought this into our garage.
At first we thought it was a little crab...
Dido did run and was not letting us see it.
One of its shears was off and it also held its tail under its belly...
Dido's catch looked more like a Procambarus talpoides or Mole Crayfish.
Our almost one year old (on March 30) Sacha (Bandido's sister) brought one inside our bedroom at 10:00 PM.
This one was complete and now we clearly could see that this was a Crayfish or Cambaridae.
Crayfish are the food for bullfrogs, snapping turtles, raccoons.
Guess our kitties found them interesting living toys...
Quite interesting those 5 naughty kitty siblings!
How often I've had to 'rescue' some critters—and yes, I used to make that trip in the night across the lawn towards the creek.
Have you ever seen a Crayfish?

Kittens being kittens! Very cute. 🐈⬛ 🐈⬛
ReplyDeleteDearest Debby,
DeleteOh, they can be quite naughty... and love to play!
Hugs,
Mariette
I haven’t seen a crayfish. Have a lovely day. Regine
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
Dearest Regine,
DeleteThese are rather small versions and they dig themselves into the banks of water bodies.
Hugs,
Mariette
Great video. We have bought crabbing permits every year. Crabs have also arrived.
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteIn your region, you are talking about the real and bigger size crabs. This was just a tiny river crayfish, not worthwhile for eating it. I've set it free again!
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh GOSH they did something even Robin never did!!!
ReplyDeleteDearest Carole,
DeleteWell, depending on the property I guess, I've never seen any before but they dig themselves into burrows it seems. They are not that tall.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liefs,
Mariette

Dearest Magda,
DeleteThey are not scary at all!

Hi, Mariette and Pieter!
ReplyDeleteI saw your comment about Aristides de Sousa Mendes and althought I knew about him and his courageous deeds to save so many people, there were many things I read in this article that I did NOT know. He was a true hero and put his life in second place. It's a shame that he died in poverty and that only after so many years, he was recognized for what he did.
But as he said: "I would rather stand with God against man, than with man against God."
This year, a promenade named after Aristides de Sousa Mendes was inaugurated in Paris (the man with glasses is the current Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas): https://eurojewcong.org/news/communities-news/france/promenade-in-honour-of-aristides-de-sousa-mendes-inaugurated-in-paris/
I searched for other sites that talk about him and the reconstruction of his house and I found these, that I thought where very interesting (I don't know if you already saw them, being the search-savvy you are!):

Thank you for being so sweet and an inspiration, Mariette!
Lots of hugs to you and Pieter!
:)
Dearest Paula & Nuno,
DeleteIt is good for ones soul to stumble about such information of a real noble man who truly did stand with God!
No, I had not read the other info that you passed on here.
Hugs,
Pieter & Mariette
Yes, it is and may we also stand with God in every aspect of our lives!
DeleteHugs from us to you and Pieter!
:)
AMEN!
DeleteHi, Mariette and Pieter!
ReplyDeleteOur Tareco would LOVE to be able to catch a crayfish! He's always chasing mosquitoes around the house and if he could, I bet he would chase the birds (he only does that with his eyes, through the window's glasses!)
That crayfish is HUGE! I know they use it a lot in Louisiana recipes. Do you use it also in Georgian recipes?
:)
Dearest Paula,
DeleteOh you bet, Tareco would have loved being part of this!
All kitties have that instinct and no matter how—we humans can never change them.
The crayfish was not huge in reality, bigger than the one Bandido caught earlier but I've never heard anyone prepare them here. I just returned it to the creek area and let it be.
Both of us ate the BEST crayfish ever, in South Africa—did add the related link below this post now... We also had great crayfish in Italy!
Hugs,
Mariette
I'm sure he would! Cats are amazing. So caring and at the same time, so independent.
DeleteAbout your trip to South Africa... First of all, as usual I LOVE your outfit! Pieter and you are very elegant and those red sandals... WOW!
Second, when I saw the picture of the Harbour Tavern's card and it said that they were specialists in original Portuguese dishes, my mouth watered, thinking of seafood rice, lobster salad, shrimps sautéed in garlic, fish and seafood cataplana... so many seafood delicious dishes that we have here in Portugal, and that I love.
Nuno, unfortunatelly is alergic to seafood, so I'm alone in my love for it! :P
The view of Table Mountain towering in the distance is amazing. Such a beautiful view to look at! And the one seen from Bloubergstrand, with Lions Head is stunning, too.
I tried to see if the Harbour Tavern still existed, but had no luck. But I did found some memorabilia from there: https://www.rubylane.com/item/192576-3105/Harbour-Tavern-Harbour-Cafe-Restaurant-Ware
:)
Dearest Paula,
DeleteWe have such fond memories of South Africa from that time. Pieter lectured at their mushroom conference and then we got invited at the several farms.
People always have showed us around and obviously this restaurant was one of the BEST. no it is no longer around, when writing that post I found out about that. So glad I still had that card, saved in our scrapbook all those years!
Those red sandals I just recently did wear with this very outfit: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2015/10/contemplating-cutting-my-hair.html
Had to bring them to our cobbler in Atlanta as one of its heels had come off. But after November 4, they will be ready again for picking up.
What a find that cup & saucer from Harbour Tavern — Harbour Cafe.
Don't recall any of their tableware—only the memory of the BEST crayfish ever!
Guess, Pieter and I have acquired a true international taste and both of us love spicy foods.
Hugs from both of us to both of you—too bad Nuno is allergic to seafood...
Mariette, I just saw your post and I too have silver hair and had contenplated cutting it and I DID! :P
DeleteA few years ago (I think maybe 10 years ago?), I decided to stop dying my hair. My hair was originaly dark brown and because I started having white hairs popping up in my midle 20's, I started dying it and when I got to my 30's, it was starting to become very dry.
One day, I was sooooo tired of seing my hair becoming more and more damaged and I asked Nuno if he would mind me stopping dying my hair, because his opinion was the only one I cared about.
He said my health was first, so I stopped dying it and it was the BEST thing I did. I had to cut it very short, like your friend, because the dye wasn't going away fast enough and I had half of my hair gray and the bottom half dark... So, I cut it short and thank God it grew faster and healthier!
These days, my hair length is mid back and although I wish I could have my brown hair back, I love it's gray colour and will never dye it again. Your hair is beautiful, too and one can see it's healthy, even after the medication you took.
About the sandals, I remember my mother had ones similar in the 80's, but in white with a golden rim on the top and I loved them, but I think she gave them to someone later and unfortunatelly I lost track of them...
Your saldals are gorgeous and cutting the heels was a struck of genius, because that way they are much more confortable and don't hurt your back.
I was talking to Nuno a few hours ago, before we had lunch and I was telling him about how long yours and Pieter's clothes and shoes last and that we had to keep watching out for quality and learn from those who know best!
Regarding Nuno's seafood alergie, it's always hard for him to be around those that are eating seafood, because the smell of it gives him nausea, so I avoid eating it at home and only eat it when we are at a well ventilated restaurant or preferably outside!
:)
Dearest Paula,
DeleteWell, for as long as I live, I've never ever dyed my hair... But I do remember my late husband's Mom dying hers—she was very dark and turning gray before age 30. So, like you, that might be tempting to reach for that 'cover–up'.
Nuno was right in saying your health comes first!
My hair once reached my hips, while living and working in Indonesia, I braided it for hygiene reason at work. Still got that long and thick braid framed here at home: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2011/07/did-i-loose-my-strength-like-in-samson.html
Also Princess Diana's favorite Mason Pearson brush has been my rescue. Got the large one and the small one for inside my toilet bag for traveling.
It makes quite a difference!
Yes, those sandals got cut down and I love it a lot more than the original height. I already have long legs so don't need to lengthen that part of me...😉
Pieter used to have gorgeous hair, his was more curled even. But we don't stay forever young and that is good. Like good wine or cheese—we ripen with age!
Too bad you can't enjoy seafood at home... We both eat it most of all.
Hugs,
Mariette
You look beautiful with long or shorter hair! And how I wish I had never dyed my hair, too... I saw your post and your hair was so long! And so pretty, with those soft curls! :)
DeleteThat braid was amazing and I bet is still a beautiful reminder of an era of your well lived life.
Those brushes, even if expensive, seem to be wonderful for the hair and are a great investment if they help with hair loss issues. It's better to spend money in them, than on the pharmacy.
I use an Elite hair brush with boar bristles, wich is perfect for wavy and curly hair.
Lots of hugs!
:)
Dearest Paula,
DeleteYes, investing in a good boar bristle brush is far better than supporting Big Pharma!
So glad I conserved my braid, just as I still have my baby lock that my Dad snipped off when I was only 3 months.
Hugs,
Mariette
It exists in Portugal but I have never seen it in nature. Kittens like to bring home gifts and give them to their owners.

Coisas de Feltro
Dearest Christina,
DeleteOh, kitties sure like to bring gifts to their human parents and they have introduced both of us to a lot of our critters that live on the property.
Yesterday I've rescued a beautiful lizard that I've never seen before... so many different varieties live here.
Hugs,
Mariette
