{Our Citrus Aurantifolia - Key Lime}

Most readers from the USA will no doubt know the delicious Key Lime Pie. The botanical name is Key Lime 'Citrus aurantifolia' and they are available at Logee's Greenhouse, just click again on hyperlink.
Now that being said, let's look at the blossoms of this famous Citrus Aurantifolia "Key Lime" which is on the patio in front of our greenhouse. They're certainly worth a Garden Tour to see and  for their fragrance to be smelled.
Pieter took these excellent photos on June 2nd. And by the way; yes both of us went to Key West, the southern most island of the USA. That was last year in early February when I just was out of the hospital and could walk and move again after having been paralyzed because of a rare auto immune disease. The last photos are from there. We did stay at the Hyatt Key West Resort and Spa where I'd booked a year in advance, a free stay for 5 nights from our Hyatt points. So glad we made it, thanks to my timely recovery!
Heavenly fragrant blossoms, like all citrus trees.
Very long thorns too!
Citrus trees do have very long thorns on their branches.
Top left you can see already a Key Lime being near maturity. To the right is our greenhouse, where they reside during winter time.
Growing well...
Photo from our balcony at the HYATT CENTRIC KEY WEST RESORT & SPA.
That's me standing in front of the Guesthouse where our German 'son' with his family stayed in 2008.
I have gained already 3 kg or 6.6 lbs in this photo; up from 46.8 kg.
There is much to be grateful for as I've come a long way!

  2. I love key limes! I enjoy making pies with them. They are quite tiny but full of flavor. I have been known to not add much sugar in my pies. I love the tartness of the limes.

    P.S. You take beautiful pictures.

  4. Hello Mariette,
I had never heard about "KEY" limes before my sun was his holidays in Florida. They returned with a love of Key Lime Pie and told me so often, how yummy that is, that I looked for a nice recipe. I tried several recipes but all were different and didn't hat the structure he remembered. I guess, it was a very special one! But all my homemade Key Lime Pies suffers on the fact, we do not get real KEY limes here, only normal limes. Although I loved every one. Your photos of the Plants are as always outstanding. I can smell the scent in my mind.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  5. Oh, I love all kinds of citrus. I wonder how it tastes. And wonderful pictures, haha long thorn thet got, despite the marvelous white flower.
So, surprised to know you were ill last year, I'm glad you are doing fine now!!!

Wow, yes you are wearing PINK dress which looks nice for that Resort. Quite becoming on you. Kindred spirits, yea♡♡♡ And you're absolutely right when you said that the mental situation affects what color of dress you want to wear. Well,I'm glad to know that you don't have much trouble finding clothes for your size in America. I rarely can find one for my size, that's one reason I cann't throw old ones.
Haha, happy to find that we both have something in common♪♪♪

    Hugs,xoxo Orchid.

  6. Hello Mariette, you citrus tree brought me lovely memories about my childhood. My grandfather planted a citrus at the front of our house, and my mother used to make perfume with the flowers, I still remember the smell, also she used to make tea out of the leaves, I also remember the taste and the sweet aroma. It is a shame I can not have one now, I live in Canada and this won't be possible. Your pictures are very nice.

  7. Hoi Mariette,

Prachtige foto's van de bloesems. Heel apart.

  9. Key lime pie is my favorite! What a gorgeous tree it is with such pretty blooms. My mom lived in Key West for a while and liked it a lot. Several summers ago I bought a key lime juice that was to be mixed with cool whip and served on graham crackers. Made for a quick and yummy dessert when you didn't have time for the actual pie. Last summer when my cousin in NC heard that I loved Key Lime Pie, she actually made not one, but two for me, first time ever and they were delicious. I even had some for breakfast before we left that next day. :) Have a great week. Tammy

  10. And yes, you have come a long way. I can't imagine 46.8 kilos -- I am 61 and everyone thinks I am thin. There was a 90 year old woman on The Doctors tonite who did yoga and she could out "plank" any of the doctors on the show. Her strength was amazing. And her tip for a healthy life was to BREATHE! :) Best wishes, Tammy

  11. Hello again my dear friend ! Thanks for visiting my blog and for following me. I'm also following you.
And I'm from north of Mexico, from a big city named Monterrey which is 3 hours from Texas.
I could see you know a little bit of Spanish too, that is very nice = )
And yes, it is a shame I can not enjoy a citrus tree anymore, but at least I keep those nice memories deep inside my heart.
    Best wishes,
    Laura = )

  12. Those photos are marvelous, especially the Key Lime blossoms. Have you made a Key Lime pie from your limes? I have to confess that I have never ever had a home made authentic Key Lime pie. I have a lemon bush that I just recently transplanted from the planter to the side of the yard where it can grow in the ground and I did get pretty scratched up. I had one blossom on it, so if I'm lucky I may get one lemon this year. I do love the smell of the lemon blossoms - as you say, all citrus fruit blossoms are so wonderfully fragrant. I loved Key West when I went, especially the marvelous sunset with the 254 degree view.
I'm sorry to hear about your health struggles, but am glad you have improved. I was never paralyzed, but I was stuck in a wheel chair for about a year before I finally got my bilateral hip replacement four years ago...a new lease on life.
So much to be grateful for...You have the best botanical information on our blog and thank you for visiting me as well. Bis bald,
    Tschuess,

  13. Dear Mariette,

What beautiful photographs of the key lime blossom. Any citrus is wonderful and so healthy, with Vitamin C. The resort looks fabulous where you stayed.
So sorry to hear that you were paralyzed and did not know about this.
So glad to hear that you have put on weight and your health has improved.
Thanks for visiting me and I enjoyed reading your lovely note, about your letter writing.

    Happy new week
    Hugs
    Carolyn
