{Obese Agave Moved Outside of Greenhouse}

Inside our rather small Greenhouse we keep our tropical pot plants during winter time.
But one of them had grown during winter that much, we could no longer get this 'Obese' Agave Outside of the Greenhouse...
But something had to give... risking even to break off a leaf!
Here it is; OUTSIDE on the Greenhouse Patio... not wounded!
Of course we can never bring it back inside again!
Have you been dealing with pot plants that did grow into OBESE ones?
It is still a beauty but we now only can cover it up for winter time and hope for the best!

  4. Hello Mariette!
    What a gorgeous plant!
It reminds me of thoses agaves we had in and around our property in South Africa!
It is faitly resistant, and I guess if you cover it in winter against frost, it should not suffer.
Quite a job to get bring it outdoors! LOL!
Keep well and enjoy the coming week!

Oh, those are looking great but we made a mistake by building a single door for our greenhouse. Who thinks about this size plants? It will be fine when covered up, so far it has proven to be very strong.

  6. Lieve Mariette,

      Liefs,
      Mariette

  7. It makes me feel very lucky that we can leave our Agarve out all year. I don't know if there are different types because mine the leaves don't face down. They are more slightly upright.
It is so good your plants can survive your harsh winters. I don't know what you will do next year because they do grow much larger than that. You might have to take it inside.

    1. Dearest Kay,
Sure there are different varieties of agave and we too have the one with pointed leaves that go upright, they also have very sharp ends!
We do not have a harsh winter here in the south but most of our plants are subtropical and therefore cannot handle temperatures below 0°C. It can freeze here and if it does, the day- and night temperature is too drastic from around 20°C to e.g. -10°C. Normal winters happen slowly so plants get adjusted but we don't have that in the south.
We will just cover it up when we have frost; that's it! It never will pass through any door... way too big.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  8. That'a a beautiful plant, Mariette!!!!!!!!!!! I believe ( and I hope) it wiill not suffer during winter if you cover it well. Do you still have other plants in the greenhouse at this time of the year?

    1. Dearest Marie-Anne,
It will be fine when overed in winter time IF it freezes.
No in summer we never keep plants inside the greenhouse as it will be around 50°C and that is way too hot for any plant. We keep the greenhouse only for winter storage of tropical potting plants.
      Hugs to you,
      Mariette

The fact that this variety is soft, did make it possible for moving it outdoors without damage. We will cover it when frost comes and hope for the best.

We are glad it got out, soft leaves that made it flexible to move past the entrance... But now it has to stay on that patio; too big to move and when covered for eventual frost it will be fine.
Hugs and lovely week to you as well.

  16. We were just at the local botanical gardens and the agave plant had grown so tall they had to remove one of the ceiling panels so it could grow out the roof! It was getting reading to bloom, and they said that happened only every seventy years ? I think, and then it would die. It wasn't "obese" like yours but very tall and thin (at least the long top part of it).

    1. Dearest Deborah,
You were able to observe a very rare sight of a blooming agave. However, there are numerous different varieties of agave. Ours is smooth leaved and spineless. Yes, they die when having bloomed but they do produce 'pups' during their life for continuation.
We will see what ours is up to.

    1. Beste Marianne,

  18. Good Evening Mariette, Oh my word, your Agave plant was very happy living in your greenhouse over the winter period.... it is huge. I am so glad you managed to remove it from the greenhouse in one piece.
When I lived in Cyprus we saw a lot of Agave plants and we also grew them in the garden, but as the temperature was more temperate in the winter the Agave plants survived.
I do hope yours survives as it is a beautiful specimen.
    Best Wishes to you.

    1. Dearest Daphne,
Yes we were lucky for getting it outside the greenhouse in early summer... and in one piece! This species is smooth leaved and soft, guess it was flexible enough for passing through the door opening one last time. We can have winters here which are very mild but it also can suddenly freeze. You know we are at the lattitude of Tunesia so that is way south too. We just hope the best and with some cover when needed, it might live on.
      Hugs to you,
      Mariette
