True story and we actually ATE it.
September 27 of 1995, back in Limburg, The Netherlands, Mom did spoil my Pieter by having rice pudding and at clickable 0:42 (view it on YouTube!) Mom proudly shows one of Dad's cauliflowers and...
A huge BUTT!
That happens when you have a son–in–law who is involved in mushroom growing, they even show up on your own land.
That is a huge cauliflower! That was a delightful video, Mariette. Your mom and dad's accents were interesting to hear. I could do without those roosters though. One of the reasons we had to move from our last home - they were right next door, and LOUD! I love rice pudding. Looks like Pieter is enjoying it.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
Dearest Sheri,
DeleteThat cauliflower was not huge but top quality, nice firm and not loose.
But did you see that HUGE mushroom?
Roosters are a lovely sound to hear and to wake up to. That would be a sorry reason for moving...
Mom's rice pudding was with whipped cream and sure Pieter enjoyed that—all of my family did.
Hugs,
Mariette
The Rooster's crow out in the country doesn't bother me, but these were right next door and they didn't crow just in the mornings but various times during the day. It was annoying. And hard on the ears. Roosters are often not allowed in suburban neighborhoods because of their crowing. It's disrespectful to have Roosters that close to your neighbor, in my opinion. I opened my kitchen door, and they were right there.
DeleteSheri, you were living in the city? Your comments are rather vague in that regard.
DeleteIn Indonesia we had roosters on the compound, they were in a large cage. In Asian countries it is quite normal to live with them.
During the day when everyone is at work, it would not bother many... But I guess it is just a personal attitude.
Were they free roaming since they were right at your kitchen door?
Hugs,
Mariette
When I opened my kitchen door, they were right there behind the neighbor's fence roaming freely. They were LOUD even with the door closed. In many areas, there are ordinances where Roosters are not allowed in neighborhoods because of the noise.
DeleteSheri, you lived NOT in the city limits due to the neighbors having their property fenced in and roosters roaming freely. WHY such aggression?! Also indicates that you lived in a very poorly insulated home as double glass and insulated walls keep outside noises away aside from saving energy. Don't you think you exaggerate—and what about people living near a railroad or highway—that is a lot more noisy.
DeleteYou certainly make a lot of unnecessary noise here...
Hugs,
Mariette
My son had a serious and painful ear condition at the time, and I was concerned about how the noise would affect him. It's a gentle reminder not to judge people when you don't know the facts. Peace be with you, Mariette.
DeleteSheri, you did not write in the second person to start off... A very strange reaction and nothing to do with the subject of my post!
DeleteHugs,
Mariette
Thanks for sharing such a priceless memory here today, Mariette. I absolutely loved it, and did get a chuckle out of the BUTT mushroom that Darla posted. What a great sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Dearest Martha Jane,
DeleteIt is indeed a fun and humorous story and we actually ATE that butt mushroom—except Dad, he did not trust it. Even the chicken loved it...
Hugs,
Mariette
I'm not sure I would have trusted the butt mushroom either. Oh my gosh, that was funny! And I thought the cauliflower was quite large, looked fabulous.
ReplyDeleteYour videos are treasures, Mariette. We don't have any of our own family, though there are hundreds of 35mm slides in one of Dad's closets!
Dearest Kim,
DeleteAs long as you know what you are dealing with, this is a delicious and safe one to eat!
Dad grew cauliflowers to perfection.
Your Dad's slides are a treasure and so easy to digitalize. That is the very first what I archived, all our slides and then photos, scrap books and videos. Quite a mega task but so worth it.
Hugs,
Mariette
Interesting, but not something I would try
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteYou would eat cauliflower I presume but as for the mushroom, I understand because you are no expert in that field.
Hugs,
Mariette
That was a good memory and boy that is some funny butt mushroom!
ReplyDeleteDearest Terry,
DeleteYes, a very fond memory and a delicious 'edible' butt!
Hugs,
Mariette
Funny video- that was a big butt. :) The cauliflower did look perfect and so did the pudding. XO
ReplyDeleteDearest Ellen,
DeleteIt sure was—the biggest I've ever seen!
Dad knew how to commercially grow cauliflower, they seldom made it to the auction as women almost fought about getting one...
Yeah, rice pudding with whipped cream sure looks perfect. A family favorite and also on Pieter's side. Mom saved it for Pieter...
Hugs,
Mariette
What a big butt that is of a mushroom. I love it. Beautiful cauliflower and I do like cauliflower and mushrooms. I love hearing the crowing and seeing the chickens. A down home feeling it gives.
ReplyDeleteDearest Betsy,
DeleteYes, it sure was an exceptional big one but Dad's land was fertile and he was a professional market gardener. Those were the crops off the fields, aside from the big greenhouses for Boston lettuce, tomatoes, gherkins and English cucumbers.
You are so right about hearing and seeing the chickens and rooster—a happy sight and noise!
Hugs,
Mariette
What wonderful memories! That was an enormous "butt" mushroom!
ReplyDeleteDearest Lorrie,
DeleteIt sure was an enormous one but also delicious!
Fond memories indeed.
Hugs,
Mariette
THAT was fun....I love cauliflower...hubby not so much.
ReplyDeleteThe video is a true treasure
Hugs Cecilia
Dearest Cecilia,
DeleteThank you and yes, it is a treasure to have of all three that are no longer with us...

Dearest Laura and Mackerull,
DeleteIt sure was a butt of a mushroom and the rooster was calling all of his girls to come eat from it! They loved it but Dad did not dare to eat any of it...
Hugs,
Mariette
Dear Mariette,
ReplyDeleteThe butt mushroom looks absolutely marvelous and is the biggest mushroom I've ever seen. I love it when I see small white mushrooms looking. like a butt, and sometimes like a heart depending on how big the sides get :-). And cauliflower is one of my favorite vegetables. That one is a beauty as well. You don't see many that size in the grocery stores or even on farms in the US lately. What is your favorite meal to make with mushrooms and one as big as that butt was? :-)
xo
Brenda and the Ts
Dearest Brenda and the Ts,
DeleteIt was also my biggest EVER!
Usually we did not eat mushrooms that much, since we talked about them, wrote about them and that would do. But sautéed with some butter they are delicious with or without meat.
Hugs,
Mariette
Thanks Mariette, Mushrooms sautéed with butter is my favorite way to eat them. I would have been in mushroom Heaven with that one! ❤️
DeleteDearest Brenda and the T's,
DeleteWe certainly loved eating them that way!
Hugs,
Mariette
What a precious memory. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. ~hugs~ That chicken coop is awesome; their scratching around made me smile. And your shout-out was very kind.
ReplyDeleteDearest Darla,
DeleteIt sure is a precious memory now and I had to link it to your post with the 'mini' butt!
Oh, the chicken coop was a happy sight and hear that rooster call all the hens to come, taste mushroom. They loved pecking at it.
Mom had several exotic hens and a rooster, she loved them and they were fun pets!
Hugs,
Mariette
Abrazos,
Mariette
That mushroom really mushroomed! It must have loved all of the special nutrients and care it was given. It can still buttress the reputation of Agaricus bisporus by displaying it's glorious shape, as well. Happy 90th Birthday to the Cauliflower King. He certainly has rapport with Mother Earth!
ReplyDeleteDearest Wendy,
DeleteYes, it got the best of the best nutrients and water so it went all the way.
It is a giant Agaricus relative indeed.
My Dad reached 98.5 and he enjoyed growing veggies as a hobby till the end!
Hugs,
Mariette
That's such a fun and special video, Mariette. Great memories!
ReplyDeleteHow amazing that the cauliflower and the mushroom grew so big. Especially the mushroom -- I've never seen one so big!
Dearest Kevin,
DeleteThank you and as a memory this is perfect!
Dad was very specialized in growing top quality, firm cauliflowers.
That mushroom is often found in the summer when it is humid and it indeed grows huge.
Hugs,
Mariette
Lovely memory!
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, indeed!
Hugs,
Mariette
What a hilarious find!
ReplyDeleteNature’s sense of humor never ceases to amaze—especially with that giant butt-shaped bovist! 😄 Your dad’s cauliflower looks incredible; no wonder he was the Cauliflower King!
Hugs and blessings, dearest Mariette
Dearest Veronica,
DeleteIndeed, Nature's good humor and edible as well.
Yes, Dad grew the BEST cauliflowers.
Hugs,
Mariette
OH I loved that video!!! We really love cauliflower in our household ... cannot believe the size of that one. Thank you so much for the sweet comment you left on my Carl post. Cock-a-doodle-doo.
ReplyDeleteDearest Helen,
DeleteYes, our entire family also loves cauliflower and Dad provided the BEST.
It was just a comment from the heart—as always and because I know the pain that other ignorant people can cause.
Hugs,
Mariette
Ha ha, thanks for the laugh! And that is a huge cauliflower. Wish they sold them that big in the stores!
ReplyDeleteDearest Peter,
DeleteYou're welcome and I would love to find such cauliflower here in the stores.
Hugs,
Mariette
Beste Mariette,
Liefs,
Mariette
